Salt and Sanctuary |OT| Salt for the Soul

Ok, first boss down - it does kind of annoy me how movement is mapped to the joystick instead of the d-pad and that there's no way of changing that, but I should adapt over time. I'm also sort of feeling like evasion doesn't really work as well on a 2D plane as it does in 3D, but again it's probably just teething issues.

Dang, really? I was on the fence but I think that might be the final straw. Can't stand using sticks for 2d stuff.

Yeah, the d-pad is used for changing items and something else that I haven't tried yet. It just feels like it's not quite as responsive as it would be if movement was on the d-pad.

RE wishing L2/R2 were on L1/R1 instead you could go into the PS4 accessibility options and temporarily switch those button assignments across the whole system.

I've done it for other games for varying reasons and it works great.

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
First game breaking bug, only less than an hour in

A wolf "threw" me into the wall and I got into another room, now I'm stuck in the wall and can't get out.

This is why you beta test your game when you're a team of 2 people.

Loving it so far.

People weren't kidding when they said this was almost an exact copy of the Souls games mechanics.

Well, you beta test your game regardless of your team size, but I digress. I remember Ska studios giving Alpha access at least 8 months ago to certain people (like A German Spy), so it must've had a few months of beta since. I know one of the Zeboyd Games guys has had access to the beta for awhile now.

I am about to finish the game (played around 18 hours or so i believe) and that bug occurred only once and apart from that one, there were no bugs at all. Frame-rate and performance of the game is pretty perfect too. From a techinacal perspective you could say the game is flawless.

Haven't various people been playing this on PC for months now? I'm sure it's been tested plenty but like you said, it's two people.

All games have bugs, doesn't mean they weren't properly tested or had poor QA. No need to make dickish comments about the devs.

I'm a little disappointed it won't have cross save. I hope that's patched in when the Vita version releases.

are there co op trophies in this?

the reason i ask is since its local co op only and i dont personally know any other vita owners where i live

3 mins to decide what I'll run with. I love collecting weapons I can use. But magic is goddamn nice too.

No. Trophy list is pretty similar to Dark Souls (as is just about everything in the game :p). Though overall I think the list is a bit easier. Mostly just beating each boss, joining each Creed, etc.

Working on my review now so I'll just throw some short impressions in. Finished the game once, have another character at the final boss, and have two characters sitting a couple bosses in.

  • I'm pretty experienced with the Souls games as this point and thus have found this to be a bit easier. It can still be quite challenging, but I don't think I ever felt like it became unfair. Maybe in one or two spots, but nothing too bad.
  • I like the art direction for the most part....I just wish there weren't as many super dark areas.
  • Almost everything about the game is taken straight from Dark Souls. Some name changes: Souls -> Salt. Bonfire -> Sanctuary. As a Souls fan? This is a great way to spend my time waiting for Dark Souls 3. Great transition of the Souls genre into 2D. At the same time I think the similarities will turn some people off. I didn't mind it too much, but there are some things later on in the game that felt a bit too close. Would have benefited from trying to change things up a bit.
  • Tree of Skill can be overwhelming at first. I got used to it overtime though and grew to like it.

This game fucking sucks. The hitboxes are awful. The telegraphing is incredibly inconsistent, sometimes huge wind-ups that take eternity and other times instant combos that would have been impossible to see coming. The character movement is terribly broken, like randomly not being able to roll through bosses/enemies for no god damned reason. It's way too easy to get pinned against a wall and then have an enemy infinite you to death, especially thanks to the aforementioned broken as fuck rolling. Difficulty is completely random depending on if the enemies decide to do a really easy attack or a five-string ultra combo thanks to some invisible dice roll.

But hey at least I got to put fun blue hair on my character.

edit: I stand by my first impression but the game does get better if you're more patient.

This is very off topic but I was watching peeve play this game on twitch and noticed his chat is sub only. Is his chat always like this or only since dark souls 3 is coming out and they're avoiding spoilers?

Welp. Guess I need to wait until Eitr to provide a 2D Souls fix. Thanks for the impressions.
That reminds me, I actually had this confused in my head with Death's Gambit. Dunno just how Soulslike that will really be, but it's definitely another I have my eyes on.

Though I guess that just makes this more of a complete surprise, huh?

For what's it worth I enjoyed my time with the game what I played in 45 mins. Went to my first boss fight at level 1 and had to spam my healing items as I'm still in the learning process. But as a thief I was needing to use items at the end. Beat the boss at the end by pure luck.

I won't disagree about the telegraphing entirely at least with the first boss, but it's not like souls didn't have bosses you didn't need to learn their move set after multiple tries or bosses that felt fairly cheap. At one point I had a good rhythm going against the boss.

Game is probably more unforgiving than souls though with the mobs. You'll have zombies jumping down platforms to get to you lol.

I mean, I'm more just venting my frustration with not having enough patience at the moment. I'm sure someone with a lot more tolerance for a game where failure isn't always your fault would be able to appreciate the game.

I'm going to give it another try later because I already feel invested in it, and there are some things in the game I'd like to explore more, but at the moment it's just pissing me off incredibly.

So when the hell does this go up in Australia? Preorder has been down since this morning but can't buy it, at least not through the web store.

I wasn't going to bite but I'm thinking of giving it a go.

I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing with the Skill Tree. I'm feeling so confused right now.

How have I never heard of this...downloading now.

Watched a tiny bit of footage, something that bothers me is the HUD designs in each corner of the screen, makes me think I'm looking at a picture frame or something, is there a way to turn that off? If not, hope the devs make it an option in a update or something.

edit: also, are there any plans to make the co-op online in the future?

After playing the first boss a few times, I can say died mostly due to impatience and not using my Souls experience to watch his moves.

I don't think that boss is all that different from Souls bosses except you have to translate the 3D movement into 2D, and take advantage of having more Y axis ability.

To watch people walk away from getting the game after a single negative impression (or even a couple) is laughable in the context of a Souls like game.
