I think i'm gonna cave in and buy this. Quantum Break and Enter The Gungeon in the same week is too much for me, though.

And only last week we had Hyper Light Drifter and Samorost 3.

Geez.

Absolutely. I'm loving Samorost 3! Beautiful game.

This would be perfect on Vita, any news of that happening?.
They had one of the devs up answering questions during Richard Hammer's stream last night. He said he'd like to get Enter the Gungeon ported to the Vita but they'll need to find an external team to take on that project at some point down the road. So it's not something that's in the cards soon and not something they plan to do themselves... but at least they haven't ruled it out.

Was wild watching Cobalt stream the game for 12 hours on Saturday and fail to complete a single run despite his years of Isaac expertise. Only got as far as the 5th chamber once. I ignored the streams yesterday but I have to imagine they've beaten the game by now at least once or twice.

AAC was Unity engined right? that has great performance, so hopefully the Gungeon devs have managed it.

Looking forward to this!

We've met at a few events and talked performance/gameplay stuff, I'm super excited to see how it turned out as they are a rad bunch of people and they put a lot of care and effort in to this game :)

I was super ego boosted when one of the devs mentioned playing AAC to look at our weapon designs haha. I really think this game is gonna be great.

AAC is a super slick game, can certainly see why someone would look it's way for inspiration.

Fingers crossed the performance is as good as AAC!

I tuned into Richard Hammer's stream a little bit ago, he plays this with a controller and prefers it, so it sounds like the gamepad controls will be up to snuff. Pretty sure he plays Nuclear Throne with m&kb

A dev on the Steam forum said they mainly played the game with a pad. That's their preferred control scheme.

Also, buttons are configurable. Full Xinput and Dinput support.

Wow, yeah I might end up using a pad instead despite there being a cursor with m&kb. We'll see. That's great though.

I finished Hyper Light Drifter after 14 horus, so I can move on from there. An hour into Samorost 3, I know that will take me a while but as it's a relaxing adventure game, I'll keep it in the back burner after intense sessions with Quantum Break and this game.

Still have yet to finish Firewatch, The Witness, and Homeworld Deserts Of Kharak.

Yikes... I was hoping it wasn't going to be a super hard game.

So excited for this. Nuclear Throne needed to be just a bit more like Isaac for me to adore it and this game looks like exactly that.

Also, I hope this is good with a Steam controller.

Been looking forward to this since the footage shown at the PC gaming show last year during E3.

Full of charm

Is this unlocking tomorrow at 11 AM EDT?

Same. Local only is always a no buy for me.

I was really bummed out about this too, but apparently it's just something right now that is too hard to implement for the kind of game they have.

I remember one of the devs detailing a pretty good post about it on the steam discussion forums for the game, but can't find it right now.

I am sorry that we've given you trouble when looking for an answer on this, so I would like to give you the most complete answer I can.

Online co-op is not currently planned. The reason for this is comes down to complexity and time. Online multiplayer introduces a huge amount of complexity into the way any game needs to be structured (code-wise). Gungeon was started as a single player only game, and it was only by limiting the co-op to local that we were able to work that feature into our development timeline without huge re-writes, and delays. Believe me, we looked into online extensively, and asked around. We determined that a conservative estimate would have our gameplay engineer working for around half a year to get it up to snuff, and that would be at the cost of several bosses and enemies (the bread and butter of the game). In addition, our team is very small and we do not have an experienced network engineer here, so it would be very difficult to estimate how much time it will take or even guarantee the quality and performance of the net-code. This is compounded by the fact that our game is extremely fast paced and unforgiving at times, and if a player gets killed because of latency- that would make me very very sad. I can’t think of another bullethell game that moves as fast as ours with online co-op. (I'm sure there are and I just don't know about them, regardless it is something that makes online particularly hard for our game).

Tim Ambroji, one of the devs on Jamestown, another really great bullethell/shmup game with local only co-op echos the sentiment here. [blog.us.playstation.com]

Originally posted by Tim Ambroji:
We’ve tried to make it happen a few times now, but you wouldn’t believe how hard it is to port a local-only game to online multiplayer when it wasn’t designed that way in the first place! Not to mention, Jamestown is a twitchy, low-latency game where a single frame of error often means the difference between life and death.”

Rami Ismail, part of Vlambeer commented on adding online co-op to Nuclear Throne here.

Six months would actually be a lowball for getting it right.

We can add broken online in two months of work, but it'd be unbalanced, frustrating and laggy. Basically any complaint you see about online games.

I think to get it right, we'd have to restructure the game from scratch, and make every enemy shoot half the amount of projectiles. It'd just be a different game. As of now, there's a *lot* going on at all time.

Someone else in another thread on these forums suggested the notion that any game backed by Devolver Digital has no excuse for not putting online multiplayer in. To that person, I say this: Please understand that while Devolver is an amazing publisher that we love very much, part of the reason they are so great is that they let us do our thing. They are not game developers, there is no one at Devolver who is going to swoop in and solve a several month network engineering problem.

We understand that lots of players would like to be able to play the game with their friends who aren't in the same room as them, and sincerely wish that it was easier for us to put in the game and guarantee its quality.

With all of that said, Nvidia has announced something called “GameStream Co-op” which, in theory, allows a second player to take control of the Player-2 slot, with the video being streamed to them. It is currently in beta, and we have not been able to test it yet. Similarly, the same type of sharing can be done on the PS4 with SharePlay. Hopefully these services will work for some people, though I am not confident in them enough to call them a real solution to online multiplayer, at least for our game.

I hope that answers your question, and thank you very much for your interest in the game.

Cheers

D

I was sold on this as soon as I saw a few seconds of footage. Waiting for release has been painful.

I apparently have a weakness for twin-stick roguelites. Binding of Isaac is good fun and I love Nuclear Throne to pieces.

Same. Everthing I've seen points to this being the love child of Isaac and Throne, the former's crazy weapon and items and enemies + the latter's more satisfying combat and skillful gameplay

Been waiting for this one for a while now. Glad I don't have to work tomorrow, because if GMG gets me my key in a timely fashion, I'll be spending a lot of quality time with this puppy. I've been jonesing for a good twin stick shooter, but held off in anticipation for Gungeon.

$1.50?

How?

$14.99 vs. $13.49. Basically they're punishing people for wanting to wait for reviews to hit, which is not a particularly pleasant practice really.

I'm so tempted by this game but I'm in two minds. I hate Binding of Isaac, and I wonder how much like that this feels.

Come on, it's a common thing with preorders!

I really didn't like Isaac, but that was mainly down to the "compass firing" and the generally feeling of the game.

The fact that EtG has granular firing wins me over immediately, only potential fly in the ointment is the Unity issue that the PS4 has at times.

Do you feel that about every game with preorders? And it's not uncommon for indie games to have reviews out the same day. Hyper Light Drifter press builds didnt go out till the day before release

Early GAF impressions say this is like a more tactical satisfying Isaac. If you disliked how that game controlled, you might like this
So Enter the Gungeon is really cool; a more tactile and impactful Binding of Isaac.

I hated how nothing in Isaac felt it had weight; you skid about, tears just.. splashed on people and then stuff would die. Here things lumber around, bullets have feedback and your character's jaunt all add up for a nice feeling game.

It is but it's a shitty practice. Not as bad as pre-order exclusive DLC though. Ideally, the lower price would persist for the first few days after launch.

Thankfully, the game is almost certainly good in this case.

I prefer much more a discount on a pre-order than any useless DLC like many other games do.
