IGN: Splatoon's lack of voice chat is "cheap and lazy"

Nintendo needs to at least include it as an option.

They'll go kicking and screaming into the future eventually. They always do. Online. Smartphone games. Even region locking may be done with according to the latest investor meeting. Even if the NX doesn't have an account system and PS4.5 level graphix, Nintendo will get still trail behind most of its opportunistic competitors in some way.

It is shitty, but with the general set up most modes seem to have, it doesn't look to be the most conducive environment to fostering camaraderie and lasting online friendship anyway, and it will at least cut back on the number of fucking idiot teenage wankers spewing hatefully bigoted bollocks every few matches.

Definite mark against it, but that article made a sodding awful way of putting it too.

Since that's what you're meaning by variations, you're really only missing a 1v1 balloon mode that will never get played because who the fuck wants to gimp themselves using the pro controller.

But if you removed the pro controller option the pitchforks would be out in force.

WHY DIDN'T YOU SUPPORT 25 CONTROLLER TYPES THE GAMEPAD SUCKS RAWR.

I'm sorry but that's not what "three weapons with variations" means.

You'd either have to say three weapon variations per class (but there are no classes) or five weapons with variations.

It seems to be a design choice rather than cheap and lazy. Considering the backlash i feel as though it may have been a poor choice. It doesn't impact me because if i play a game like this i'll be playing with friends and we will all be playing in the same area.

Yup, one of the reasons why I won't buy the game. The demo was fun, but it were just some short sessions to try it out. Playing it seriously and having fun with my friends isn't really possible.

it doesn't really matter that the game has voice chat or not because it's irrelevant to Nintendos audience. Since splatoon caters to the Nintendo core, or "Wii U audience ", which largely doesn't play shooters or has any history of playing team based games on the console. So it really won't matter much to the success of this game. The Wii U owners claiming voice chat doesn't matter or they don't play with friends online basically proves the point of why bother with voice chat on a console that's audience doesn't understand the use of such an option.

It's not because Nintendo is cheap or Lazy, it's because they work in strange ways, like why the LOZ series still lacks real voice acting.

This is how I see it, as well. Online chat coats a game in a specific type of atmosphere. It gets taken more seriously since you're accountable to teammates and rival's actions, and coordinating strategy becomes more relevant and intense, and potentially personal. My guess is that Nintendo doesn't particularly want to be associated with that, they want people to have fun winning and losing alike. To pick it up, play for a while, then forget about it and go back to what they were doing. It's easy to say 'you could always disable chat', but the absence of chat at least creates a level playing field for everyone, without the advantage of coordination.

If you really want to chat outside of the game, you still can, so it's far from the end of the world. But I can see why Nintendo doesn't want to add it, and I don't think it has anything to do with cheapness or laziness.

Yup, exactly this! Friday night during the Global Testfire I was having so much fun whether I won or lost. I can't say the same about when I play COD, because I'm being reminded how much I sucked, lol. But if this is what they're going for, then they're doing it right. This is a touchy subject, and I understand everyone's opinions on it. But at the same time, we all should have known better than to think that other FPSs would have influenced how Splatoon would end up being.

For those of us that own a Wii U and one of the other consoles (PS4 here), we'll just have to wait and see if we're picking up our PS4/X1 controllers to play FPSs over there more than picking up our Gamepad to play Splatoon.

While I personally don't see the need for Voice chat I have to agree, there should always be an option for it. Especially for your team. But you know, the kids.

We don't even know what the content is yet but people are already declaring it as "limited" or "unfinished." Can we at least wait until we get actual proof that the game's "incomplete" before flying off the handle and pulling out pitchforks?

You didn't hear this kind of shit when Destiny launched.

Actually, you did hear this when Destiny launched. Just not to this extent because the PS4 and Xbox One have OS level solutions to what should be a non-issue because Nintendo should be with the rest of the other platform holders.

Its more than three weapons, as well as multiple sub-weapons and weapon variations.
We don't know the length or quality of the campaign, so... that's already not knowing whats in the game.
There is a third mode that's a community event, first one is in June.
The local-multi 1v1.

I mean, your very "bullet" shows that we don't actually know whats in the game in its entirety, we have a vague list.
1. I know that it has more than three weapons. Maybe I just wasn't clear with my post.

2. Semantics but we simply don't know what the single player content entails.

3.To call a community event a mode is a bit of a stretch but sure.

4. The more we know the better.

Well obviously we don't know what is in the game down to the finest detail but we have an idea based on the info we've been given, contrary to what chindogg said.

are you even trying to shit up this thread at this point? least you could do is research your inane whining before diarrhoea farting it onto a forum.
Real mature. I know that there are more than 3 weapons.

Main weapons: shooter, charger, rollers. Under these weapons there are different variations.
The shooter has a subset of weapons such as the splattershot, blaster, 5.2 gal, jet squelcher and a few others. The same goes for the other two.

It's such a basic feature of any multiplayer-focused shooter, it makes you wonder what the hell they're thinking by excluding it. It just makes Nintendo look even more ass-backwards than they already are.

Regarding the "Think of the children" argument:

Nintendo hasn't been shy about including report user functions on Miiverse and Smash Bros.

They can certainly afford to pay those same moderators to oversee Splatoons online community. Any abusive player can be reported, and moderators can take action by permanently locking voice communication privilege between those two specific players. Done.

If I were Nintendo, I'd put adding Voice Chat behind a small pay wall to make it a "choice." Oh, if you have it, you can talk to other people who have it and an emblem is next to your name.

This would make it a little unfair for other people, but...

It would eliminate the "legal safety" issue.

Also, everyone who wants it can get it.. unless they are "cheap and lazy."

Nintendo makes some money which makes them happy and the people who want voice chat get voice chat. The only bad thing is that this sets up a precedent of features being placed behind pay walls.....

I'm waiting for them to lock one in an amiibo.

Again, Nintendo's online is free, so yeah it's actully more than cheap. Plus, the audience needing voice chat for this game is probably a small minority. Not worth the hassle and it doesn't fit with Nintendo's "good spirit" philosophy.

Nintendo is destined for mediocrity.

1. Not clear at all.
2. Yes, I agree... hence why I disagreed with you.
3. I'd consider it a mode since, well, it has different rules.
4. Indeed. There's also the mini-games at the arcades.

I don't disagree that we have a general idea. I disagree with the parroting of "game is light" from certain people as if they had video evidence. I was originally skeptical on five maps. After playing the game, I don't think I will care because I think the maps have very good design and good to decent re-playability. God knows I played Spacemarine PvP, and heck if I remember seeing more than three maps.

As I said, review copies are out Monday and several reviewers have already said they'll let us know what they think well ahead of time. Then we'll know.

The "online is free" excuse is horrible. PS3 games had voice chat, it was standard. Ps2 games had voice chat.

Ever since the N64 days for every step forward taken in technology there's one or two steps back.

N64 most powerful system of its gen but uses expensive cartridges and only hold 64MBs max.

Gamecube more powerful and cheaper than a PS2 and finally uses optical media (6years after the competition) but they're puny preopretary mini-DVDs that hold 1.5GBs

Wii finally uses proper discs that hold 8GBs but they're preopretary, the console is barely more powerful than a GC, it's online infrastructure sucks and uses cumbersome friend codes.

You get the idea. At this point the very idea of Nintendo releasing a first party online focused shooter is so incredible to be true that I knew there had to be some caveat. Lack of Voice chat seems like it may be just that.

Nothing strange about LOZ not having voice acting either.
I hope LoZ has voice acting, even if the alternative is just as relevant to many other people for good reasons. Even if the alternative would in no way shape or form preclude me from playing exactly the way I want to anyway. I don't want text exposition even as an option. Why?

'Fuck text.'

Thats not strange tho

I cannot, for the life of me, understand why there's people defending this.

I can't play the game to comment on the quality but between the lack of voice chat and the content roll out, it seems like Nintendo are trying to kill the game.

You own a very unique PS3.

While not part of the system OS, I can't think of many online games that didn't have voice chat.

You must understand this is disingenuous.

By your standards Call of Duty has 5 weapons. Assault Rifle, Shotgun, SMG, LMG, Sniper.

It's also a simplification, ignoring sub and power weapons.

I thought this was a very 'Nintendo' thing to do, because they rather hold their image as a family friendly game console than anything else. Just like always, they try to limit things in weird ways to uphold that. I think this issue is more in line with the "16 digit wii friend code issue' than it is about being cheap and lazy. I mean, you look at that demo that recently came out and that shit was good to go. There are just easier ways to cut corners in a MP oriented game than scraping voice chat (like scraping the singleplayer, less weapons, stuff like that).

Its disappointing for sure that they're culling options but voice chat has never been the reason I've stuck around for online multiplayer games so I can't sympathize with the bottom line that it's the reason for people playing the games passed release. I could point to the continuous online presence on some of the worst Nintendo online games as examples, and from a personal angle, TF2 has kept me entertained for years without me using it. Good content and support prevails among all else. With voice chat I'd rather just settle playing with friends.

But yes, it would be cool with an opt-in. It's just not a dealbreaker for me.

One additional point:

Nintendo has a sweet, talented, and fun community of friendly people. These are people I want to banter with in a multiplayer Nintendo game.

How dare you presumptuously and falsely assume that voice chatting with them would be "toxic" or that they would "curse you and your mother". You have no basis to make those claims, which completely mischaracterize the Nintendo community.

I haven't followed tech on this front: is it possible to have a free skype (or similar) multi voice chat session, from a smartphone or tablet?

I assume close friends would use it.

One of my fondest gaming memories is playing Uncharted 2 online with my best friends.
It was the first (and last) period when we would join every night and play for hours.

Only one of these friends has a Wii U, so having voice chat with him will be easy anyway through facetime.

Clearly not as convenient, but not that hard either with some motivation.

It's not over embellishing people's complaints. It's exactly what's happening. You've done it yourself in the past.

"Gamepad sucks, give controller support."
"Why support so many controllers? Just give me one standard option like the other consoles."

We just had this in the guy complaining about Pikmin 3 thread.

Every day we have this kind of weird list of bullet points that come back in every single thread despite half of them being solved in their originating threads. I'm just growing tired of constantly seeing the same people make the same arguments in every single thread time after time after time. We're all aware that no party chat sucks and that region locking's bad and that Nintendo should have just made a PS4 or should have gone third party because we'll get Mario on PS4 yay!

It's all the same arguments done to death. It's an endless circlejerk and I'm just tired of seeing the same posts from the same posters in every single thread. Apparently if you have any differing opinion you're an apologist and I'm honestly kinda done ignoring it and am going to start calling it out now.

Alright, thought he was referring to the lack of voice chat as part of the reason why people are calling it unfinished.
