UK: Retailers cut PS4 to £290 as console price wars continue

Retailers cut PS4 to £290 as console price wars continue

Sony has seemingly reacted to the recent Xbox One price cut by reducing the PS4’s UK price yet further.

As spotted by GameSpot, a number of retailers are currently offering the machine for under £290. Tesco, Amazon and Argos are all offering vanilla PS4 consoles for £289.99, while GAME throws in a copy of Minecraft for the same price.

Sony itself has even promoted a new price of £299.99, which it says will run until April 28th.

Until recently PS4 had been selling full price for around £330, which is already £20 short of its official £350 RRP.

Last week the price of the Xbox One was cut to £299.99 in what was described as a retail-led promotion.

MCV last week revealed that both machines can readily be found for far below their RRP across UK retail as the pair’s average UK selling price continues to fall.

Keep in mind that the pound is quite strong against the euro right now, the PS4 is easily found at €400 elsewhere in Europe. £299 is around €416.

Yep, this is more or less about consumer perception. Don't want consumers to think that the competition is a cheaper, viable alternative aka "the deal". UK consumers are perhaps more price sensitive than U.S consumers - who knows.

lol nice...

I've never been happier about waiting to buy the latest generation of consoles.

I'll probably hold-out until Black Friday and get a ridiculous deal.

All according to keikaku.

Thats great for the UK.

It's stil expensive in continental europe with no decent bundle as far as the eyes can see. Maybe this christmas season.

I recall some people claiming it was 3 or 4 to 1 in the early days (which it may have been); but it's clearly closer now.

Europe =/= UK.

UK, the last known figure was around 1.5 : 1, and it was that way since launch till around pre-September 2014. This ratio doesn't take into account holiday or post-holiday performances though.

Well yeah, UK is very price sensitive, not very brand loyal.
Yes, and the strong GBP means that even with the new price they make more money for each UK unit sold than the rest of Europe right now. Wonder if it will still be worth it after the election.

That's cool, I've had mine since near launch so I paid full price but I'm not bothered because I've enjoyed my time with it :)
Still a pretty good deal, surprised that GAME have a better deal than the other places.

I don't know about 3 or 4 to 1, but in the xb1 UK price drop people were claiming PS4 was highly outselling it in the UK and it wasn't close when all data says otherwise.

Eh, it's a matter of perspective.

We know the sales difference when the price dropped was around 3:2, in favour of PS4. Now, 3 PS4s sold for every 2 XB1s do sound like very little.

Now, if we round it up to actual volume sales, that means by the time PS4 sold a million, XB1 was around 660k, a difference of 300+ k, which for the UK market, which is a big gap considering the sales window.

Or if you put it to perspective, PS4 was selling 30% more than XB1. That's not a negligible figure.

Again, it was well outselling the XB1 in Europe as a whole. In the UK it's been ahead but consumers there are very price conscious, once the XB1 was reduced in price they've been selling well and it's been close.

I only talked about the UK, wasn't discussing all of Europe as this is a UK news thread.

Oh you're right PS4 is winning not claiming otherwise. Just saying it's closer in the UK than some people make it out to be. PS4 and XB1 are really only fighting in the UK and US. PS4 has already outsold and will always outsell XB1 everywhere else. That's already determined at this point.

Sales in the UK (Xbox One/PS4) are closer than some people thought.

This would imply Sony were more concerned with maintaining a perception of outselling a competitor in a specific territory than how much money they make though, which to date doesn't appear to have been their approach as far as I can tell, in contrast to Microsoft's seeming attitude towards same.

Who claimed 4:1 In the UK? Why so pressedT?

First time I've heard that as well.

The ratio in the USA is closer than the ratio in the UK.

But these two markets are where the Xbox One is strongest. But not strong enough to surpass the PS4.

If Sony instituted this then I'm surprised they felt any reaction was needed tbh.

Xbox One has been steadily catching up in the markets where Xbox 360 was dominant last gen ie. US, Canada, UK, Australia etc. A lot of PS4 global dominance comes from sheer control of Japan and non-UK EU. Otherwise sales are close in NA/UK again. I predict Xbox One will again have a strong holiday as they ramp up the Halo 5 and Black Ops 3 marketing machine.

Australia? Where's the console sales update for Australia sales?

In many parts of europe it is, even worse, but uk was always the only other territory x1 managed to stay competitive.

Who claimed it was that in the UK?

No one ever said that. Maybe in Europe. You seem very troubled by this. Xbox is doing fine in the UK/US you can breathe easy.

Wasn't that Spain ?

I meant more the perception that it was being outsold by 3 or 4 times in general, even though UK =/= Europe.

Perception? Get the fuck outta here, we don't deal in Republic Credits (anecdotal bullshit) in the Outer Rims. Gold peggets ( real stats MCVUK console sales milestones) only.

You are going to have to define steadily catching up because the PS4 has outsold the XBox One in every NPD this year so far.
