Congrats Mr. Ashley.

Because the list is by alphabetical order it comes up as #2.

What They Play's podcast is also on there.

Well deserved. They are more like radio show specials than a standard podcast. Very high quality.

I saw the thread title and thought to myself 'well deserved', but now that everyone else has already said it, it would be awkward for me to repeat it.

Congrats.

I actually bought some merch from the ALWW site, that's how much I like it. Props to Robert.

Congratulations to Robert for the recognition. Hopefully this gets the podcast in the waiting ears of a few more people.

And thumb up to Apple for not picking a podcast based only on subscription numbers :)

The fact that the What They Play cast is also up there makes me skeptical of the whole thing.

But congrats if it actually is a big deal.

It's less a measure of quality (obviously, with the variety out there) than a curated collection. They basically canonized it for the general audience.

Tell me if you think this praise is undue. But I think things like Life Well Wasted further the acceptance of videogames as a real medium.

Lot of parents buy games for their kids. IGN bought the site. How can you think it's not huge? Because GAF doesn't listen?

I honestly don't think so. http://www.vanityfair.com/culture/features/2009/12/aughties-nostalgia-200912

"6. Gamer Culture
Behold the emergence of Red Bull–quaffing World of Warcraft players, shut-in Second Lifers, and Halo die-hards. The sheer unbridled geekery of gamer culture, where sophisticated graphics and motion-capture interfaces created a dazzling alternative to boring ol’ human existence, matured into a nationwide obsession, hastened by user-friendly innovations such as Wii Bowling or Guitar Hero, the latter of which allowed a generation of tipsy Uncle Bobs to unleash their inner Jimmy Page, to the quiet discomfort of all."

People already know that gamer culture exists (The King Of Kong would be another example), but Robert profiles it rather than making an argument for it. I think it makes for a better, more inviting show, but it certainly won't change minds about the quality of the object of attention.

I like comic strips and comics generally, but find the most commercial stuff worldwide (which would include superhero comics) irritating more than intriguing. I listen to Quiet Panelologists At Work and Funnybook Babylon all the time, though, because they're inviting, funny, intelligent shows. My disposition toward superhero comics hasn't changed.

Well I never said he was making an argument for or against anything. I feel that the effect is an indirect one. I agree that by profiling it the show is more inviting but you're own anecdote doesn't really apply when the general person is in a state of misinformed apathy rather than straight up dislike and irritation.

I think you misunderstand my point though. Game is still a young medium, despite all the money, global marketing campaigns, Nintendo and NY Times pieces on Beatles Rock Band there is still this lingering feeling that people don't take game as serious as other media. I think that ALWW would be something that opens their eyes that this is precisely because of the people it has spawned when Robert profiles them.

Anyway sort of a different argument for a different thread.

It made the Canadian list too, but it wasn't alphabetical order on that one.

Still, it's a terrific show and all praise is well deserved.

It's a pretty direct copy of This American Life but the music and production are amazing and it's often more interesting than TAL

congrats

Not really, it's more like a love child between TAL and RadioLab

Pretty awesome and totally deserved, although I'm not sure being listed next to Adam Carolla is really much of an honor.
