the "5 years in the making" made me re-think the scale of this game. the cute look probably lead me to think it was smaller than it actually could be. we'll see with the first gameplay footage. in any case, that development leadtime and the fact that it is on Nintendo platform make me hope for a Western release.

Ugh. Another game I will have to buy on the 3DS. Assuming it comes to the West of course. This system is causing me to go broke. So many good games.

Yup, the truth.3ds actually is killing all my other console here. Spending too much on 3ds and only few games on wii U and almost zero on PS3.

I like Zinogre but I don't think riding a monster who is electrified, grows spikes when angry, and breakdances is such a good idea.

5 years sound like development hell tho.

If it's actually an RPG, maybe I'll enjoy it more than regular Monster Hunter. Trailer tells me absolutely nothing about the stuff I care about, though.

I'm sure it'll be one of those offline MMORPGs (kinda lika Xenoblade, which I didn't like at all).

Of course you wouldn't make it angry!
But un-electrified Zinogre is lame as hell....
decision decision....

Wow, the trailer is amazing and very charming. I didn't really like the felyne design though.

I'd probably like that, but just need to see how the gameplay is. If the combat is more hack n slash'-y while staying true to MH's mechanic, then I'll definitely be buying.

They weren't likely 5 years of full development. Perhaps something like Star Fox: the concept idea was born many years ago but actual development started a couple of years ago.

it seems that Tsujimoto is involved, so probably this is developed (at least partially) by the main MH team, so in the meantime thwy also developed 3Ultimate and 4/G so I'd say that the 5-year-in-development so far could just suggest us that they believe in the project.
I think we'll see once gameplay footage will be shown, probably

I think it's amazing that the Japanese can still come up with kawaii cat designs in general. Surely every avenue of design has been exhausted by now.

I like the word RPG. Outside of that, I am having trouble discerning anything about the game. Is it turn based? Is it pokemon style capture monsters to fight for you? Open world? Action RPG? Breeding of monsters? Dunno.

Interested though.

Ryozo Tsujimoto is the general producer of the Monster Hunter series... that'd be surprising if he wasn't involved with this.

Oh christ made the mistake of looking for more information on this game on other forums. All these edgelords complaining that it's 'kiddy' make me think I fell into a time portal to the Gamecube days.

Well they are clearly aiming for a younger audience with this.

It doesn't look that bad, but what's up with those dislikes on the video?
Not certainly what I would have expected as the "next step" for the franchise but it has potential to be good.

MH already targets a young audience though.

The first MH was rated M. Every one since has been T. The games are notoriously hard too. I'm not sure whats young about that. However, MH4 is on the "young person" platform, 3DS. I'm really curious if Capcom is trying to transform the series into a Pokemon type franchise, or if they are just trying to get people hooked at a younger age. For me, MH5 is going to make or break the franchise. If it's on mobile, I'm done. And i think there is a strong chance it's going to mobile.....

People in 'not liking something clearly not aimed at them' shocker.

I don't understand why people waste their time complaining about games they have no intention of buying. It's as if they expect every developer to solely target all of their products at one narrow group of customers, without realising that the classic, traditional Monster Hunter we love is stronger in the long-term if it does something to introduce new players. All this game is is a stepping stone to help replace the hunters that grow up and stop gaming in Japan after a decade or so, but some people see the cartooney graphics aimed at kids and immediately freak out as if Capcom had suddenly dragged Deviljho and co. out the back and shot them in the car park.

It also has a relatively high barrier of entry as a game. It practically demands familiarity with 3D action games and isn't very forgiving, something that is second nature to those of us who have been playing games for years, but not to pre-teens with a lack of patience and plenty of options for games that offer constant, reassuring progress on their mobile phone.

MH has already become a massive franchise in Japan that appeals to everyone. Much like DQ, Pokemon, and Youkai Watch. Though the demographics probably skew a little older on MH than the other 3 brands it still has a large relatively young audience.

In Japan? MH became big through co-op in schools with young kids in school. In the US sure MH doesn't appeal to younger demographics but it Japan it definitely does.

It's rated C in Japan, which is equivalent to T here.

I know. That doesnt change the fact that MH is big for middle school students in Japan as well as older kids.

.
I agree, but it doesn't appeal to absolutely all of that demographic. I doubt the exact same few million kids are playing Pokemon/YW and MH, there's probably a large crossover but the kids who are playing one but not the other are still the easiest subsection to target for new growth as they already have the console and an interest in computer games/monsters. This way perhaps the 'cute' art will attract kids who aren't already playing MH, not to mention the obvious ease of translating it to animation, merch etc.

It's not like they have much to lose- this won't be slowing down development of MH5, and MH brings in enough cash to make an experiment or two in extending the brand's appeal amongst children, or offering a stepping stone from YW/Pokemon to MH, worthwhile.

First things first: that cat is ugly as sin. =P

Well, it could be a cool game. What I really like in MH is the great combat so maybe this thing will not be my dream game but the MH world is cool and people who never liked the pretty peculiar combat system could enjoy the setting with a different gameplay.

I hope to see Capcom porting this over...

People should stop referencing data that makes me feel uncomfortable because games get ported to platforms I don't like
That Felyne character model looks bad...

If we get this in the west I may try it but I won't hold my breath we never get Monster Hunter Spin offs here.

Monster Hunter already is a pokemon type franchise in size.

I think the 3DS is pretty big with all demographics ages 8-50 in Japan, but its weakest groups are males 13-18 and 19-24. Just because it isn't popular with teenagers and students doesn't mean that it's a "young person" platform, though. The 3DS, and Monster Hunter as well, are absolutely huge among the working 25-40 crowd.

I mean, you have a system that's sold 20 million in a country with a population of 120 million.

well, in this one's case it looks to have a much greater appeal than past spinoffs. Which I guess would be that weird PSP cat game and Frontier? I don't pay much attention to mobile but i know we did get some of that stuff.

This looks like a no-brainer for a western release considering the popularity of games like Bravely Default on 3DS. I mean it's Capcom and unpredictable is their middle name especially regarding this series, but I'm sure we'll get it.

I am of course operating under the assumption that this is some kind of typical dragon quest-like RPG and not something batshit insane.

I'm actually shocked that 3DS never saw a Monster Hunter Diary game. Natsume Atari made those and they made a fair amount of 3DS games, plus you'd think it have been a perfect fit.

Did the two games do badly on PSP? Maybe Capcom didn't want to risk making too many MH games to the point of there being more than 1 a year. Still 2015 is seemingly empty. Curious as that's now a rarity and I guess they really want to take their time with Stories to make it for next year instead.

Yeah, a game like that would make a lot of sense of 3DS given the userbase. IIRC, the second one on PSP was severely overshipped.

You're right. I must have thought C in Japan was M in the states and it's been that way in my head ever since. Anyhoo, it's still not a kiddy franchise if you ask me. I don't want them to go M rated, but I would love to see the franchise get a big graphics and effects upgrade. I've been wishing for mounted hunts for a long time too and think there is epic potential there. I would hate to see Capcom cheap out and go the safe and easy route any further than they already have. MH is a big name and getting bigger. Capcom should feel confident in investing AAA money in it.

I think MH could be doing Destiny or GTA numbers if Capcom gave it a AAA budget and put it on PS4/XBO. It still gets no respect in the west and i think it's because the series is mainly portable.

Hahah MH doing Destiny number by virtue of being on higher hardware... Yeah. That's ignoring the fact that the series's gameplay is really not for everyone. The game being super good looking isn't going to change that.
