Something been on my mind recently. And that's how perfect the wiiU is as a media consumption device. Specifically referring to it's use in watching online TV. Microsoft may have marketed the Xbox One as the "TV" device but the wiiU is the cord cutters console IMHO.

Why is that? Well the reasons are simple.

1. The controller is the remote.

The wiiU's handy dandy TV button let's you use your gamepad as a universal remote and turn the tv up and down, change channels, and power on and off without ever letting your hands leave the controllers. You can then launch your apps with the same device no switching.

2. Support for the "Big 3".

Amazon, Hulu, and Neftlix. Between these 3 services you basically can watch nearly every big TV series and movie ever conceived. It also has Crunchyroll for anime fans.

3. Off-TV play.

Or should I say watch? You watching an episode of Cut Throat Kitchen and your brother/mother/significant other wants to watch something else? Just flip it to the gamepad and keep going not only has dedicated speakers but a headphone jack to keep from disturbing your significant other.

4. Web Browser

Finally, the wiiU has a fully functioning, intuitive, powerful, and robust web browser. You can suspend any of those aforementioned streaming apps and launch the web browser at any time to look up random stuff about what you are watching, find youtube videos (youtube app sucks use the browser), or pull up more media on various sites all on the TV/pad all while your app is comfortably suspended and can be relaunched at the same point without missing a beat.

The only real problem is Netflix. Their App sucks hot garbage they should take a note from Hulu/Crunchyroll on that as it's missing major features and doesn't use the gamepad for basically anything. I also wish they both would use the wiiU's built in keyboard for typing as it's a bit annoying to use the sticks to type up searches.

Well that's my little epiphany/soap box. I've been using my wiiU as my primary Hulu/Netflix device for the last few weeks and it has replaced my PS4 as my primary media console.
EDIT: Could a Mod possibly change the title to streaming console?

It had potential, but the interfaces are so clunky and everything moves so slow. Watching stuff off screen on the gamepad in that terrible native res is less than ideal too.

I mean, you're right in that these are all positives, but the average tablet does pretty much the same thing as the Gamepad these days. Probably even faster and definitely at a higher resolution.

I can't get the signal to work on the tablet beyond a few feet in a small house. Netflix on it fails to deliver the account system, so my mom account is going to be selected as the only account I can use. It also doesn't have a damn Twitch app. Don't get me started on the fact I've been losing my connection constantly when using YouTube. But my Xbox One does all of that, minus the tablet.

looks fine to me and have never noticed any slowdowns since the big speed boost firmware update

The GamePad and Off TV Play are nice but it doesn't make up for the fact that everything is as slow as balls to get to in comparison to other systems. Also no Blu-ray.

yeah it's pretty nice

the browser handles HD streaming extremely well and I set up a local media server to stream things from my PC. throw in Netflix and I'm all good.

I literally just turned on the console and launched the Hulu app was not slow in any sense of the word.

It's too bad that it can't play blurays, the OS is slow as hell, and the gamepad resolution is so terrible.
No one should use that to watch movies, tv or anything else in hd.

A tablet can't play blurays, but it can do everything better than the Wii U.

It's pretty solid, and once everything on the web is on HTML5 it'll be even more of a beast.

But that being said you're right, the Netflix app needs so basic work, and there's no sports streaming at all on it, which is a big old pile of BS. Nintendo also doesn't even have its own video content on the Wii U, just the 3DS. There was some Pokemon on the Wii U eShop and then they just up and pulled it.

Strap on your hooker ...
Aside from off-TV play, any low priced tablet and a Chromecast can do that stuff way better.

Yes, but does it support Pied Piper compression?

Every tv I have bought in the past few years has amazing media integration from built in apps for hulu/amazon/netflix/hbogo/etc to various media formats supported over USB and DNLA. Don't really see much of a need for media devices anymore, just a media center style PC and fast LAN or wifi around the house.

Lower than PS Vita, actually.

And yes, a real tablet with HD screen and miracast/hdmi out is a superior media player in every regard.

Can't play DVDs or Blu-Rays, the "remote" dies in 3-5 hours, the OS is bloated and slow, Netflix is horribly outdated and doesn't even have access to profiles... and its at least 200$. In what world is this the "perfect" media consumption console?

Lol'ing at some of the 'lol WiiU' comments. It's the touchscreen PLUS TV combo that makes it work so well. It really is great to use, although I haven't tried the XBO with kinect for comparison there.

Also, there's no console OS nastier than the PS4's.

Tea in my head I was talking about streaming lol but the word I used was media consumption. xP

I'm also strictly referring to consoles as in game consoles.

1 doesn't work for me because i use my receiver's remote to control stuff and the cable box

2 isn't available in my country or is available with super shitty selections.

3 is a joke with that crappy screen

4 never gets used because i use my pc to browse the web

Yup to every single one of those. I can't even use Netflix on Wii U due to the lack of profiles.

I don't have a Wii U so I can't compare it but the Xbox One is really great as well. Netflix, Plex, plus a Chromecast on the HDMI in does everything that I need.
