Shoutime over on his Tumblr blog has apparently found something quite peculiar - an apparent unreleased Sonic arcade game called Segasonic Bros.

The guy previously helped find and dump roms, such as the Sonic Popcorn Machine and Wakuwaku Sonic Patrol Car, so it's seemingly legit.

This game was designed by the creator of Bubble Bobble, Fukio Mitsuji, this went to location test and failed. According to HG101 the game might have been a prototype (or variant) of the game Popils too.

No gameplay just yet.

Been keeping my eye on this. Hopefully gameplay footage or at least screenshots will be forthcoming.

Sonic's arcade legacy is littered with the obscure, forgotten, and occasionally unreleased.

Shoutime's collection is legit, his tumblr is amazing.

He does collect bootlegs/hacks as well though, I was pretty skeptical when he posted that first screenshot.

Is this by the same man who doesn't dump?
Considering he dumped Waku Waku Sonic Patrol Car and that Sonic Popcorn Machine thing, I want to say no.

But then, that thread is about Waku Waku Sonic Patrol Car, so I can't say.

Either way, he's implied he'll be dumping this one. (And to anyone who's gonna pester him about it: don't!)

Shou recently dumped a nearly-lost Taito arcade game called Vertexer, which is getting fitted for MAME playback and due to be released soon. I really doubt we have any dirt on this guy, and I'm sure SegaSonic Bros. will be distributed in one context or another.

What's the source on Mitsuki designing this? I'm talking an exact source, not just speculation.

It's cool that we are still finding retro games.

Not the same person. The guy who was raising money to get the cabinet is someone else.

Also yeah, try not to message the guy, apparently others have already harassed him about this.

This seems like it's based on NES' Mario Bros? Especially with VS mode. Unless it's VS mode like that in Sonic 3, and this was the first version of that VS mode before it got a console release under Sonic 3.

It I had to guess its probably a very early prototype of the 3-player co-op Sonic game that came out in arcades in 1993, which never got a release in the US (or at least a very limited one).

The other two characters in that game (Ray and Mighty) are exactly the same as Sonic in terms of abilities and attributes so they might as well be recolors.

Gives all the fucks
First screenshot makes me think of Sega Sonic The Hedgehog with the trackball. Any word on getting some gameplay footage?

Amazing this was discovered after all these years. Can't wait to learn more about it.

If a real thing...

Not that pairing a blue character with red and yellow ones is that creative, but it does line up very directly.

Honestly, the Sonic fandom is so filled with people trying to 1up each other on fakes that I'm not sure I trust any "long lost prototype" news anymore, just out of reflex. At least HG101 piping up about it is helpful.

If it's shou, he probably has a PCB of the game. I don't know if the sonic fandom is that crazy.

Weird that both a game about Sonic's brothers and a game about Sonic's sister got canceled. Sonic's siblings will just have to remain unknown...

On one hand you are absolutely correct about Ray and Mighty being possibly polished recolors, and the title matches, but... on the other hand the trackball arcade game... does NOT sound like this with half of its premise being the trackball. Well, we'll see.

I've always found it very curious that despite Sega being an arcade powerhouse, there really not much Sonic arcade stuff that's of any big significance.

It doesn't come from Sonic Retro, I can tell you that much.

I'm only joking.

Mostly.

I can still see someone huddled in a room, "Okay, I'm going to leak info about it first, plant it on a few web pages, then code my own game in Assembly, then burn it to chips, age the board appropriately, mail it to a Japanese proxy who'll then list it on an auction site..."

EMAIL=i'mma slap y'all if you bring up sonic underground/EMAIL

No fair hiding commentary in an Email tag. I had it already rehosted on Imgur and everything.

Because it's probably just an unlabeled pcb. Just wait for footage or a rom dump before calling hoax.

He shows other stuff that's not important or very interesting, even an unlabeled pcb would be more interesting to see than what's in these pics:

So again, why not show what it's running off of? I'm sure that's interesting even if it's blank.

And for someone who loves his CRTs, why is he using an LCD monitor? (notice there's no curvature on the sides in the Sonic pics)

I'm calling it a hoax. A guy like this doesn't post pics of a screen with an undiscovered sonic game without showing the minutiae he got with it.

again, the guy has a long history of dumping rare and unknown games for MAME. These includes:

-Wing Force
-Segasonic Popcorn Shop
-Galaxy Force (as in, the original version of Galaxy Force II)

among others.

asserting he's a fraud because one of his blog posts shows he play games on a LCD(?) is laughable.

Btw does anyone remember that Sonic Dimensions rumor where you would play as 6 differently colored Sonics with different abilities? Because that sounded dope as fuck.

Why would a guy this respected suddenly decide to do a hoax like this?

So I guess you missed the part where this guy has dumped rare/unreleased arcade games before? Or does him showing the games on an LCD screen instead of a CRT negate that?

It's not a hoax guy, Shou is a PCB collector in Japan, he owns 1619~ arcade games and is very serious about collecting.

Fine, I'll bring up his sister from a manga series instead:

They should remake Sonic Underground and have it be the new main canon.
Not even joking. Better than AOSTH, SATAM, Sonic X, or Sonic Boom.

If they do what TimmiT suggests and have Crush 40 make every song, would be open to this despite hating the original cartoon :).

The idea was sound but.....I hated this when I was growing up X(. Felt far weaker compared to AoStH and SATAM honestly :l.

Because he's not doing it to be a dick, he's doing it because he's having fun? I don't know a lot about the Sonic scene, but a previous poster says hoaxes are common and are almost like a contest to see who can outdo the other. Ever read the AtariAge thread with the BioForce Ape hoax? It's hilarious!!

I made a hoaxed game too. It's a fun little project to do.

A NEW CHINESE POKEMON BOOTLEG??? (Plug & Play update!!)

How to hoax a Pokemon bootleg... :D

One of us will be right in the end, maybe I'll be wrong but I have my reasons for thinking it's a hoax. Maybe the game is real, but it's an unofficial knockoff? I see a game that looks like it's part of Chinese pachinko machine at best.

Since when has Sega made Sonic games that have "Sega" in the title? So far they've only done it with sports games.

YOUR TAG. ITS KILLING ME!! I can't believe No one responded to it in that thread!!

ahhh, yes, my scarlet letter... I was so happy the day I got it!

Shou isn't some random "Sonic fan". He's a widely known PCB collector. He has credibility, I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt here.
