Probably the best possible outcome. They're good but not good enough to completely clash against the backgrounds.

Between the contrast bump killing detail, and the oily filter in place, that's a hideous upscale job on the background. Nevermind cutting off part of the image to fit the picture into widescreen.

game logic is probably tied to it or something, it's an ancient game.

Well of course but surely there's a way to fix that now.

Those were just contributing factors. I dislike the fact that the entire game was engineered to be some sort of nostalgia dive with lots of hurr-hurr references to "classic" FF. Strip all of that away, and the actual story and characters in the game are really shallow and the narrative is pretty nonsensical and lacks a strong theme. I love a ton of scenes in FFIX, but as an overall product I disliked it more and more as time went by.

This is what I think of IX's story and characters. There's not a whole lot to them. I was surprised how little there was to Zidane and Garnet's romance compared to other RPGs. After a certain point, they barely interact.

Finally! And a high speed function is too perfect along autosave. And I wonder what those game boosting features are.

2015 is in its last day but the year of dreams is still delivering. What a year.

I really doubt it, but I hope Square uses the high-res background art.

Never mind hoping. Everyone should just spam their social media accounts and public relations managers with emails containing those pictures and links to that thread.

This is incredible news. I thought this would never happen. Seriously, I'm floored. Bring on more FFIX!

Nice, I will pick it up for iPad if some of the glacial pacing issues are addressed.

Seriously, what game started the trend that nearly every PS1 RPG had to be hostile towards the player's time?

AH. High Speed Mode. BOUGHT.

Is it really too much work to remake all the backgrounds? I mean, it's just 2D backgrounds.

Cue Square going "oh shit our internal work is leaking onto the internet" and scrubbing all the locations where the images can be found.

Has a game ever needed a speed mode more than this one?

Fucking Godly announcement. Year of Dreams is complete, certainly makes up for no XII.

I dare you to make a picture of castle on MS Paint that fits your monitor screen. Then you'll only begin to grasp how difficult art asset creation is and how everyone seems to take it for granted.

The cropping is a concern. I hope there an option to play it in its original aspect ratio (but probably won't be because there's no way they're including two versions of each FMV).

Looking at the released stuff so far, I'm glad that they are adding some polys to the models. But the backgrounds, yikes. I guess there isn't much they can do about those, but it's a shame all the same.

I think that's exactly what they are going to do.

Could someone point me to one of those people who kept saying "It's impossible, they can't port FFIX to PC's/current gen consoles". I would like to see what they have to say about this.

(Hopefully Red Dead is the next one to come, then my inner geek will be complete).

I think you underestimate how much time and money it takes to create high resolution animated background images. It would be much easier if they were just full 3D backgrounds.

Exactly what I thought they were '-.-. My bad

Man, looked at the "updated" graphics and they are cutting off top/bottom of the image, and the colors look... off.

Are the only people in SE capable of actually updating graphics properly no longer working there after X/X-2 port? That had some weird faces but at least everything else was better. Or does SE no longer have decent 2D artists?

I will still probably buy it on PC but hopefully these are not final. Otherwise it's better to just stick with the emulator. No longer excited.

Oh god that looks terrible. Why, Square? Why? You were so close to not fucking this up, but instead you put in extra effort just to fuck it up when you could have left it alone.

remember when ps1 cg looked awesome

nothing from that era has survived the passage of time
It'd look a lot better if they presented it 'honestly' without filtering the SHIT out of it.

It's really depressing how poorly so many remasters are handled.

More precisely, the backgrounds were 2D renders of 3D models that were then matte-painted by movie artists (they used the same people that worked on the FF movie).

Yep, that sounds like a lot of work.

Screenshots are 4:3 pillarboxed. 16:9 seems like a trailer thing.

Also VI got de-filtered in record time on Steam, so hurrah.

Hopefully no achievement for getting Excalibur II lol.

PLZ NO

Yeah, I never bothered getting Excalibur II. Rushing to play the game isn't fun. Final Fantasy IX is a game you take your time with to properly enjoy the story and not to mention isn't needed at all for Steiner to do max damage.

Am I the only one who's upset that none of these updated ports will ever be seen on the Vita :(

I constantly play the classics, infact I originally bought the Vita as a Final Fantasy machine and have almost every FF on it (although I'm not a big fan of 12 it's still worth a playthrough)

Real shame.
