Sony is officially helping with funding and development with Shenmue 3

Always felt like it would be Sony to bankroll this game. Well, they now know fans want it and with their financial muscle I'm sure Yu will realise his vision for the finale. Lets hope it doesn't include Ryo farting into Space.

I don't mind the "gauging interest" approach to Kickstarter, but one thing I don't understand is the economics of it. The most passionate fans who are donating to the Kickstarter are already going to receive a copy of the game. Are they just assuming there are a lot of other fans, that aren't contributing to the Kickstarter, who will buy the game at its time of release? How else do they justify piling on more funding?

They're hoping that with the buzz it got from E3 and the insane pace it had in funding that others online looked at and went "Hmm maybe I should buy it?" and with it being a PC and the rising amount of people on steam is has a high chance at selling alot.

I'm convinced they made a deal with sega to release the first two games remasters. No way they are just dropping Shenmue 3 without that. Maybe they will announce it at Playstation Experience.

Come on are we serious here. We've been waiting 15 fucking years for this to happen and all hope was lost of this ever coming out. Are we really going to complain about this?
The people complaining about this don't care about Shenmue, they just like E3 drama. GAF is always like this around E3, and it's tiresome.

So apparently, to some of you, the fact that this game will now have real, significant support by way of funding from a major publisher (something the kickstarter was meant to achieve in the first place) is "scummy" and we shouldn't support such a "horrible" business practice.

Fucking lol. Some of you really need to wake up and think clearly about how games get made and the associated costs. Were you expecting them to make Shenmue III for $2 million?

I think this is actually great and expected since it was announced on Sony's conference.

The game would've cost $60 if it was completely funded by Sony. Lets be glad Sony is also chipping in. We need this game to be amazing and not a huge disappointment after all these years of waiting.

I have no problems with this approach to such niche games like Shenmue. The fans proved that they're willing to vote with their wallets, hence the game is happening.

Agreed. The Kickstarter is like pre-ordering the game, with cool bonuses. And now we're getting the mythical Shenmue 3. It's a win for us all.

Don't care if publishers use Kickstarter as long as I'm getting the games I want to play and one of the choices for funding is that I get a copy of the game. Even better if it's at a discount. I can see why people have a problem with it but I just can't.

It's kinda sad that people were clinging on to this as some kind of "gotcha" in the first place. Some people around here are truly salty that Sony pulled one of the most legendary conferences of all time.

Leave it to the internet gaming community to bitch and moan about MOTHERFUCKING SHENMUE III. Truly nothing can exist without massive whining.

I think Xbox only players deserve this game too. But Sony is not in the wrong here. They are offering a helping hand to YS and Capcom in both cases. Apparently MS doesn't use this method yet or they don't care because its not Call of Duty big.

Well there it is

Are you serious? Is this your first kickstarter? You thought 2 mil was all they needed to fund Shenmue 3?

Come one Bruce, they knew full well that the KS would bring in a helluva lot more than $2m. If that's all they really wanted, they should close the KS and stop accepting any more funding... I wonder if they will now that there's official funding from Sony.

You just said my point.

Huh? I thought:

"It didn't say "this is basically a petition to see if interest is there""

Implied that it was scummy that they weren't making it obvious. Or that it should have just been a petition.

Sorry if that isn't what you intended.

I really hope it's not just money they're contributing because if Sony are involved in the development in some way then the video they showed should be manageable if you look at the first party games shown at E3.

Very true, but this assumes everybody would be aware of the finances of the previous games or of gaming in general.

If I've learned anything at all over the past few years, its that your average gamer does NOT understand the budgeting of a top class video game.

Clearly as you didn't seem to understand it either.

PC to XBox One streaming in the house.

It is still the PC version.

Plus, if you have a competent PC, what is the point of streaming through the XBox?

(Simple answer is "playing on TV" and "controller", yet you can still stream to your TV and use the XBox controller on a PC without the XBox, I do it now.)

Seems like a "fluff" feature to me.

The "guage interest" excuse only works if they're planning on giving all that money back

No, KS has expressly stated in multiple forms that using the service as a gauge for interest is a completely viable use. They are still held liable to providing the products offered in tiers and rewards.

It was expected. It's also expected that the PC version to come somewhere in 2018 and that's pretty much what is stopping me currently from pledging.

Regardless of feelings on the usage of kickstarter, having Sony's devs and tools behind the game should help them fully realize their vision. Can't ask for more than that.

People are inferring some rather nefarious shit about Sony here that someone who's been following all along can see is absurd.

Yu Suzuki has wanted to make this game for years. 3 years ago he learned about Kickstarter and decided he would go that route. Sony gave him stage time during their conference, even saying this had nothing to do with them. The Kickstarter exploded and set all kinds of records so Sony now absolutely wants to get out in front of this and declare their partnership.

It's not like Sony and Suzuki were planning this out in advance, get a grip.

Not understanding the outrage.

The platforms were specifically mentioned. You support the project with that detail in mind.

Kickstarter is really good at gauging actual interest by seeing how much dedicated fans will throw at a game without much marketing. You can use that and extrapolate how much people would pay for the actual game with proper funding and marketing.

Same thing happened with Bloodstained.

This game needs at least 40 million to really be a true sequel. Does anyone here expect that kind of money to be raised completely by Kickstarter? Seriously.. I don't see the problem.

There has been so much doubt over the commercial viability of Shenmue that Sony had to make sure there was interest.

I'm really thinking that some people here are just salty this has a big chance of not hitting XB1.

No funding = no interest in the game = no need for Sony to invest money = no Shenmue III

Have you thought this way yet?

This makes no sense!

I don't like this approach at all, and it makes yesterday's reveal messed up as hell. Sony knows that there is Interest in the game, otherwise they wouldn't feature it on their stage and claim before showing it that "fans have been asking for this game for a long time".

It is complete nonsense that they needed a kickstarter to see if people were interested.

During the presentation I honestly thought that the count down was going to end with them saying "oh look, the game just got funded".

Well to be honest, I'm having mixed feelings about this stuff too. I mean, Sony could've perfectly fund this game without having to do that Kickstarter thing, they also pretty much lied to us when they said they weren't involved. But I understand this is more of a business deal between Yu and Sony right now, the interest has been gauged and the project has been officially greenlit. People are now having the chance to basically pre order the game and get some special stuff with it too (depending on your "donation")

its Sony so its fine

thats how it works these days right?
Feel free to cry on anyone's shoulder.

The "guage interest" excuse only works if they're planning on giving all that money back

So the people who donated enough to get a copy of the game are going to get that back too right?

And what you typed doesn't make any sense anyway. The whole point of doing this is to find out how many people want it enough to put real money down, rather than just pining on message boards.

So having a contrary opinion is "hating" now?

I'm glad for Shenmue fans, but the ramifications of this will be big.
Beloved abandoned games may be able to get publisher support if they demonstrate a passionate following?

Dire "ramifications" indeed.

Great for Shenmue fans. Finally getting the sequel they deserve.

Sucks for anyone not owning a PC or PS4 who hoped a Kickstarter might include them in the Stretchgoals.

This is probably 2 or 3 years out, so things could change, so hopefully I have a PS4 by then.

Acording to my old EGM (Game mag from the 90's)
it's says shenmue cost exceeded 100 million dollars?

Was this ever true?

edit:

US$70 million
"Shenmue on the Dreamcast is more notorious for its overambitious budget than its poor sales figures.
While it sold a respectable number of units, at the time of release, the game had the record for
the most expensive production costs (over US$70 million), and its production time was 5 years.

So my question is:
Is sony paying for the other 65 million dollars?
