Yesterday I saw the first of the Dark Final Fantasy VII Souls gameplay and was so disappointed. I went for a run to clear my mind- and didn't think about it all until this morning, seeing this thread again.

My ATB dream is dead. Long live the new flesh. :( I'm out!

The FFXV battle system can suck a fuck.

It's less action that Dissidia or even final Fantasy. Of the psuedo-action game play styles they said it lends itself to be more about ATB than the others.
 
continuing my analysis of combat based on recent remarks.

So the filling up to super bar seems to indeed be an ATB bar based on the comments.

What I'm figuring is then:
Attack repeatedly (we see them doing this by mashing X on the attack button each time it turns blue.)
When bar fills unleash finisher
Bar then cools down to start again.

I'm guessing it will be a short cool down due to the repeated use of the word action by the developers, and the fact that your allies are AI controlled.

Things we do not see:
Selecting the finisher. Is this preset like limit breaks in the original? Since there is a separate limit break bar which old limits will be limits instead of finishers?
Selecting magic. Will magic be able to be weaved with attacks, or would it take one full round of the bar.
Selecting summons. same question as magic, could summons be differentiated by consuming the entire atb bar?
Movement. We never see any clearly controlled movement in the trailer. The only actual combat movement is barret shooting while moving, but this doesnt look player controlled.

The only thing we ever really see is the loop I listed first, but without the ATB cooldown possibility that I inferred from the dev comments. We do see the command list greying out between attacks, so we can safely assume control being taken away while each attack completes. This would mean that cancelling into defense would be out.

overall how this plays is still completely up in the air, pretty shit way to demo gameplay
 
I can't possibly catch-up with a 92 page thread so sorry if that idea was already mentioned but with regards to the battle system, I wouldn't dismiss ATB so quickly based on the UI. My take is that the battle-system is Hybrid ATB, similar to how Megaman Battle Network functions.

When you fight all you can do are normal attacks and nothing else which fills up your ATB gauge. Then as it is full you may issue one advanced command as in using items, limits, summons, magic etc. then after that was done you're back to normal attacks and then you wait till the next "turn" begins.

In Megaman Battle Network it's similar, you can always control Megaman and use his Megabuster to do damage, however to do more advanced stuff you have to wait for the custom gauge at the top of the screen to fill to use advanced commands. So turn based combat fans might still get their fill, if Square really did it like that it's actually genius I think!

I'm on board with pretty much every change detailed so far. It remains to be seen how the overworld is going to function, but most of the changes they're implementing seem to make a lot of sense.

This is nothing like the FFXV battle system.

Heck, we don't even know how that plays now and won't until March.

I get really freaked out by the submarine stuff in GTAV. I keep imagining some massive creature emerging from the depths. I'm not sure how I'll handled it when one actually does and it's a weapon.

Someone with his attitude will probably hate whatever the battles are. No it's not 1990s ATB. If that's the measure of success, this won't do it for him.

I think there will be more than 3 parts, and we're looking at more of a 2020-2021 time frame for completion.

Volume 3 is huge, they'd need to cut some things to make it fit in 20 hours.

Midgar doesn't actually have that much to it. Way less than Kalm to the City of the Ancients.

You're talking about 4-6 hours compared to 15-18 hours.

IIRC the average Time to beat the game back in the day was roughly 55 hours.

In an interview they talked about expanding Midgar, letting us go to parts we never got to in the original VII. I won't be surprised if they make Midgar the largest FF city in terms of areas to go through.

They also talked about things that will have to be cut out, and don't tell me Honey Bee in isn't first on that list.

You're right though, they're going to make Midgar bigger, and that's great. I still can't imagine it'll be big enough to have a full dedicated episode to itself.

Random thought but it would be nice if the Battle Arena in Gold Saucer had an online multiplayer aspect to it. Where a group of three friends each control a character.

I understand that it's a huge game, and they want to fit everything in... but why sell us three (at best) parts?
Damn, just publish it as a full multi-blu ray disc game (talk about nostalgia!) in 2018.

HAHAHA that is why they are doing this, because there is no way in hell it will all release by 2018.

More like part 1 spring/summer 2017 at the earliest then 8 to 15 months for each chapter afterwards.

I just saw the trailer again. Instead of filling me with awe, it now fills me with sadness. The whole day was shitty because of this news, and I read it yesterday... I don't think any game has ever affected my emotional level this much. Why Square. Why. :(
