All three PSP Battlefront games are now available on Vita (NA)

All are on sale for super low prices and all three are now directly purchasable and downloadable straight to your Vita.

This does not appear to be the case in UK or EU, unfortunately.

Previously Battlefront II and Elite Squadron were Vita compatible, but only through PS3 transfer. But Renegade is now finally Vita compatible too AND no transferring is required for any of them. You can download them right from the Vita store.

It is worth noting that while Battlefront II was a (great) mobile companion to the PS2 game, Renegade and Elite Squadron were built specifically for the PSP and are excellent, optimized, content-full games.

Renegade seems to be the most popular of the three, but all of them were very successful and popular games that play even better on the Vita with the second stick. All three are playable on your PS TV as well.

They are on sale in the Star Wars Bundle, but they are cheaper to buy individually. You can search by title or click the May the 4th page on the browser store.

These were some of the most high-profile PSP games missing from the Vita store. Fingers crossed for Portable Ops in the future!

Just an FYI: there's a bundle for six PSP Star Wars games on PSN for $40. It's actually cheaper to buy those six games individually.

Which is the best one in terms of replayability? I want to try one of'em.

I believe people would suggest either Renegade or Elite in this case. Read about the different campaign structures and choose the one that appeals to you the most.

The PSP Battlefront games worth playing?

Maybe not Battlefront II, which is decidedly lesser to the PS2 version and lacks the campaign.

But Renegade and Elite were both really good and really popular. They are somewhat forgotten previous system sellers.

Are the online servers still up?

They use Gamespy don't they? Those were shut down last year?

I think the better question is: Which one is similar to the console/PC version Battlefront(s) and has bots/replayability on it's own.

Battlefront II is pure bot/challenge maps, I believe.

Wikipedia said:
The PSP version of Battlefront II does not feature the Rise of the Empire campaign. Instead it features three single-player Challenge modes; Imperial Enforcer, Rogue Assassin, and Rebel Raider. In Imperial Enforcer the player is sent to eliminate indigenous species on several given planets, such as Gungans on Naboo and Ewoks on Endor. Rogue Assassin requires the player to eliminate all Imperial officers on a given sets of planets. Bonus points are awarded for any other kills. Finally, Rebel Raider tasks the player with locating specific objects in a map and returning them to a designated drop point, similar to Capture the flag.

Renegade and Elite are made for the PSP and are optimized in that respect. People really love them. They're some of the highest profile PSP games that have been unavailable until now.

I have played Elite and Battlefront 2, controls were much more fluid in Battlefront 2 than on Elite Squadron when mapped to the right stick. First person mode is only available on first game and it works very nicely on Vita.

I had no idea there were two other Battlefront games for the PSP. I wrote off Star Wars on the PSP/Vita after being horribly disappointed with Battlefront 2's controls/gameplay.

Wait did I just read that Elite had ground to space battles? How did that work? That makes the lack of space battle in EA's battlefront even more embarrassing.

If I only want to play with bots in various maps and don't care about a campaign mode, which is the best game to get?

Perhaps Renegade is for you. Particularly with Instant Action.

Wikipedia said:
With instant action, players are able to take part in battles against computer-controlled opponents. There are four types of missions. Conquest is the Battlefront standard and pits two opposing forces against each other on a space or ground map, with the objective of controlling all of the command posts on the map, or defeating every member of the opposing force. There are also three variants of capture the flag, including a new mode called Hero flag, whereby players are permitted to control famous Star Wars characters during standard flag battles by physically carrying their team's flag.[13] These heroes span the Clone Wars and Civil War periods and include Asajj Ventress, Jango Fett, and Kit Fisto.

A holdover from previous Battlefront games, galactic conquest is played as a type of turn-based board game with segmented turns, similar to Risk. The board is a simplified representation of the Star Wars galaxy, with four quadrants containing several planets each. The player and the AI opponent each start with several planets (including a headquarters planet which has more reinforcements), which generate revenue each turn in the form of galactic credits. Credits are used to purchase reinforcements and hire special commanders, who are leaders like Admiral Ackbar and Tarkin. During each turn, a player is allowed to move reinforcements around their controlled planets and attack opponent-controlled planets.[15] Attacking a planet initiates either a ground or space battle, which can be fought manually or automatically. The player wins by conquering all of their opponent's planets.

Just a heads up to those who will buy Elite/Renegade. They are the only two Battlefront that do NOT have pre-made classes, instead you build your own loadout and can pick from them during a match. It's very weird if you go into it expecting Battlefront 1&2 style classes but Renegade is one of my favorite Battlefront games out there. It has been years since I lasted played it but the ability to customize your character let you try a huge amount of different combos.

Fuck man I saw them today but I wasn't really sure if i should get em

If I do I want the best of the 3.

I would do some reading on Renegade and Elite and pick which one sounds cooler to you. Elite seems to have had the more fun/interesting campaign with movie fan service while Renegade is the favorite for all its pick up and play modes.

Where do you see them individually? I only see the bundle

On the Vita store go to the Featured tab, hit Weekly Deals and scroll down. If you're itching to buy Lego Star Wars III, you can find that via search. Weird situation where one is missing from the sale folder but able to be found through search, while the others are in the sale folder but not viewable through search.

Or, you could just save yourself some time and buy them from the webstore.

Wait did I just read that Elite had ground to space battles? How did that work? That makes the lack of space battle in EA's battlefront even more embarrassing.

It was exactly how you'd imagine. There was a space battle and a land battle happening simultaneously, and with a ship you could fly back and forth between them,

So I have to ask, how did these games play on PSP? Did you have to MH Claw it where D pad moved the character, nub moved the camera, and shoulder/face buttons did all the actions? Or was it a case of face buttons aimed, d pad moved, and nub did special actions?

MH Claw with super duper lock on and auto-aim basically. Fortunately you can assign D-pad to right stick on the vita.

I don't know how that has any bearing on the reboot (which is a completely different game,) but you should give it a try before you laugh off balance in favor of bigger-is-better, because while it works in the PSP game, the difficulty balancing two environments was one of the reasons why FreeRadical's Battlefront III suffered in development and eventually never shipped.

So, in the PSP game, how it worked was that there were two different maps: one with the ground landscape and a short atmosphere, and a second with a set amount of space and a bunch of floating ships to attack/board. When you flew near the borders, you had the choice to trigger the switch. A transitional cutcene played to hide the jump between maps and maybe hide a little loading.

Side-note: Battlefront Elite Squadron is essentially the portable version of Battlefront III that managed to finish up despite the console game's struggles. The gameplay elements are pretty similar if not identical, and there are even cut scenes in the leaked BF3 footage that is exactly the same as story sequences in the finished PSP game.

All three of these games were pretty rough around the edges. There's no way I'm not buying renegade squadron again at only $3.5 dollars though.

BFII uses the analog stick to move, face buttons to aim, and R to shoot. Elite Squadron and Renegade squadron use old school move and aim with one stick controls, with a lock-on/strafe button.

They all have instant action with bots, but BFII is most similar to the console/PC version, as its mostly a direct downport of the console versions. The physics, controls, maps and load-outs are all the same. The two squadron games have custom load-outs and got rid of all aiming in favor of a lock-on button. The combined space/land battles in elite squadron failed to appeal to me. It was basically just start battle>go destroy enemy ship>land and continue normally on ground. Not to mention the space map was rather empty of players. Having them separate definitely makes it more enjoyable.

how is renegade? elite isnt available in europe at all, but i need a good sw game right now.
ist the framerate ok? how are the controls on vita?

Battlefront 2 is great although it has less content than the console versions and it looks like arse now (it was a very early PSP game.) Elite Squadron is basically made up of pieces from Free Radical's Battlefront 3's carcass.

You sure Elite isn't available in Europe? 'Cause I've been playing it on my UK account on Vita recently and it's on sale right now.

If only somebody made a brand new Battlefront game specially for Vita... I'd pay more than usual price of 40 dollars.

UK here: Is there any way I can download Renegade onto my vita (whether it be downloading to ps3 and transferring)?

Currently downloading Battlefront II and looking forward to finding how it compares to the consoles/PC

Is Renegade Squadron worth it if I already have Elite Squadron?

I've had both years ago on the PSP and recall them being very similar except for the different campaigns but RS one being rather miniscule.

What are some notable changes except for the connected space-surface battles in ES?

I played a disgusting amount of Battlefront II on PSP from 2005-2007. The PSP was the only console I had and at the time this was one of my favourite games for it, along with Wipeout Pure. It'll be interesting to check out the other ones in the series, I'll probably start with Elite Squadron.
