Guillermo del Toro confirms he will not be collaborating with Kojima on Silent Hills

We already know from the past that Kojima and Konami has friction and that's due to him being forced to work on MGS while at the same time cancelling his other works (ZOE3).

They unceremoniously fired him and have begun scrubbing away his legacy and placed a gag order on him.

Everyone who was even still in the know, like Donna Burke, all have came out with statements to support Kojima. Not a single one would say "It's not what you think guys! Kojima is at fault!"

didnt know about the gag order... I guess I don't know enough about this story. Dont even know who Donna Burke is lol

In the case of MGS it's something that's still relevant and making them money. Give it a couple of titles down the line and it'll be a done deal.
It feels like they're just sitting on a money pile, though. People love their classic IPs and I'm confident they could make good money reviving them properly. Handing them off to random team across the globe lacking the experience in such games just doesn't work. The strength was in the design, not the brand itself. That's why they lost big on so many attempts at bringing these games back.

They really should just sell their IP and remove themselves from the gaming space. If they want to stick to pachinko, health clubs, and mobile junk they should at least make some cash in selling their unused IP as well.

Do you know what an actor is? Did you even play P.T.?

What a completely ridiculous post. Actors can have range, you know.

Have you two missed the whole "modern gaming" thing? The only point of having him in the game was to put Daryl Dixon on the cover, have him killing things in the trailers to attract the Walking Dead audience and just in general have him out promoting the game.

Range? Come on, be serious now. Millions of actors have range and they wouldn't cost a fraction of what this guy costs to represent in the game.

Well, Lynch left because Showtime weren't going to give a big enough budget to produce the show at the quality he wanted it to be at.

Aww come on man this can't be real. Didn't know that !

The fuck is going on right now. :'(

Because that worked so well with Walking Dead Survival Instinct. They probably made billions!

So, I'm guessing there are some business side guys that wanted to get Kojima out of the way and Konami games in the future are going to be paint by numbers garbage including future Metal Gear games.

Good job.

People like drama and tend to fixate on some imaginary emotional fallout/conspiracy between Konami and Kojima as the reason for all the ongoings at Konami, when the reality in business is usually far simpler and money driven; they don't give a fuck about investing in big budget games any more.

make me think that will Konami shut down MGSV multiplayer server soon since these server cost them a lot of money?

This seems pretty unlikely.

Konami was incredibly happy with the response to P.T. There were internal talks about making P.T. its own thing, separate from Silent Hill.

Whatever happened with this game and Silent Hills probably has little to nothing to do with Konami Ebezeering over P.T. while Kojima is the trodden-upon Tiny Tim. It was probably simply that they no longer had a director for it, Silent Hill isn't exactly a hot property that can just go to any team because that strategy produced major bombs in the past, and their continued path into leaving retail game development.

I keep mentioning it and it keeps being ignored, but Konami had a number of major producer departures in the last few months. The producers behind Love Plus, which was a money-maker for Konami, left really abruptly about a week before this Kojima stuff broke. They're almost certainly restructuring out of games, so any conspiracy theory of what's happening here that is solely about Kojima and Konami is likely way off base.

This changes everything.
Everything you know is a lie.

But it begs the question, why so secretive?
Have they negotiated the sale of their gaming IPs/division to someone else?
Is there going to be a genuine megaton waiting at E3 or TGS?

This is the immediate pressing question now. They can say what they want pre-release but I can't see them supporting it for more than 12 months before pulling the plug

I am Korean.
It's like they are trying so hard to get people to hate them that this can't be real. How can one company be so out of touch with literally everything

When Del Toro appears in an interview with bandages on his head and is really a CG render, then they will appear serious.

It made a heck of a lot more than it would have otherwise. It was also still better than Downpour.

But lets face it, I'm arguing that Konami would use the actor they paid for to fully exploit every commercial opportunity by making the game as mass appeal as possible.

Others are arguing that Konami would resist this urge and instead let Norman fully express himself artistically in a true to its roots game. All this in a series that hasn't had a good entry in a very long time.

And here we are.

Wait what?!?!? This can't be true! That is even worse news :(

Showtime did issue a statement after he announced that to say that they were going to try to do what they can to get him back on board.

UPDATE 27/04/2015: Konami has sent us over a brief Q&A on the likely Silent Hills cancellation.

In it the Japanese company says it will continue to develop the Silent Hill series, but it fails to deny Silent Hills, specifically, has been cancelled.

There's also reference to an image of Norman Reedus which supposedly disappeared from the official Silent Hills website. But as far as we can tell the image of the actor is still up. Perhaps it will be removed later today.

Here's the Q&A, for what it's worth:

Why has the image of Norman Reedus disappeared from the official website?
This is because our contract period with him has expired.
Why is "P.T." no longer available on Playstation Network?
Because the distribution period has expired.
What will happen with regard to "SILENT HILL"?
Konami Digital Entertainment Co., Ltd. will continue to develop the "SILENT HILL" series.
What will happen with regard to "P.T."?
P.T. was purely created to be a playable teaser for "SILENT HILL."
What do you mean by "playable teaser"?
The playable teaser was a trial edition of "SILENT HILLS" intended to give players an idea of the game concept.

Norman Reedus had a contract that expired years before the game was set for release?
Are they even trying?

Perhaps they did a shorter contract for the teaser, with an option to sign him for the full game if there is enough market interest?

Will the P.T. demo remain downloadable from the download list? I added it to my download list just in case when I get a PS4. :)

Anyway, really wonder what must be going a Konami for them to cancel or scale back development on such a highly anticipated title that would likely have ended up being profitable for them if reception was good.

I hope we'll hear about both sides of the story one day. It might be easy to jump on the Konami hate train, but I'd like to hear more about their perspective as well.

I think it's just PR speak for 'we terminated his contract', just like how the vague 'the distribution period has expired' answer also dodges the question.

The attempts to disassociate Kojima's name from MGS were suspicious enough that I think some of the conspiracy thinking was natural.

Inc some western take on Silent Hill that completely and utterly misses the point of the series

Maybe Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes could take a swing at it, chose between 6 annoying stereotypes, the asshole jock, the good final girl, the dumb slutty blond, the stoner, the token black guy and the nerd and venture into the town of Silent Hill!

The fact that Konami isn't salvaging this project tells me that there is a personalistic quality to their decisions.

They clashed with Kojima, and it was personal, and they are mad... and they will put their grudge against his projects above the pursuit of money.

Either that... or Kojima was so integral to the organization of these projects that they can't complete it solo. Or they don't realize just how on point (commercially) a Del Toro + Reedus contribution would be to their series.

Not a massive fan of Silent Hill but it is a shame to see a project not see the light of day. But with the creative directors leaving the company this seemed like something obvious that was going to disappear? I be tthey couldn't come up wit ha deal that didn't include Kojima or the costing demands were too high of Konami to support.

Just part of running a business! Hopefully Konami can find another way to re introduce the series though.

Just saw the Reedus stuff. It sucks but I think everyone saw this coming. Personally I wouldn't have been interested without Kojima anyways. Here's hoping, for when they do decide to bring it back, they get some talented developers back at the helm.

We probably will never know, but I want to know what the fuck went wrong with Kojima and Konami. Seriously.

Honestly, I don't really care at this point. I'll never be buying another Konami product again, even if that means not playing MGSV. This entire debacle has been sickening and knowing the undoubtedly petty, absurd reasoning for it would only make it worse for me.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.

Well there it is, as plain as the smoke and mirrors Konami reps are allowed to talk through at this point. Is cancelled and Konami's console game division is dead/dying.

Now they have to keep this "EVERYTHINGS FINE" shit up for another 5-6 months until MGSV comes out. Madness.

To be honest and I don't want to defend Konami at this point, but until we don't get a clear picture, it could also be a big fuck up on Kojima's side and who knows, maybe we would then agree with Konami's decisions.
