Uncharted 4 spoiler free early copy impressions

The tone is nothing like TLOU. Like... what?

It's more grounded and the story has a bigger focus on characters. But the actual tone is nothing like TLOU.

Edit: Regardless, I guess confirmation bias will be a thing.

Seems like last of us meets Uncharted, game of the year confirmed then.

Last of Us was just jaw dropping and this will be Amazing!

Yep, it was always going to have more a grounded tone coming from TLOU and being ND's last UC. I dig it.

I'll probably play this twice on PS4 and replay a couple of more times on PS4 Neo lol

This game looks so good it really doesn't need Neo (but I wouldn't mind it!). The 30 fps is almost completely locked and the game rarely hiccups even under the most beautiful scenery.

It's a bit more somber and serious, like TLOU (or like any serious action movie) but there's still jokes and a little cute shenanigans, but it's very much a side trait, not a central pillar of the story-telling here.

I'm reposting my thoughts from the closed thread. I will add one new comment here:

The E3 set piece is, without question, the best, most exciting set piece Naughty Dog has ever created. It tops the train, the collapsing building, and the parachute jump. You just have to play it to believe it but it's simply thrilling. There's also plenty of other exciting moments, so don't worry about set piece quantity.

OLD POST BELOW

I played 11 hours today on Hard and am done for the night, so here are my impressions:

Positive

- I'm not sure how many chapters are in the game, but if it's anything similar to previous games, this is going to be an 18-20 hour game, which is insane. To be fair, at least an hour of that time was spent trying to figure out puzzles, which are orders of magnitude harder than previous games. They are VERY challenging for me.

- By far the biggest surprise is the massive improvement in gameplay, specifically gun combat. I played both betas so I knew there were improvements, but I think they even improved on the betas because gunplay is best-in-class.

- Character movement and animations are sublime, also best-in-class

- Controlling vehicles is super easy and fun

- First few Chapters and last few I played today are awesome and stay true to the Uncharted mantra (over-the-top action, great pacing, great character interation/chatter)

Mixed

While I appreciate a long game, it definitely has pacing issues in the first third of what I played. The first couple of chapters are perfectly paced and exciting, and then there's one locale that just slogs on and on and on over the course of a couple chapters. I spent three hours in that one locale and it was pretty brutal because it was the first locale with typical Uncharted enemies/gunplay, but without the typical expert pacing.

The best example of this is you'll have an objective to reach a tower, let's say. But instead of climbing two or three ledges and using a rope swing to get there, the game has you climb a ledge, walk around to a sliding section, slide down, jump over, climb up, have a gun fight, walk around, rope swing up, have a gun fight, slide down, jump across, have a gun fight, etc. Basically, something that could be accomplished in two or three sections (platforming/gun fight/platforming, for example) instead takes 6-8 sections to complete, for no apparent reason other than to let Naughty Dog show off the new gameplay mechanics in their first "open world" environment.

This maybe wouldn't be a problem except it slows down the game in the beginning of it, which isn't the best place to slow the game down considering how it started. But, more annoyingly, there is no payoff in the end. I won't spoil anything, but it's absolutely not worth the hours spent at the locale. I noticed this problem started happening in Uncharted 3 when they went to France and ended up with just a clue that led them to Syria. It basically spent a ton of time for not much payoff. The same problem occurs here, and for people like me who prefer the Drake's Fortune style of a more singular, focused adventure, it's frustrating.

Negative

- Sound. This is, without a doubt, the worst soundtrack I've ever heard from a Naughty Dog game (I've only played the Uncharted series and TLoU). My favorite soundtrack is Uncharted 2, and my favorite song aside from Nate's Theme is the song that plays during the Ice Caves level when Nate and Tenzin make their final discovery. There is not a single song so far that has been even decent, let alone memorable. I'm honestly stunned by how nonexistent the music is.

This is by far the most egregious casualty of Neil Druckmann's desire to change the tone of the game. What I'm trying to say is that even though the tone of the story and cutscenes is more somber than in previous games, and has been shown to the public as such, there is still a ton of lighthearted dialogue and banter, so it really feels like previous Uncharted games in that regard. However, the music is an atrocity. At this point I can only hope for a miracle in the last half/third/however much I have left to play.

- Some characters have enragingly low amounts of screen time. I can't say any more, but I am praying that things change. This is a decision Neil made that I wish he wouldn't have. I am okay with taking a risk and changing the tone of the series. There have been a couple of moments where I got misty-eyed, and that's to Neil's credit. I was skeptical that the tone would hurt the game, but it hasn't in terms of story (but absolutely has hurt the sound). But if you are able to successfully introduce a brand new character and your game is going to be the longest you've made so far, you should be able to fit other characters into the story.

Misc

Do not play on Hard on your first playthrough or you will not be able to use the rope moves because you'll get destroyed before you land. Play on Normal and you'll have a much better time. Playing on Hard definitely contributed to my annoyance with the particular chapter I played that I mentioned above.

Yea, exactly. It's still a UC game at heart. But more grounded, a bit more serious and a focus on the characters. TLOU tone, it ain't.

1. Story:

The story doesn't feel right. It doesn't feel like Uncharted. It doesn't know whether to be lighthearted or serious business most of the time. There's too much of a TLOU vibe in the story beats. Like I mentioned before, it feels like your enjoyment of UC4 is heavily reliant on whether you like the story of TLOU and how it was presented. The tone of the game is very jarring, because the game wants you to feel emotional and serious when there are cutscenes, but then you have all these jokes and hilarity in gameplay and in those same cutscenes that make the overall tone just very jarring to me. There are moments where I feel like Druckmann is trying to make the game too artsy (don't know if this is the right word to use) just to make it stand out without having relevance to the main plot. The story has an existential crisis and doesn't know if it wants its story to be about the adventure or be about Nate. It felt unsatisfying on both sides and let me tell you: Libertalia is the weakest "city" out of all the UC games.

Bolded is what I worried about most. Thank you for helping me temper my hype. Blergh.

I'm in the minority in that I actually really enjoyed the beta music; since I enjoyed it will I like the rest of the music?

I don't mind if it goes from lighthearted to serious at times. I think it is finally putting the game in a realistic point of view, though I don't know how this game ends I have my theories but if it ends with what i have in my head then I think a more serious and TLOU vibe could be warranted because this is the last Uncharted game as well.

Hype is deflating a lot reading about the lack of setpieces and attempt at being too serious with the story. I'm still looking forward to it, but I'm prepping myself to be disappointed, something I wasn't expecting. For me, the series has always been about over the top moments in an unrealistic adventure, merged with some great humor along the way. It doesn't sound like this is that game at all :(

Yea, you will. I have no complaints about the music and it's nice in some places. But I was never a big fan of the old UC soundtracks.

Edit: This is like a mini review thread. Tons of glowing impressions but everyone looks to the one negative one to confirm their fears. Whatever. I'm gonna go beat the game and maybe do a write up later.

Oh god, these bad reviews. I guess I'll just skip this.

Oh my gosh not this crap again! I seriously hope this is a joke post. Reminds me of how everyone was panning Ratchet and Clank before it came out due to that one guy saying it was only 5 hours... -_-

I'm a third of the way through the game, and my biggest concern is that the trade off to a more grounded Uncharted will not be worth it unless they can pull off the story. Take away the "ridiculous" Uncharted moments, fine, but they need to be replaced with a story that warrants their exclusion.

Right now the game feels like it is banging against itself a bit. It's quieter, more grounded, more "human," sure, but the story really needs to achieve its heavy moments and bridge the gap in tone from the previous games.

Currently it is great but I'm worried that the tonal change will not compensate for the changes to the formula in a meaningful, better way.

TLOU is my favorite game of all time. UC2 is my favorite action game of all time. Each does its own thing better.

UC4 currently feels like it is trying to have a story as good as TLOU at its own expense.

If they pull it off in the next 2/3rd of the game, I'll eat my words.

But I am concerned.

I like Henry Jackman's work with Matthew Vaughn but everything else has been forgettable, disheartened to hear people echoing that's the case here. I thought Edmonson was pitch perfect with the series.

Yeah I was never much of a fan of the original music either. When we first heard the music in the PSX demo I thought it was better than most of the music from previous games.

Obviously I haven't played the game yet, but from what I've read the first third is the only slow third. Apparently 2/3 and 3/3 move more and more towards Uncharted of yore.

!!!!!!

I don't think I've read anything on the game that I disagreed with more on. Good lord.

I dont get the constant The Last Of Us comparisons those are 2 completely different games in tones setup and story.

Have you played it yet? It is a fair comparison. Maybe not in tone but what ND are doing with the story and presentation.

The game is closer to TLOU in that regard than any previous Uncharted game.

You playing it, dark10x?
Finished it. Can't really talk about it, obviously, but that comment just stuck out to me. I literally couldn't believe what I was reading.

Do you feel that's a problem?

I'd like to present my thoughts on it, but alas, not yet.

I agree. Love the First Class and Kingsman scores. Liked the Winter Soldier stuff in the context of the movie. The rest has been pretty unmemorable to me.

Really sad that Edmondon isn't attached to UC4 but I'm keeping an open mind for the soundtrack.

I never really found any of the Uncharted soundtracks to be that memorable, other than Drakes theme, all of it was solid, but nothing on the level of what Gustavo Santoalla did with TLoU.

I agree with you.

I love the soundtrack, and it kicks into the gameplay in really inventive, unexpected ways at times.

I think it's great.

I don't know man I have $64 left in my wallet but if this game is as bad as they say it is, I may just hold onto it and buy this when the price drop.

But everybody says it's great? Some don't like the music or the story compared to other games, but pretty much everybody is in agreement that it has the best gameplay of the lot. Which is what's most important to me.

Uncharted soundtrack never was anything interesting. I only liked Nate's theme and that was it. Everything else was just... there.

I don't think it's a problem but rather a strength...if the story reaches the emotional highs it is striving for.

Thus far, a third of the way through the game, I have my doubts.

I hope I'm wrong.

The story/relationship concerns would probably matter more to me if 95% of games today didn't have trash stories/characters to begin with. The Last of Us was great in this regard because the pacing was excellent and the story had a ton of well placed ups and downs supported by strong performances from all the characters involved. I never was a huge Indiana Jones style story. It was just enough to keep me interested, but I've been into the series because of twists, great performances, set pieces, and good game play. We'll see how Uncharted 4 fares.

You cant be serious.

Idk, after seeing AKyemi beat it in 11 hours and then say UC3's story was better, it's sort of confirming my dark fears about it and then suddenly more guys are coming out the woodworks agreeing with him. :(

I can't take another disappointment. If this is a disappointment I may just give up gaming altogether. I've been burned with MGS last year and that was a critical strike to my gaming HP.

I'm fucking joking I'm literally dying to play this lol.
