NPD Sales Results for November 2015 [Up3: Combined Hardware For PS4 + XB1 + Wii U]

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Yet another harsh reminder that Microsoft money is just never worth it in the longrun.

That's not how it works.

Tomb Raider tanked because it had the worse release date, possible literally. Any game launching on the same day as Fallout 4 was going to get killed. Not just that but it is a tight window with the new COD, Assassins Creed, etc.

Whoever came up with that Tomb Raider date deserves to get fired. It is that bad of a glaring mistake.

Yeah Type-0 HD was just over 200K at launch.

It was March (like Tomb Raider 2013's #2) ,not the incomparably competitive November, but for reference.

10.) Final Fantasy: Type 0 HD (PS4, Xbox One)

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1030552

Final Fantasy Type-0 HD, a full price PSP remaster on PS4 and Xbox One, may have outsold Rise of the Tomb Raider in the US on Xbox One and 360 if ZhugeEX isn't misleading.

I liked Type-0 HD but this is a shocker. I wasn't expecting this bad for Tomb Raider after 2013, Xbox only or not.

And Wii U continues to be as relevant as a flip phone :( But still managed an ok this month number so there's that.

Did anyone really think Tomb Raider would chart given its only on Xbox and up against holiday sales where many multiplats find huge success?

Well, Tomb Raider was amazing - can't wait for it to get more sales on other platforms. Exclusivity doesn't seem to work well like that, I mean I'm guilty because I bought an XBO for the damn game. But it's sad that it didn't chart on a wider scale!

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Not too shocked. Despite people saying this month was stacked, there weren't all that many new games. Just a few selling humongous amounts. Besides the usual COD/sports/AC the new stuff was basically just Fallout, Battlefront, and Halo. Plus Nintendo having nothing this year. Bigger sales being concentrated on fewer titles.

Well, I wouldn't say this month was so avid of releases, but it's definitely true that Nintendo was really, really down this year compared to the past Novembers, basically no major releases at all. That surely was a major contributor to sales going down outside of the big 3.

Hmm, all of that Call of Duty promotion and PS4 wasn't even the top selling platform for the game.

Intriguing.

There used to be huge gap between Xbox and PS versions of COD. I don't think Xbox version still being ahead even after promotion deal is that surprising (not to mention NPD doesn't count bundles). Gap should be smaller than ever though.

If Tomb Raider sold less than 200K imagine how bad that platinum exclusive for xbone is gonna sell. Do they even make bombs that big?

It's unlikely to ever get a sequel anyway, unless it's a mega success, and so long as the game comes out I'm gonna be content. Platinum also doesn't own the IP so they couldn't even take it anywhere else if they wanted.

In the madness, the monthly ranking on Amazon was updated for December:

#3: PS4 BF bundle
#12: PS4 UC bundle
#15: WiiU Mario Kart 8 bundle
#32: XB1 GeoW bundle

Not sure it's completely fixed yet, but that's where we're at for now.

How does it work? I would argue that Uncharted is a more popular series these days when compared to Halo. The Masterchief Collection and Halo 4 put a big cloud over the brand. It will sell more no matter what.

You can make the argument but we have nothing to go on until Uncharted 4 comes out.

PS2 being number one had best selling FPS games that didin't come near Halo 1 and 2.

We don't know how many COD bundles sold though. Not surprising that Xbox still sold more, but I doubt it was as much of a blowout as usual. Xbox is still home of shooters, although unfortunately, it looks like Sony is trying to change that.

I was hoping to see the image of the terrible ROTR collectors edition figurine which has a sad Lara face :(

Thread disappoints.

Something like

PS4 ~1.55m
XB1 ~1.25m
WIU ~0.25m

Doesn't sound too far fetched, that is assuming that XB1 and WIU aren't too far away from last years results and that WIU isn't being overestimated.

1.23 million according to the OP, not shabby at all
True but that's almost exactly the same as last year. Which basically proves there's nothing they can do to compete w/ PS4 to the point of getting equal market share in NA, let alone more marketshare.

Would not actually be surprised if that number retracts next year :/

Agreed about the timing but what was the bad deal? I don't think the exclusivity in and of itself is the problem, so what about the deal was bad? Surely it would have sold better on both platforms but it still would not have charted.

Even if it doesn't necessarily chart, that's not everything. Simply doing better is healthy for building the brand. As well,

1. Two markets much bigger than the XB1 market are completely cut off at launch (PC and PS4), and these markets contain a great number of people who enjoyed the previous Tomb Raider game. As well, many have regarded TR as a "Playstation franchise".

2. By the time the game finally hits the other platforms, people will likely have moved onto the next big thing. Uncharted 4 will have been out for months on PS4, and stuff like Horizon will be out that holiday. Its mindshare will have dropped greatly following the end of its big marketing push this year. Their only real options are cutting their losses and making it a budget release, or putting it out again as a $60 title -- and I'm not so sure people will be willing to pay that much for something not quite a shiny and new.

The deal was likely made when they were less sure of how well the XB1 and PS4 would do relative to one another so I figure what happened is SE thought they'd play it safe and take the upfront exclusitivity money for the short term. But in the long-term, it's going to be healthier for any title to be released on as many platforms as possible, which is something we've seen be more and more common in recent times, with most of the biggest games being multiplats and exclusives being thought of as "cool bonuses".
