Oculus Rift available for preorder for $599.99, shipping in March

Vive has to 999.99 I would believe. O.R. just set the bar. My guess would be PSVR 499, Vive 999, OR now confirmed 599.

It is quite expensive. If I can get the damn store to load I'll preorder one and think about keeping it or not over the next month.

Why would Vive cost that much more?

I think at this price it will sell modestly but not explode in popularity (yet). PSVR would be wise to price below this. What are people thinking that will be? $350?

Yeah VR is going to remain niche for a while. I'm still hoping for a social alternative, though that will likely have to wait a while for the computer to fit inside the headset so that everybody can have one.

Whelp, g'luck with ithat Oculus, way to price yourselves right out of the mainstream.

Incredibly stupid price imo.

VR needs an install base in order to actually stick around and become a "thing" lest it end up becoming a "fad" like it was in the late 80's/early 90's and then went away.

Facebook with it's deep pockets should have been smart enough to realize this and should have eaten some of the price in order to attract a good instlal base, 300'iiiish price would hjave been a sweet spot where many mainsitream people would have got it and led to early adoption.

This price tag is a good way to make sure it stays a niche product.

Definitely waiting on the Vive now.

No discount at all for DK2 owners? That's kind of bullshit. Was hoping for 100-200 off. Guess I'll just go Playstation VR instead.

what's with the "rip vr" comments? this was always going to be niche just because of the system requirements, it'll sell well with an audience that's less price sensitive.

vr was never going to go mainstream until a few years down the line when mid-range computers are better and they've driven down the headset cost.

Wow, I guess I was way too optimistic with my guess earlier this morning. As someone with no current interest in VR, this seems way to steep to me to be a breakout hit.

The ball is now in Sony and HTC/Valve's court. I now expect PSVR to be significantly less (~$400), and I wouldn't be surprised if the Rift comes in cheaper as well.

Preorder numbers and initial sales will be very interesting to watch.

I mean, if you own a controller already and don't care about the games, you can probably sell all the bundle and controller and get back around $100.

You'll be charged when your order ships.
Tax: $49.42
Shipping: $32.47
Estimated Total: $680.89

Seeing Palmer say that pre-orders wouldn't be charged until shipping totally changed my mind. And I was going to pre-order one.

Then I realized I was about to buy an untested first-gen piece of hardware from a company with no track record that includes 2 games with no reviews. For $600.

So I stopped. Thank common sense!

You mean third gen piece of hardware?

first edition tech is always expensive - they will sell to the hardest of hardcore and hope to bring the price down 2nd or 3rd edition in the years to come. By then I may know what exactly the point of it is. I get immersed reading a good novel or watching a good film and after the Wii I am not up for gaming standing up so yeah I'll wait and see how it shakes out.

Well...Looks like PSVR has a chance to lock this down.

I think expectations that PSVR will be far below this are a little much. Considering everything they are having to bundle with it the price will be very high even though it is aiming for a lower spec market. I'm calling a floor of $400 with an expectation of $500.

Expected, but was hoping they'd manage $500. Sony to compete with a Ps4 VR bundle priced a hundred less, me thinks.

What price did you expect? Any less than $400 would have been daft.

it's the price i expected, just not the price i'm willing to pay. i understand it's a new, improved piece of finalized (hopefully) kit with some pack-ins, but 2x the price of the DK2 is just nuts.

FUCK. That's a pretty expensive start for VR.

But Sony could do their hero thing again and announce PSVR for $299.
