Media Create Sales: Week 20, 2015 (May 11 - May 17)

On this note we might see an increasingly large portion of remaining console development go f2p as companies run out of games to remaster.

That's also ideal to align their games with a paying model vastly preferred in growing Asian markets.

Oh well, at least IS has Maids and Butlers ready for Fire Emblem If so they can recoup the losses incurred on Codename F.L.O.P.

Hopefully Codename S.T.E.A.M. or whatever new game they plan will have the art of Kozaki Yusuke

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.
Wondreful 101 sold almost ~3x more than S.T.E.A.M. in its launch week, despite Wii U having at the time ~1/18 of the 3DS install base nowdays.

Holy shit, this is a whole new level of bomba. Rabbids Land sales sound good now...

And people wonder why Nintendo falls back to Mario. Though I don't think any advertising would have saved STEAM.
I'm guessing this is why Fire Emblem If is getting the Pokemon treatment. They saw the projected sales and said "we need to make money back".

Just seen the previous pages of replies, and for P&Z Mario edition, I'm sure both publishers are happy with the numbers, this game was made for the western market, japanese sales are a bonus.
Of course, if this bombs in the west, this would have been mediocre, but I doubt Nintendo has seen it as more than a good partnership and experiment (popular mobile game mixed with one of their IPs to test possible appeal amongdt various audiences).

Holy... I've been checking out these threads for a while now and I think this is one of the worst weeks I've ever seen. And RIP Codename S.T.E.A.M damn!

Will the n3ds see a price cut now? It cant be possible to continue selling at this rate.
I wonder if it will even have a big enough of a effect on the sales right now...

It will probably see a price cut some time later this year but for now it will first depend on a slew of new releases next month to at least keep the hardware sales afloat.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
So this is what a dying market looks like - 20-30% YoY declines. Ugly stuff. And once Konami and Sega get MGS V and Persona 5 out and set sail for good there will be very little of significance coming to consoles from Japan beyond Nintendo and Square (both increasingly focussed on the west).

Even though this week in itself is obviously not significant, seeing such awful sales brings home how established the mobile transition really is. I really hope Nintendo do a good job with their next handheld.

We shouldn't ignore that 3DS is quite old already, it's going for the 5th anniversary next February and it's almost at 19 millions sold. Plus, software sells pretty well on the console overall. So, I believe current Japan's market situation is more due to all the other platforms not doing well enough / well at all, while 3DS basically sustained it a lot in these past years, and this year's numbers are the proof of how relevant 3DS has been for the overall market, while the rest underperformed / underperforms.

And next gen we'll probably see the consequences: the odds of a Vita successor (especially if we consider it a "traditional" handheld gaming device) are pretty low, Nintendo will probably go for the "mutiple form factors, OS/functions/games shared across all of them) route, in which case the classic distinction between handheld and home consoles would lose most of its relevance, it'd be different. Let's not even talk about Xbox.

Still, Nintendo needs to act soon to bring 3DS sales to more decent levels. The next few months have a good amount of games, from lower level stuff to good to great stuff, there's material to work with. And, since AC:HHD is Summer over there, I highly doubt Nintendo won't announce anything relevant for this end of the year, first party-wise. I think a price cut would be a good move as well (if they can do it): when you think about it, the console has the same prices (actually, slightly up) since 2011 (OG model --> New 3DS) and 2012 (3DS XL --> New 3DS XL), so there's good room on that front. It depends on how such a move would affect their financial forecasts.

Will there still be a console market in Japan that's worth their while in 2020 though?

Unless something drastic happens, probably not. At the same time I don't think anybody can predict accurately what the games market is going to look like in 5 years.

It's a port of a remaster of two fourteen year old games everybody has already played, released on an unpopular console. Not that surprising in my opinion. And judging by the demo STEAM is just a plain bad game with an artstyle that doesn't appeal to a lot of people and especially not Japanese gamers.

It's true that the numbers for FFX PS4 isn't surprising, but for it to be #1 with numbers like that? I thought Codename STEAM was fun, but putting that aside, under 2K for a Nintendo published game on the 3DS is terrible.

There's a clear decline in sales of console games. As much as I try to oppose it, mobile is here it seems to be at for the future. This kinda thing makes me feel that Konami made a smart business decision leaving the industry and focusing on mobile/whatever else they do.

Given the reaction in this thread I guess it's not surprising Codename STEAM bombed. People were apathetic or didn't know what to make of it given the art-style. Very sad because the game is really good. Hopefully this is one of those things that goes underground for a decade basted with cult love and retro gamers of the future rediscover it.

I love how easily predictable it's all becoming. lool

"Hardware sales are down again! But bu the West!"
"Japan is doomed!!1"
"FF15! Persona 5! MGSV!"

In steps Nirolak & duckroll.

"Dat mobile gaming. Look at that glaringly obvious trend."

I almost hate coming to this thread to bring bad news but....

Last thread showed total for Wii U games. What do we have there?

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1045399&page=13

914. [WiU] Rabbids Land (Ubisoft) (2013/06/06) - 2,335
989. [WiU] F1 Race Stars: Powered Up Edition (Codemasters) (2013/06/27) - 1,744

Did I forget to read that if those sales were first week or LTD?

Goddamn Rabbids Land is outselling Codename STEAM.

It's just a far worse Valkyria + X-Com wannabe with terrible art and boring ass mission design. Doubt anyone will care. Strategy fans will just remember the superior games which inspired this instead. Thank God Nintendo released a meaty demo, I'm sure it helped lots of people save their money.

See? If duckroll hates it, it must be good.

It's pretty good actually in terms of gameplay. Only it's art style is the big minus since almost everybody does not like it.

Would probably be better if it was in isometric, maps and didn't take 100 years to execute the commands.
Everything about the game feels rough, no polish. Like an beta that was sent out in preparation for the sequel.

I wonder what percent of codename buyers purely bought it because of the amiibo oncart FE dlc.
must be massive failure for a IP on it's own

That was the impression I had of it without playing the demo...lol

Almost dead market at this point, sad stuff.

The next generation Japan will only get two consoles: Nintendo's NX and the PS5. The market will not disappear, but it will be centered towards the hardcore crowd in the case of Sony and kids in the case of Nintendo (20 millions both consoles combined?). Media Create threads will have less pages than the PAL threads.

Probably not?

But the idea of what a console is might change completely

Maybe the Whole Cell Phone dock to TV will be a thing? All in one devices could be a reality in the not so distant future

I just hope the quality software and the artform dont go out the window. Mobile still has a way to go but its getting there

What if Codename Steam sold a lot more digitally?!
jk, mocking some users for some previous weeks results

Here's me hoping VR comes sooner that later and it lights a fire or something :|

I doubt it will light a fire anywhere, but I'm in the minority.

No for the audience focuses (a bit cliché much?) and the pages totals (as long as there's more details here and the market is too different, unlike npd vs pal).

PS4closure soon heading to less than 10k/week after the barrage of high profile games.

Good luck to Square Enix.

They're in a rather hard place.

For their flagship titles like FFXV and KH3, they really want them as PS4 games for the larger Western audience, but it does harm the Japanese audience.

For titles like Star Ocean, there isn't really a great fit anywhere, so they're sitting on what looks like the best option.

Seeing that Dragon Quest X for 3DS is in Famitsu Top 30, I wonder why Square didn't release the Version 3 for the system too lol

I just wanted to say that this is the first time I saw a Gretchen gif and it's amazing, thank you.

Also, sucks to be IS I guess. Maybe there's hope in the international release?

Does it really harm the Japanese audience though? Where else would they put it? We're talking about games coming out in 2016-2017. What platforms could FFXV and KH3 be released on in Japan which would assure higher sales in 2016-2017? :)

At the rate we're going cross-gen PS3 would still be stronger!

I'm not being serious to note.

Edit:

I can't believe I missed the opportunity to say "Phones".

I'm of the opinion that if VR "lights a fire," it will do so first and foremost with a non-gaming application. For instance, I suspect something like virtual tourism will be a greater draw than VR Elder Scrolls will be for mass adoption.

But as always, predictions are tough.

It's just a digital cloud streaming client. I figured they just enabled the expansion material for everyone given that it's a colossal rip-off, is that not the case?

I think the best argument to be made would be that these shouldn't have been 2016-17 games in the first place. FFXV is famously and horribly delayed, and SE sat on the KH franchise (outside the handheld spinoffs, which do matter) for all of last generation for some reason.

But that bridge is burned now, so I guess the best option left to them is PS4.

Oh I absolutely agree. That was sort of my point too, that given the circumstances, these games can't really be on any other platform, but they really shouldn't be in this position to begin with.

Oh yeah, I agree with that, I was talking about gaming focus.
As long as the technology isn't perfect and is still the price of a console (+ other reasons such as social stigma or lack of adequate experiences), this will be a problem for more than a niche appeal imo
