During GameStop’s 2016 Investor Day, the company’s Chief Operating Officer Tony Bartel stated that GameStop is pleased to see the introduction of technology like virtual reality and rumored new console launches, some of which seem imminent. While it’s no mystery that at least one new console, the Nintendo NX, is going to have an imminent launch, it’s interesting to note how Tony Bartel spoke of multiple launches, hinting at the release of the rumored upgraded new version of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles.

In a Q&A session, an analyst asked if the "new console" comments were related to the NX or other consoles, GameStop executives said they would not be commenting further. Those types of announcements will come from platform-holders. Later during the event, in a segment unrelated to new console launches, management teased, "As usual, we know more than we can share."

For all we know 'near future' could mean 5 years, and by then NX, PS5, and Xbox two would have been out. I don't take this as evidence of PS4.5 and Xbox 1.5.

So expected is going to happen? Shocking I must say ;).

To be serious, nice hearing word on this now, so I hope Nintendo & Sony do a good job showing their new hardware this fall. While I'm not getting a PS4K (getting the base PS4 instead; don't have an HD TV and don't mind differences between game versions) I might get a NX next year, so hopeful Nintendo does a good job showing it off :).

Retail remaining the biggest share * long term* seems kind of an stretch.

About new consoles I don't think it comes as a surprise for anyone XD

It's an investor thing at the beginning of the fiscal year, so "near future" probably means within the next twelve months.

This could mean a million things, from new hardware bundles (ps4 + call of duty) to new remodels of current gen hardware (xb slim), to new iterations of consoles (ps4k) to brand new hardware altogether (nx). Which of those 4 and how soon is impossible to guess.

Considering this is for investors, i'd assume it means within fiscal year, but you could be (sorta) right - it could mean they want to keep investors long-term by assuring them that consoles/physical games aren't going anywhere anytime soon (so please don't sell all your stock, thanks).

Eh...yes...but are they treating PS4K as a brand new console or a revision of PS4? I don't see why they would treat it as an entirely new unit to the point where its not even considered in the same category as the original PS4.

I don't think sony is dumb enough to try and push it as a completely new product with 40 mil current customers and more still buying the old one for the first time

Goddamnit E3 can't happen soon enough. The constant speculation, leaks and supposed insider stories is getting tiring as fuck.

Just tell me what the NX is, tell me if "PS4K" is a new more powerful console or just upscales games to 4k.

So much speculation and insecurity - so few answers. Please let it be June already ;-)
