The colors of this photo will appear different to everyone. I think?

Most people seem to go from seeing white\gold to Blue\Black.

Has anyone started out seeing Blue\Black and is now seeing White\gold?

I want to go back to White\gold but can't!

I'm losing my fucking mind here. I pull the picture up on my phone, white and gold. Pulled the picture up on my computer, white and gold. Looked back at my phone, blue and black. Back to my computer, blue and black.

I don't even...

No, I'm not, at all. There are several white reference points around that dress that clearly show that it is not white and further that there is not a blue tint on anything in the photo. It's just blue.

Taking a few samples of the photo and showing the palette of individual pixels of the dress doesn't alter the perception of people. You can't really use a computer to explain color perception. Traditional colorblindness or those experiments with certain cultures blending blue/green prove that color isn't a fixed thing, it's just something we all agree on.

I'm not "wrong" for seeing white, I just see more white than blue.

This is assuming both are in the same lighting conditions.. which they're clearly not. Everything besides the dress has pretty much a halo around it it's so bright. The dress looks like it's in the shade, with perhaps something blue reflecting on it, not something in direct bright light like the other objects. If it's in the shade it's pretty much impossible for it to be dark blue and black.

Those two parts are in different lighting conditions

Not really (as you can see that the black shares the same "gold" tint as the dress). And even if it didn't, I really have no idea what kind of lighting setup would be required to produce a photo like that if both cloths were white. The more reasonable assumption would be that the dress is blue.

1) I know the color in the picture is dark brownish, that's not gold.
2) I know the dress is black, but awkward illumination is making the black have a bit of a brownish dark gold glow.

also, that appears to be two articles of clothing, some sort of jacket wrapped around the dress itself. That might factor in if the other article is lighter and the brain perceives the whole combination to be one article and diffuses the lighter color across the dress.

To the people who see white instead of blue. You know when you scroll through a thread and see one of you own posts ?. what color is it to you, blue or white ?

The flight plan I just filed with the agency list me, my men, Dr. Pavel here. But only one of you!
I am laughing so heartily at all the white and gold peasants.

Blue/black master race.

I actually see blue and brownish/gold

Anyone who sees blue/black saw an optical illusion, photoshop samples show that the ACTUAL PICTURE we are seeing, is in fact light blue and gold/brown-ish, and this cannot be argued. The actual color of the dress doesn't matter.

If I took a picture of the sky, then inverted the colors so the sky appears orange, then the sky is orange. The real sky may be blue, but the picture. Is. Orange. If you're still seeing a blue sky, your eyes are messed up.

Now if I see the bottom half of the picture it is Black and Blue. If I see the entire picture it changes to Lilac and Brown/Gold.

Cropped in Photoshop the supposed white part for sure looks blue, but it sure as heck isn't super dark blue.

The gold part doesn't look black though. Dark Gold? Sure!

Or, their eyes are deriving enough context from the rest of the picture to determine that they're looking at an overexposed image and adjust accordingly.

—Blue and Black: In conclusion, your retina’s cones are more high functioning, and this results in your eyes doing subtractive mixing.

—White and Gold: our eyes don’t work well in dim light so our retinas rods see white, and this makes them less light sensitive, causing additive mixing, (that of green and red), to make gold.

No, our brains and eyes are just functioning well enough to see through the illusion.

For some reason I can see white and gold and when I scroll down and back up Its blue and black for a while then turns into white and gold again

This whole thread is bullshit. On my Nexus 7, the dress is white/gold. On my iPad and work computer, it's blue and dark gold/brown.

It's the displays, damn it!

It's not though, at least based on my own experiences.

I opened the thread, glanced at the photo, saw dress as white + gold, read about the effect and scrolled down to make sure the OP wasn't trolling.

Turned around and asked my boyfriend what color the dress was

"uh... black and blue... why are you asking?"

I freaked the fuck out.

Blue.... I don't get it, we're talking about the interpreted color here, not the actual color that you see in the picture. Don't think anyone is arguing that the lace parts aren't dark brown/goldish and the other parts aren't lightblue, which in the shade translates to white and gold and in bright light to blue with shiny white and black with brown/goldish shininess in really bright situation. Or are you actually seeing it as a really dark blue and actually black in the picture?

I woke up in the middle of the night and it was blue and black. Now I've been up its white and gold.

out of curiosity, do those who see white not notice the blue tint? When your brain understands that it's not shadow it should go away

Don't feel bad, it's really unnerving to look away and look back and it's a different color. Some sort of sorcery at play here.

Aaaaaannnnnnd now I can see it :{

I had to crop out the top half of the dress and look only at the bottom. It's the weird light that's reflecting off the top of the dress and the jacket that's screwing with everyone's brain. I guess some people are naturally able to block that out.

I originally saw it blue / black (still do now) ... but randomly saw it white / gold when I scrolled up last night lol

It could be a discrepancy between the brightness settings of your displays. Try doing what the update explanation dude did. Turn the brightness all the way down, then bring it up and check the picture. If at all the way down you see white/gold, your eyes aren't as good at picking up the blue in low/dim light situations. If at max brightness you see blue/black/gold, your eyes can see the blue, but it needs to be very bright; if you still see white, the overexposed picture makes it hard for your eyes to notice the blue at all and is messing with you in an optical illusion type of manner.

In the end both white & gold and blue & black are wrong because even though there's no white there's no black in the picture either.

The actual dress is black and blue but the picture shows light blue and dark gold colors. If you're seeing actual black in the picture your eyes are just as wonky as those who see white & gold.

These are pretty close to what I'm seeing. My brain is interpreting the blue as more of a gray though, like the dress is in a shadow.

I'm not physically seeing black, but my brain knows from the other cues in the photo that it is black and when I look at it I think that is a black and blue dress.

Yeah, its a bluish color, but quite light.

Almost like a...light blue.

Also, as a person who sees blue, my eyes are super light sensitive. Like, I wear sunglasses indoors in a lot if situations depending on how a room/building is lit and the color of the walls. I guess that makes sense according to earlier explanations? (more light sensitive = see blue)

This is how I see it. I see the light blue parts as white, but in a shadow. I know the color itself is individually gray_blue, but my brain corrects it based on how I understand shadows to work.

Doesn't change the gold/black divide though...

Is anyone viewing this on mobile? I'm using my phone and all I see is White/gold. But apparently people see different colors. I wear glasses if that means anything.

It was white gold yesterday and black blue today, on another computer.

Either this is some "wannabe gif" jpg file that changes color every once in a while, or there is some illusion going on or color differ depending on the monitor.
