You get cards from opening chests or you can buy them with gold if they're available in the store (typically one common, one rare and one epic are available in the store).

How pay to win is Clash Royale? I generally have distain for devs like Supercell and King, but this one does look like fun.

I don't think it's really pay to win and it's Supercell's least offensive business model yet. I absolutely dislike everything they've done until now but this is pretty fun. Oh and I've been playing it for 2 months now.

we'll find out in a few days when the grind picks up. at first it seems fun and free, but i know it's too early to make a call/

Cool. I'll give it a shot.

A person who buys chests and cards will definitely have the upper hand against someone who doesn't, since his cards will be at higher levels. But I think the matchmaking is geared towards trophies and player levels, so these people will probably not be matched against each other unless there are no other good matches in the queue.

There are some exceptions I can think of though. Like a whale starting on arena 1: he'll probably not have any good matches at all, so he'll play against lower leveled players until he gets to higher arenas. Or when you as a f2p player gets to higher arenas: there'll probably be a lot more higher leveled players there, both through the fact they've played longer and/or they've paid more. But note that cards have max levels, so even as a f2p player you'll eventually catch up.

Also, in the end skill still matters more than anything else. So a more skilled lower leveled player will easily crush a less skilled higher level one.

Peter Panic is pretty freaking adorable. It's a proper Wario Ware-like with a musical theme. The whole thing is super, super silly, but a lot of fun.

Even if you despise musicals, give it a shot. It's a great little time waster. F2P with a $2.99 purchase to unlock the ability to save your progress (so basically shareware).

Also, holy hell at Lost Socks. Brutal game, but awesome.

I've been enjoying Thumb Drift a lot since it came out. It's a simple high score game that quickly becomes impossibly hard and relies on coin grinding for cosmetic unlocks a la Crossy Road, but the main mechanic of drifting is super fun. I wouldn't mind an actual racer that controlled that way.

I've just played a few games of TCW but it seems solid so far. I like the addition of earning stars for each train that you don't stop. The "build your own rail network" aspect is interesting as well but I've yet to see if it's just a disguised linear way to unlock new levels.

I hope that they kept the night mode from TC2. That was an even faster paced arcade mode. :D

Puzzle Retreat looks interesting. I'll be checking that out too.
The rail network does seem like a fun by annoying freemium mechanic. The pieces you get are random, so to get to the next city, you need to grind and do challenges till you get enough of the needed pieces or buy track tile packs

I'll be honest, while I love the visuals I'm just not feeling lost socks. Over an hour in and I still find myself wrestling with the controls where I'll be hitting the wrong button. I also don't like the predictable gameplay that seems to be in all auto runners; jump at this point, shoot at this, use your heavy on these grouped up guys, dash to survive this. To be fair though auto runners have never been my favorite genre on mobile so maybe I'm the wrong person to ask for a fair opinion.

Really enjoying Templar Battleforce RPG. Warhammer Deathwatch might have the graphics and atmosphere, but in terms of pure design, Templar Battleforce is quite a few notches ahead.

Honestly, I've been opening chests and collecting cards out of habit more than I've actually played Clash Royale. The strategy seems very light, at least in the opening arena and first set of cards. Maybe (hopefully) that changes.

What is the Clash Royale clan?

Here's a basic beginner's guide:

Elixir advantage is probably the most important concept. Deck synergies and placement strategies are also good to know about.

Clash Royale is certainly fun. Every time I encounter a new unit I find them op, tho. Btw, if you plan to spend less than $1k or go f2p, it's better to buy 50,000 gold over chests, and just get the daily epics.

Which makes it good that no people in arena 1 can get to arena 2+ cards (and so on), which makes it equal for everyone. Also, if you check out Royale TV matches, you can see many of the top players still playing training ground and arena 1 cards.

It's a fun game and will make millions per day, ok but I find the exposure in the AppStore for Clash Royale a bit excessive.

Especially a whole row of banners with in game characters that I hope won't take away space to the other games of the week.

Just a heads up.... The neogaf clan in clash royale is filling up quickly. If it is your thing I would recommend acting quickly before it is full . There are only 13 spots open as of now.

Requested to join the NeoGAF clan. I'm Olaffle on there.

I don't really enjoy the F2P timers for the chests. I wish it still had some major sense of progress even while the timers were going. Like if multiple chest timers could go at once versus one at a time.

Hey I had no idea there was a Galaxy on Fire game exclusive to Apple TV. How is the game?

Shame they are turning GoF3 a f2p MMO...

"Meh"

Most of the original GoF 1-2 devs are no longer at Fishlabs, and it shows.

I think that TV game is just a tiny side project.

They are working on a full Galaxy on Fire 3 (or whatever they're calling it). It's supposed to be huge and like an MMO. From what I've read it will be a much bigger and deeper game than the first two GoF games.

So I wouldn't give up on Fishlabs. I just don't think they put much effort into the Apple TV game.

Wow, really good games I downloaded yesterday.

Clash Royale, Train Conductor World and Peter Panic.

I've been trying to get to level 3 in Clash Royale so I can join the clan, but it's taking longer that I wanted. :(

So the Clash Royale clan is now full. Really wish the limit wasn't 50.

For those already in the clan: because we don't get a "last login" date, I'm going to be monitoring donations (which reset weekly) and chat. Anyone who doesn't donate and I don't see active in chat will likely get a boot.

For those not already in the clan, we'll try to post here (or in an eventual OT) when we clear space so people can apply with a codeword so we know they're legit.

Just got an ipad pro (for work/sketching/games/etc)... my god this thing is gorgeous.

Any big iPad Pro gaming suggestions? Already got Hearthstone and Fallout Shelter on it. How are the Final Fantasy games on this thing?

I'm really getting into Train Conductor World (future career prospect perhaps?) The grind to get the right track parts can be a little frustrating at times but the game itself is this lovely pacey guide-em-up. I must admit, it does sometimes feel that to ace a level (complete it without collisions and braking any trains) can be ruined by a stroke of bad luck with the train placement but given how quick the levels/retries actually are then it is never too annoying with that.

So, here's something GAF might like -

Peter Panic just came out - it's a micro-game musical adventure for your pocket. (Free, one $2.99 purchase to unlock saving.) Developed by James Marion and published by Adult Swim Games. The initial release is Act 1. Act 2 will feature content contributions from Swery! And...he made an amazing... video as well singing the praises of the game.

Also, Act 1 has contributions or features Dave Lang, Rami Ismail, Grant Kirkhope, Bennet Foddy and a bunch of broadway talent too.

Hey, Pitta, are you anticipating No Man's Sky (PC/PS4)? The new previews today, it's like a full fledged 3D Out There, right down to the different races
One neat touch, however, is that they'll all speak different languages, and you'll gradually pick up on the meaning of words by exploring their planets; fail to take the time to pick up on the local lingo, however, and you'll find communication more difficult. This can be particularly problematic in trading scenarios, where picking the wrong option due to a misunderstanding may find you on the receiving end of a blaster to the rear.

Yeah looks awesome.

For some reason (it's just me, but believe me I tried) I can't enjoy anything gamey on console/PC/fixed position anymore (after more than 35 years of being a hard core PC addict...I'm a bit old :p)...so I'll try it but I know I won't complete it/really play it.
But yes, looks awesome.
Kudos to Sony to have sponsored this far an indie dev (if I read the stories well back in the days).

EDIT: About this it's been some months I'm considering a 'Steam server' just to play with Moonlight.
I never understood why Apple didn't make a pact with Sony or MS to let in house game streaming between consoles and iPads (not everyone likes games that require a controller, like FPS etc...).
They should do a bundle iPhone+Steam Machine'
