Final Fantasy 7 Remake Announced (First on PS4)

I wonder if it was intentional, or they named him Nanaki and didn't realize it's an anagram.

On the one hand, it's not an anagram in Japanese (Japanese is syllabic and ナナキ/na-na-ki isn't an anagram of アナキン/a-na-ki-n). On the other hand, they may still have considered it a pun with a bit of knowledge of English.

I believe Kitase is on the record of stating that the Star Wars movies were his main inspiration to get into movies (and made it into gaming instead). Would not surprise me one bit. Did not put those together in my head before. Anakin = Nanaki = mind blown.

Ads sure were something back then lol

I still think that FF7 had the greatest ad campaign ever. It seemed like the first time a game was really presented as being an event that made you feel like you had to be part of it. The commercials did a really good job of that

I totally agree, you had to be a part of it and it worked.
I wonder if they are going to be this aggressive with their ad campaigns when it's close to release.

They should do it for old times sake.

So have they announced what game engine they will use? Luminious or UE4?

The 'leaks' that popped up on the day of Sony's conference mentioned both CyberConnect2 assisting development and UE4 being used.

Not sure the validity, but considering KH3 is using UE4 (right?), it wouldn't surprise me.

Nomura said he wants to get it out as soon as he can.
If they're serious about a 2017 release then I don't see them waiting around for Luminous to finish.

It's funny watching those to see how late game some of the scenes are. I hope the marketing campaign for the remake is big and really well done.

Yeah, KH3 is using UE4. If this uses UE4 I can see it being done faster than expected. Waiting around on Luminous will just add development time and make things a struggle if they want to hit the 2017 20th anniversary deadline.

The beauty of Unreal Engine 4 is its versatility. Kingdom Hearts III looks phenomenal. I would have never guessed it was made using a UE.

My problem with Unreal Engine 3 is that all games kinda looked similar. Batman Arkham games, Gears of War, Enslaved, DmC, etc etc, all looked like they came from the same engine. UE4 looks like they can make almost anything within reason. So if it powers FF7r, I wouldn't mind.

The reaction that the trailer received should be all the reason that Sony and Square need to get behind it again with another big marketing campaign. This isn't some niche game that just happens to have really loud supporters, it's a really big thing. The E3 trailer is sitting at 9.2m views right now, which makes it the second most watched E3 video behind only the new Battlefront gameplay.

Like I said before, the most telling thing about this trailer is that it was clearly directed at those of that that have played it, yet there have been a lot of people that have never played FF7 that have talked about how excited they are for this after watching the trailer. I'd guess that any reservations Square had about remaking FF7 were eased the moment they saw how people reacted to the trailer. This will be one of the biggest games of this generation.

The reaction alone is enough reason for Sony to pursue full console exclusivity regardless of whatever money they have to forward to Square. Final Fantasy VII was one of the greatest reasons to own a PSX back in the 90's. They should chase that same legacy, but I doubt they will.

I am not well-versed in gaming engines, but do they actually lock games into a certain "look"? Guilty Gear Xrd is Unreal 3 and looks nothing like those games.

I know I'm far from the only one, but this game was my first non-Pokemon serious RPG. I went into it completely blind, never heard of it, just picked it at random to borrow from a friend cause it had 3 discs and a cool meteor logo. No idea it was so popular. I'd played a lot of his games before, but nothing ever wowed me until this one. I was worried I wouldn't get it cause it was seventh in a long series, but my friends said it wouldnt be a problem.

The back of the box said it was "quite possibly the greatest game ever made" and had some ugly monster on it. I scoffed at though yeah right, wasn't sure it would be my type of game, but I loved it. Right from the opening movie.

I wasn't much of a gamer then, only played Pokemon, some Mario, and licensed games like Yugioh and Disney. This game got me more into gaming and looking into other series.

I'm so happy for this, made me kinda sad to hear Nomura say he and the team were getting kinda old. Might be the end of the road for some of them.

Didn't know it was running on UE3, that's awesome. I'm not sure about locking into a certain look though.

An engine is a tool.

The quality and style of the things made with it depend solely on the hands that use it.

True, but I swear that most Unreal Engine 3 games looked similar unless heavily modified in the previous generation.

I suppose my concern with UE4 is that it won't give FFVII all the bells and whistles that Luminous has given XV.

The massive seamless map, global illumination lighting, day/night cycles, weather systems, ridiculous character animations/physics and massive scale (summons, monsters) all at once.

Playing CC first would completely negate Cloud's whole development and triviliaze it into "Zack's living legacy." It would be best to play it afterword, to see what Cloud was like as a young teenager, and to learn about the man who saved him.

I don't think it trivializes it at all. If anything, it adds a lot to Cloud's development, IMO, especially when you look at FF7's lessons and the acts Cloud does himself in CC.

Though, I would probably agree on playing FF7 first before CC but it'd be interesting to go to CC first then FF7. Kind of wish I had that option. =(

If you play CC first, you'll just see Cloud as a phony guy throughout the game.

I can only see that happening if you already hate Cloud or are a real Zack fanboy, lol. But going CC first does remove the mystery.

I'm got around to playing FFVII a little late past its release and I'm glad that part of the game wasn't spoiled for me. Aerith's death was spoiled for me, but at least the timing of it wasn't. I thought she would die near the end of the game. I think discovering Cloud's history was far more interesting. So I'm glad that wasn't the spoiler people always blabbed about when talking about FFVII.

The fact that this thread is an existent thing is surreal. It's been days since we've packed the theatre for the Sony conference, and it still hits a lot of people that this is no longer a passing joke.

Yeah, so it may be forever away, but it'd be safe to say plenty can and will, patiently wait, for this masterpiece.

let's hope they don't screw it up.

As much as I'd love to see VII developed on Luminous, I also don't want to wait for 2020 to play it.
UE4 should be just fine.

As others have said, I just really hope Nomura and Kitase use Ni No Kuni's world map for inspiration:

I have to believe that would significantly cut development time/cost, hit fans on a nostalgic level, & allow controllable dune buggy/submarine/airship/Tiny Bronco flight. I just can't imagine a realistic scenario of taking the size of VII's world and doing it full-3D style like FFXV and completing production in any reasonable amount of time.

Was wondering.

Did Cid have a cigarette in the original game? I know in some art works he did, thought he did too in game. In Heroes of the Storm they removed the trademark cigar from one character due to it bumping up the rating in certain parts of the world. I wonder if that will come into play here.

Yup.
Cid had the cig in battle. I know that for a fact...

Yeah he lights up a cigarette during the victory fanfare.

I actually think it's adding to the story, as I play. I haven't done a playthrough of 7 since I beat CC, so this is actually a really cool thing to me. A lot of "ohhhhh" moments, and I almost feel guilty for trying to flirt with Aerith now. I'm enjoying it, but yea, FF7 -> CC should be experienced first if you haven't played either game.

Whoa, you just blew my mind with Anakin.
Anagram for Nanaki, Red XIII's real name.

Given he's from Cosmo Canyon and all the mysticism and the particular themes that surround that place, it really seems much more likely it's a reference to Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism. He was born Nanak, and his sister was called Bebe Nanaki.

His 'grandpa', Bugenhagen, is also named after another major religious figure, from Protestantism. Cosmo in general is ripe with religious imagery.

This ad is great... Not only "shots fired" literally, but it's almost like FFVII is showing its peen to its ex-lover Nintendo.

See this Nintendo? You can't have this ever again.

Is anyone else going to try and go in blind with FFVII's remake? I'm considering it after we've seen a gameplay reveal. Just so that when I play it I can see everything again as if it were new, like the first time I played it.

Going to be a very difficult task though.

Full 3D all the way.

Oooh, you're going CC -> FF7, fun!

CC makes anything that happens with Cloud and Aeris in FF7 feel bad to me now. =(

I just want to see the very beginning, that's all I need to tell if it's good or not.

I'll try to do the same as with FFXV: wait for the big, meaty trailer a year or so before release and after that go on a media blackout.
FFXV will apparently get its first real story trailer again at gamescom where they officially confirmed the main promo campaign to be rolled out at.

I bet Nomura pulls a Versus and starts with a top down view worldmap and then feels the pressure to go fully 3D!

the only real good thing in CC is some of Zacks development, and his interactions with cloud, in my opinion, and even then it has a great deal of stuff that should be struck down from FF7 entirely, especially how he meets aerith, then theres all the interactions she has with him, its like they made it seem like she cant decide anything without Zack telling her, or deciding for her, its so stupid
