Duelyst Beta is available. Like Hearthstone but less RNG and more tactics

Damn, dayum, Lyonar has some occasional moments when they happen to buff one unit into godhood in one turn, but it's almost nothing compared to how often Magmar can do it.

Just plop down a basic 3/3 Earth Walker in first round as defender.
Enemy doesn't put much of an assault and ignores the Earth Walker, going for the extra mana instead. Round ends with Earth Walker still alive.
Then next round, Earth Walker grows by +1/+1, you cast a +2/+2 buff on it, and yet another buff that gives +1 Attack and the Frenzy ability

You walk towards the general with your 7/6 frenzied Earth Walker and shred the 2 weak units and general with 7dmg hits in one move in round 2. God damn Magmar, you crazy

You know that feeling in games when you switch up your character/whatever in multiplayer for fun or rewards, and suddenly consider changing your main because you're suddenly doing way better than usually?

Just had such a moment with Vetruvian. I was stuck in rank 18-20 for a while, then trying out Vetruvian, in no time at all my rank managed to shoot up to 16 with several winning streaks.

Either the faction is great, my cards is great, OR, Vetruvian's heavy dervish/blast based harassment with the occasional chance to obliterate in close combat really suits me. I also use those 1 mana Airdrop units a lot as sort of summoning beacons

I have a pretty good winrate with Vetruvian. Dervish + blast combo are consistent and pretty good (but not insane).

If there is anyone who want beta codes you can PM me and I will find some codes for you :p

Hopefully this lasts longer than Scrolls.

I have just tried Scrolls after I see a lot of people mentioned it when I talk about this game.

I think I'm not a fan of Scrolls because I do not like how to win the game and how to prevent the objective by spamming units to prevent it. Anyway, I have played it for a few hour. I can miss some important point.

The process of leveling Vetruvian to 11 for the booster pack has taught me one thing that definitely stuck when I went back to Vanar:

Sometimes, when your starting hand calls for it, it is better to either hang back and summon in your corner of the map, or rush to attack the enemy general, and forget the damn extra mana tiles

People scatter their troops, they waste their situational units whenever they go for that extra mana, and in some cases, the extra power they might manage to summon is rendered moot by abandoning tactical positions.
When my Vetruvian general got the Blast and +3 damage artifacts early, I got people to give up super early because they kept fooling around gathering extra resources only to have their troops incinerated.
As Vanar, often they just let you attack the general with your (buffed to) 6/6 Crystal Cloaker.

I've started to appreciate Vanar's arsenal of area denial, stun and semi-removals more. I've outgrown many of the neutral crowd control options finally, I'm not seeing a massive amount of use for Repulsor Beasts anymore even though in the beginning I used to cling on those cards like my life depended on it. Would rather get a beefy fighting mana 3 unit instead, because my deck started lacking strong intimidating units that'd keep people on their toes, and stomp the dispelled or fox-ified minions.

A similar game to this is Faeria, which is also in beta. It's a great time for CCG/TCG players, so many new cool games!

Ya know what, Faeria does make me wish Duelyst had used hex grid instead. With squares, diagonals are always weird.

I played that game but I'm confuse about how to play it :/

Maybe I better read some rule next times but I'm not a fan when I cannot build my 100 % own deck from my cards. (look like it use Card hunter deck building system.)

afaik you can build your deck like in MTG, Hex, HS, etc... There's also a new draft mode that plays very good.

If you want to try it again I can send you a beta code the next time the beta week starts, I always get a lot of codes to spare.

Also, there's any words about an Android version of this game?

Managed to do three Gauntlet runs today. 5-3, 0-3 and 2-3 results.

The run I had most success on was a rather odd Rush-centric Abyss deck. The power of dealing 9+ damage out of the blue with a simple suicide unit turned quite a few situations my way.

I will wait longer for Faeria. I think the game is not ready in many aspects. I think I already have to beta. Do I need the code again?

I do not think Duelyst will enter Android or iOS anytimes soon. Open beta will be next month and Early access at december. They said that releasing it on PC is the priority for now so I do not expect to see it until mid-late of next year.

I think it is good to stick to Magmar or Lyonar in gauntlet. They have strong cards and usually not require much synergy to be effective. When you use to both of them it will be easier to play gauntlet.

Been dying to play this ever since I found this thread a few days ago, looks so slick. Waiting for a key is the worst :(

You're only noticing the added element of positioning your cards on a field while ignoring the other mechanics that are quite similar. You're building card decks where you try to optimize it to suit the ever increasing amount of mana you have during a match, and the goal is to beat your enemy's general while protecting your own. Sound familiar?

Yeah it sounds like Duel of Champions.

Snowpiercer artifact is fantastic in Vetruvian fights, even more so than usual. New round, new obelisk to pop.

Thanks for the key! I have taken enough time to play two battles online, and my first impressions are pretty good.

Thanks for the beta invite. I realize this thread isn't going to gain much traction until the beta is more widely available, but I'm really impressed with what I have played. It feels extremely polished, the art style is great, and it's a pretty innovative marriage of something like FFT and a TCG. I hope they leave beta soon and more people get to experience it.

Just for shits and giggles, I made an Abyss deck that concentrated on having naturally big burly minions survive long enough for me to buff them even further, with a side of Shadow Creep related cards. I don't have that many Abyss cards so the deck ended up being much more neutral than intended.

I also did not expect was that I'd just barely beat Rank 10 player with the deck (I'm still rank 15). I was completely surrounded but one minion was neglected at far corner of the map and that got me the win. I love flying units. Or well, with exception of that 6 mana 6/5 one that I never have a proper chance to play.
ZPpVm10.png
XMadaXx.png

It was a weird, weird match. Mechazor Vanar (mechazor died to Shadow Nova heheh) vs Golem/Shadow Creep Abyss.

By the way, I don't understand how people can stand Hearthstone's card drawing rules. 1 card draw versus Duelyst's 2 card draw plus a card replace.

New patch is up, here are the patch notes

The common attack damage artifacts got either toned down or nerfed. Really happy that Magmar's adamantium claws are now worse than what Snowpiercer used to be. Technically on same level as the new Snowpiercer, but a tad heavier.

Edit: oh wait, hold on... Snow Chaser becoming Frost Vespyr could create some amazing synergy. Similar damage/buff fuel like wraithlings and Sarlac are for Abyss. Or a 5 mana 8/8 with Mark of Solitude and Frostfire

Yea, the game is so good but feedback is pretty underwhelming. Open beta will be next month according to the schedule. I hope we will have more people to talk about this game in near future.

So apparently, if your cards get changed in a patch, then for a short while, you can get 100% of their value in Spirit upon disenchant instead of the usual 20-39%.

I guess that's an incentive to not disenchant all unneeded extra cards immediately, and rather wait for balance patches or when you really want the spirit. Almost considered disenchanting my Wildfire Ankh, but no, despite the nerf I still really like that artifact :) The Vetruvian weapons absolutely needed a nerf, I've won at least 2 matches by equipping Ankh the first round, then Y'kir the second. 5 damage blasts during round 2 when you're going first, feels a bit cheap.

Thanks.

Wow, I've tried this out. It's really cool, I can see where Hearthstone comparison comes from, crafting, quests, units/cards keep lost health, etc. I like how you can move units around, makes it a lot more interesting than Hearthstone, or at least it feels like it's giving me a lot more possibilities.

I'm liking the art a lot, maybe not the character portait art so much but everything else is really good, background and boards themselves are really nice.

Err, add me in the game, if you want, my player name is TheChaos0.

It makes things a bit more complicated as well since minion usage after summoning isn't just "do I trade or hit face?" and that obviously creates a rather steep initial learning curve.

Do the challenges if you feel you don't have the hang of things. They're there to teach you some of the faction bread&butter combos, and how to get the killing move even in the most complicated scenarios

Bouhahaha, I played against them Abyssians... and they had a +1/+1 for each dead minion card out. I took the 1st one real quick, since anything that can be buffed to infinity spells trouble but couldn't take out 2nd one in time. I danced around it for while some time, while chipping away the generals health, then I saw the opening and went for the kill. That felt good. Take that!

I'll give those challenges a go.

The only thing I would love from the game is some flavour text.

Nice. I might stick around. Hearthstone is, well it's a fine game but sometime I cry at RNG (and my lack of ability to do anything about it, other than pray to the Dice Gods) and Hex? I kind of like it but I can't just casually play it and still build my collection up much.

Using 3 Sundrop Elixirs when you have 2 Sunrisers on the field is some obnoxious shit.

The 2 draws plus one card change a turn keep those top deck wars at bay most of the time

That's the card. It didn't get quite as bad though, it got to 16 attack, I think.

Then there's also the ability to replace a card per turn, you can sort of draw 3 cards a turn, which is great.

The card draw speed compared to hand size cap makes having too many cards a more common issue than the lack of cards for some factions (Songhai always thirsty for more cards). When at the end of a round, if you have 5 cards on hand, or even 6 if you played a card with drawing effect, you can only really rely on card replacing to get something that solves your current predicament. I'd rather end a round with 1-4 card on hand in order to get the most out of my draws.

There isn't quite "milling" like in Hearthstone, but overdraw can be a problem

Having a small hand is a problem, to extent. It also encourages to not holding to cards too much and not to build decks, squads where you have a lot of high cost cards that you can't use until much later. However, having maximum of 3 cards in a hand is scary, if you think about it from regular CCG/TCG. I wasn't paying much attention but I've overdrawn a few times when I've started playing. There was no indication that I've lost cards (or was there), so I didn't immediately notice it.

Playing a bit now. Gotta say it could be interesting and grow into better gameplay than Hearthstone, but visually it's kind of a mess. The UI is all over the show and small sprites on the big screen do nothing for clarity. It's okay on a PC screen but if it ends up on consoles or mobile I can't see it being received well. Don't get me wrong, the sprites are beautiful but the size and placement hurt. Obviously designed for iPad too, which is probably where it would look it's best.

I downloaded the client because it was running much too slow in the browser for me. Is there anyway to put it in windowed mode?

On PC, press CTRL + SHIFT + F

On Mac press CTRL + CMD + F to toggle windowed mode.

It is borderless window and can change window size.

Oh dear, despite playing against my newbie friend with basic decks, I have still managed to be a bit mean...

... 5 wraithlings surrounding him, then cast 2x Shoulshatter Pact. His general drops from 24 to 0 HP in an instant.

At first I think I that I am not going to climb this season but new Sunriser restore my interest in ranked mode again.

So, I make new deck for him and here the deck that help me achieve it to rank 0 !
13 Basic, 12 Common, 3 Rare, 9 Epic, 2 Legendary

I really enjoy playing this deck. I really like it when I'm very low and then Elixir + Elixir + Rejuvenator :)

BOOM!

First time surviving through the gauntlet, 9-1, using Vanar of all things. The reward is pretty ridiculous, I got like 2 extra gauntlet runs with it.

That artifact minion was a great boon when I managed to draft 3 Snowpiercers. Mid-to-late game, my attack value was rarely below 8

This is interesting, but I really suck at it.
Don't worry, on online matches I lost like 80-85% of the time until something clicked and I actually started rising in ranks. You might have to learn the annoying units and comboes of each faction the hard way before you can start playing well
