Banjo Kazooie Spiritual successor revealed on this month's EDGE

To go along with my 'Not Banjo-Kazooie' I did a 'Not-Gruntilda'.

All of this is starting to really sound like a dream come true.

Imagine if, in response to Rare potentially making a new Banjo, Sony or Nintendo decide to fund this game.

That would just be amazing.

I'm sure this isn't even close but I did a little sketch of what 'Not Banjo' and 'Not Kazooie' might look like to throw into the pile.

I might do a more refined drawing later. They'll probably reveal the real things by then though.
You should make a game with those characters.

I really like your "Not Banjo-Kazooie", but your "Not Gruntilda" is...well, too much in my opinion. Not a bad design, mind you it looks awesome, but it doesn't look like it'd fit with your "Not Banjo-Kazooie" designs.
It's also too...detailed. Should look a bit more cartoony.
Also dem spiky nipples, yo.

As much as i'd want Nintendo (or Sony) to fund this and have it get proper assets to make the game as good looking as possible, i can't help but be curious about what an "indie" 3D platformer would ACTUALLY look like with this kind of talent?

I mean there really aren't many of that kind or at ALL that i know of that are worth a damn right?

Guys! Playtonic has made a dedicated official account in Spanish for their game. I find so utterly awesome they pay attention to other languages countries in this way, something not many developers do ( not even Spanish ones), They are also so nice, always reply when you tell something there. I feel absolutely amazed by their involvement with the fanbase.

Go take a look at their account and follow them :) https://twitter.com/PlaytonicEs

The roundup of questions and answers(nothing too important other than humour)
Q:How many Ukuleles do you have lying around the office?
A:We only have Ukeleles that tell the truth
Q:Who do you serve POOP?
A:Tip of the day: Never serve POOP, your diners won't appreciate it
Q:Where are the answers? Will it take POOP an entire weekend to process a single question?
A:Yes. (err… you've just used up 12 processing hours with that question)
Q:On a scale from 1 to Grant Kirkhope, how awesome will Project Ukulele be?
A:Around David Wise/Steve Burke (11) :)
Q:Daddy or chips?
A:Only the silicon kind for me.
Q:When will then be now?
A:When there is here
Q:How are you funding this game?
A:paid via a secret government experiment to soak up people's time using Twitter.

And they finish saying this: Ooh. POOP has bluescreened and is now dumping ... (err.. something). So that ends the answers for this week!

Nintendo please. Buy this studio and you have a new old Rareware.

Most of these guys were around in MS Rare and were being dismissed as being untalented so dont go around saying that. In fact, i remember people targeting Steve Burke being representative of a mass exodus at Rare because they didn't use a veteran to compose Kameo. Kameo OST end up being one of Rare's finest.

Best thing for these guys is to stay independent with one of the major guys publishing their game. Like Platinum

Nintendo didn't sell Rare. Rare sold the majority stake to Microsoft, so Nintendo had no choice but to sell up their stake aswell.

That is not entirely right, is it? As far as I recall, the Stamper Brothers wanted out and Nintendo had the first buy right, but saw the offer as too high and not worth it with the emerging problems internally at Rare.

Then the Stamper Bros went shopping around and settled for MS (with Activision being in on the bidding too).

Correct me if I'm wrong though, it's been a while since I read on the subject.

Nintendo would just have Miyamoto upend the table and get them changing the game, they're better off how they are now.

If (and this is of course a BIG if) Nintendo did work with these guys exclusively, then Miyamoto probably wouldn't be involved in their games at all unless they were working on one of his properties. Playtonic would most likely be working with SPD (more specifically Kensuke Tenabe who works with western devs) who are known to give devs pretty much free reign (going by testimonials from Platinum Games and Valhalla).

A group of former Rare developers are to present their new game at this year's EGX Rezzed. Playtonic Games will take to the stage on Saturday at 4pm to present a session entitled 'A rare reunion: Rebirth of the 3d platformer'.

Gavin Price, Creative Director, said:

"It was the fans of our past work who inspired the creation of Playtonic, so we're delighted to be able to showcase our vision to them in person at EGX Rezzed - as well as a few cheeky details of our game!"

The staff at Playtonic have an outstanding track record from their time at Rare and this is sure to be a fascinating session.

If you can't make the session on the day then don't worry, every developer session will be streamed live on the EGX Twitch channel and will be available to watch later on YouTube.

Edit: EGX Rezzed starts on March 12th.

There are two likely possibilities:
(1) Miyamoto was throwing tables back when Banjo was developed and the result was one of the best games ever.
(2) Miyamoto did not care for Rare's tables too much and therefore would probably not be too bothered by Playtonics tables either.

I don't see any real risk here.

I think that's more or less correct, yeah. IIRC, Nintendo was all "we're not interested in acquiring Rare but if you find a willing owner we'll buy you out and sell the entire company to them".

I really hope this game is a success, and that Playtonic grow significantly, hopefully drawing any remaining veterans still at Rare.

Microsoft couldn't have handled Rare any worse, so it would be poetic justice if all the talent still there jumped ship, leaving Microsoft with a studio with no real worth whatsoever.

What are you even saying here? That the new devs that have joined Rare are worthless? Smh.

Apart from, y'know, all the IPs they could get other developers to work on...

Not to mention restaffing RARE with new developers who could bring something new to the table.

No, not at all. It's never good to see people lose their jobs unless they personally deserve it. And there's no reason any new talent can't also go to Playtonic (or elsewhere). I'm just saying that Microsoft completely destroyed Rare, and it's nice to imagine those responsible actually having to acknowledge their own failure and suffer the consequences.

As for Rare's IPs, Viva Pinata is the only one they have that's particularly valuable or relevant. I don't see why we should be hopeful/optimistic for any of their other IPs when they've done next to nothing with them for 13 years. Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts and Killer Instinct were the only real attempts at using their classic IPs, yet they didn't make an actual Banjo platformer (I enjoyed Nuts & Bolts, but it was a complete waste of the franchise, and would have been no more or less enjoyable if it were a new IP), and Killer Instinct was too little, too late.

At this point, even if Rare announced new Banjo/Blast Corps/Jet Force Gemini/Perfect Dark games, I'd be cautiously intrigued at best, as most of the people responsible for making the old installments great have left.

And let's say that Rare go kaput, and all of their franchises have no potential future. It's hard to get choked up over that when they've pretty much been dead for over a decade already.

I got bored of holding out hope for the revival of their old franchises a long time ago. At this point, I'm more eager to see Playtonic thrive, and establish new IPs. Good staff have a far bigger role than established IPs in making good games.

Neo-Rare hasen't made a good game in years. I seriously doubt the Xbox One will be that sudden "spark". The spark is this new group. Thankfully one that won't be tethered to just one console.

I'm sorry. I really don't get where this "MICROSOFT KILLED RARE" talk comes from. Rare has made very good games (and some not so good ones admittedly) since Microsoft has bought them. Well received games too. I get that nostalgia is a hell of a feeling but guys, don't crap all over what current rare has made just because its not what your nostalgia wants it to be.

We're just dying to see this list of so-called good games made by neo-rare.

I've played everything aside from their Kinect titles and none of their newer games come anywhere close to the Nintendo 64 days. Since the original Xbox they've been really uninspiring.

Sure, it's hard to top the impact titles like Banjo, Conker, Goldeneye and Perfect Dark had, but it really feels like they haven't even been trying.
