Even under the premise of things controlling the same and games translating perfectly from a technical standpoint, this doesn't particularly amount to competing in a meaningful way for the global home dedicated market.

Essentially, the two are not mutually exclusive and/or why the qualifier "soft" is put before exit. Nintendo can release something Ouyaish that plugs into a television, or some handheld with TV-out function. They can still for all intents and purposes be exiting a space they can no longer compete in properly.

To put it another way, if all one had to do to compete in the home segment was to release a set-top box with mobile parts, then that's what everyone would be doing as it would require significantly less capital.

When was Nintendo this easy to predict? I don't think they've ever done the predictable (or even logical) thing to be honest. I'm not saying it doesn't sound unreasonable, but it is the weirdos at Nintendo we're talking about.

Absolutely no mention of Disney Magical Castle 2 being announced? I assume it has potential to do decently in Japan, although to be fair we have no details.

I think Nintendo has been badly burned for the second generation in a row by operating at a fundamentally different power/architectural level than the rest of the market/PC, and I think they won't want to do that again.
I doubt Nintendo feels burned by the success of DS and Wii.

In the many mistakes they made the power of WiiU wasn't their biggest. They could've released a "lower end xbox one" and still fail in almost exactly the same way.

Ouch. That's harsh for a title that was still reasonably high profile a few years ago. Or is it because it's a late port/rerelease?
"The Best" is usually a rerelease, like a Greatest Hits I think. Plus this is a year old.

Wait what? Splatoon is just a new IP that works really well with the GamePad.... not sure what you mean by Splatoon was made to supplement Amiibo lol.
cosmic was talking about splatoon and it creating momentum for the wii u if they follow it up with more games

and im saying it is too late for wii u to make any kinda come back, success of splatoon is to help push amiibo brand, not to revive wii u sales

07./05. [PS4] The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt <RPG> (Spike Chunsoft) {2015.05.21} (¥8.856) - 8.723 / 111.834 (-34%)

Really crazy result. I never expected breaking 100k barier with 2 previous ones being only on PC and PC+xbox.

So after E3 what are the games now coming out this year?

3DS : Zelda 4Swords, Zelda Legends, Metroid FF
WiiU : Mario Tennis, Starfox 0, AC board game

Star Ocean 5 is 2015 fall right (PS3/4)
I can't think of anything else....

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
So SE seems to be dropping everything they have on PS4 - is there still anyone doubting that DQXI will be on PS4 ?

i really doubt nintendo will be handheld or console only with NX, it is the same hybrid thing again that doesn't make sense coz you're cutting out a whole platform of revenue

"nx" will share the same software architecture, to ease the ports of their games/assets for both so how does that even make sense if it's going to be only one console?

So SE seems to be dropping everything they have on PS4 - is there still anyone doubting that DQXI will be on PS4 ?
yeah sony ignoring even xbox one for their games says alot

only thing is, dq only matters in japan, so i wouldn't bet on it

can i say that i find it amusing that square enix released final fantasy: not monster hunter edition on 3ds while final fantasy: not pokemon edition is on vita/ps4
my exact thoughts

The major limitations on mobile performence are heat production/energy consumption. If neither were a concern, it would be a fairly simple matter for Nintendo to get a custom version of a mobile GPU that was capable of performing at a vastly higher level when plugged in than when used on battery.

Do you have examples of consumer devices that work that way? (I think I'm having a memory lapse…)

Nah I actually do feel like it was significant mistake. For nothing else, than the fact it gave absolutely no reason for people to buy third parties on their console. They had a year head start. Being able to taught play next gen COD at 1080p or what have you would have certainly taken the wind out of Sony's marketing campaign as well as free online. When you really look it that's exactly what the PS4 has been riding on. The Wii U did in fact have a semblance of third party support at the start. The greater visual upgrade would have kept those versions of the game competitive, considering neither the PS4 or XB1 are powerhouses.

The Xbox 360 did that exact same thing and made massive gains despite charging for online. Nintendo squandered that opportunity.

They did everything on PS3 too.
everything they've been announcing or revealed has been for ps4 first and then xb1 after

sure they did a bit of it with ps3/360 but it feels like they want to focus on ps4 since it is the undisputed king of consoles this generation WW

yep, such a wasted opportunity, they could have been the most powerful console, help "fund" few big third party games, namely COD to show third partys they can sell something if their console isn't seen as piss poor in performance and the rest will jump on board, as most third parties were just resting on their laurels waiting for ps4/xb1

Bravely Second deserves to do bad. Shit dialogue and shit story.

I bought it for a discount and regret it. Put 70 hours into the first.

KH skipped PS3. DQ skipped PS3. What FF spin offs did PS3 get? PS4 has so far got Type series, Dissidia and World of FF. Its also getting FF7 remake xD

There's more on the way.
Yet it still is not the most sold console this gen. Hell, right now it is even tracking behind Wii U, although not for very long anymore i guess.
Most DQ games are on 3DS, it's the most sold system in Japan (which seems to be the main criteria for DQ), Vita coming second.

And looking back at DQ 7, releasing on PSone with PS2 already on the market, the PS3 is more likely to get the next DQ games, along the 3DS.

Altough the Wii did get DQ X after the Spinoff, i guess the game can be seen as a anomaly, since it is now available on multiple systems.

Western third parties wouldn't have had significant sales on wii u if it was more powerful. It's a wash. Forget about western third party properties and nintendo. Not what's going to sell and not what they should focus on.

I'm super happy for Splatoon. Hopefully Nintendo will take notes and realise new IPs can be successful. It even helped shifting more Wii Us, even though in the grand scheme of things that impact is still negligible.

Also happy for Rhythm Heaven. Love rhythm games, and honestly we need more of those, specially if they have the quality and quirkiness of Rhythm Heaven. :)

That ship has no sailed, but do you honestly if the wii u had comparable power to the PS4, free online and essentially the same versions of cod but was cheaper having, had come out a year longer, it wouldn't have sold a lot more third party games?

The X360 came after the PS2, the PS2 for gods sake and it cleared up. Brand loyalty really isn't all it's cracked up to be.

still listed and I'm still waiting

I'll give them one more year before I play the steam version

They did everything on PS3 too.

Not really. No Dragon Quest, no FF spin offs etc.

This generation already we're getting: Nier 2, KH3, FFXV, FFVII Remake, Star Ocean 5 and Dragon Quest Heroes. I'm sure theres more to come and I wouldn't be surprised if we saw more DQ on the system either, whatever form that may come in.

sad but true.

Out of curiosity is square known for taking way too long to release games? It seems every new game they announce seems to be compared with the long dev time of ffxv? Ffxv could just be an outlier right? Would they really continue to tease games 3 or 4 years in advance after the situation with ffxv?

I expect 2015 to be a bit of a write off for PS4 in Japan. Its been bad but certainly not disastrous.

In 2016 we can expect a price cut and even more announcements to add to what is shaping up to be a spectacular library. (DQ and MH may be a realstiic possibility).

Japanese console gaming will rise again.

They announce early for buzz, but don't release early because of low install base.

Its a deal for them.

I don't think Dragon Quest is too crazy, but people really still think Monster Hunter is a possibility?
The only reason Dragon Quest is a possibility is cause that's what Mr. Hori wants. Monster Hunter is a much more business oriented franchise, with directors/staff constantly changing.

I mean there were like 100 Monster Hunter games just announced too.

It will be the same as PS3. Was slow until pricecut, slim model and FFXIII came knocking.

Verendus mentioned a PS4 MH game. I believe him, he has racked up a lot of credibility these past few months.

The Wii entered the generation at a point where early in its life it could benefit from the continued relevance of the PS2 to the Western market, meaning that a lot of multi-platforms got PS2/Wii/PSP versions along with 360/PS4 ones.

Given that almost everything now is One/PS4/PC, I can't see how multiplats+Nintendo exclusives on a very simple, PS4-esque piece of hardware would not be a fairly promising approach. Nintendo's advantage is in its exclusives.

Do you have examples of consumer devices that work that way? (I think I'm having a memory lapse…)

Mobile CPUs already throttle themselves when on power-saver which is a semi-permanent status for a lot of them. The better example is probably Laptop rather than PC components which can use features like NVIDIA Optimus to switch between GPUs, and throttle their performence.

That said, this strikes me as something closer to what a Western company with less experience of the market(say NVIDIA) would try and do rather than Nintendo.

That's assuming that a price cut, big IPs, and more announcements will actually result in a shift in momentum. We're talking about a market at large here, not just a small group of people who were interested in consoles in the past but have lost interest recently because of a lack of games.

The biggest fear the industry in Japan has is that there is no more market. Obviously they're hoping it isn't the case and now some of them have made a big showing to try and regain that momentum. But we should always be prepared that at the end of the day, there is no market to "rise again".

Yeah, I see it more like how much is there to salvage.

It will be the same as PS3. Was slow until pricecut, slim model and FFXIII came knocking.

Verendus mentioned a PS4 MH game. I believe him, he has racked up a lot of credibility these past few months.
Don't need to go to Verendus for that one.

Capcom Korea's job postings suggest you're getting Monster Hunter Frontier 2.
