Giant Bomb doing a live Quick Look of Stellaris tomorrow at 1pm Eastern if anyone's interested. East coast crew.

Had Stellaris on the brain and compulsively started a new CKII game last night. So many of my playthroughs start the same, and I wouldn't have it any other way: just trying to be a cool ruler with cool traits, throw parties, fulfill ambitions and horde cash. Maybe a murder plot or two. Then I meet an untimely death before I've got my house in order and shit goes south quick.

Going to try playing with more attention towards claims tonight, force myself to dive into the mechanics I'm less comfortable dealing with.

I don't wait to wait four more days... Release it now pls

The music, UI, gameplay, everything is looking so good.

Austin seems like the kind of guy who would be down as fuck with Stellaris and take away some amazing stories. Glad to see them putting out some coverage.

I'm buying this game, (well, have already pre-ordered), and yet I feel like I won't actually play it myself for weeks after launch, waiting for more tutorials lol.

Watch Quill's first video and you'll know 90% of what you need to play. He's very good at explaining everything as he goes along.

Having watched some videos, I think if you've played any 4X previously you will be able to dive right in. There's an in-game tutorial and the UI seems really good, almost Civ5-level, at keeping players appraised of what they need to know. (I haven't seen combat yet though so maybe this changes.) The grand strategy gameplay will slowly reveal itself as you go along.

Yeah this game seems pretty easy (in Paradox terms) to get the hang of. Definitely more EU4 level of learning curve rather that HOI3 or CK2 level.

Weirdly, I think combat is probably going to be the hardest thing to get a hold of, in pretty stark contrast to CKII and EU4 where the actual figures involved are pretty straightforward.

Since the embargo broke, Stellaris jumped up to the second spot of Steam's top sellers chart (sorted by revenue, NA region). I was actually expecting it to sit in 5th-8th place for the duration of its launch, being as niche as it is. Pleasantly surprised and happy for the devs.

The only thing this game needs is a galactic market to buy and sell trade goods on and it would literally be the Eve Online simulator.

Yep, I expect we're going to see one of the first big expansion DLCs being a civilian/market one. In Distant Worlds: Universe it had one and it was a great addition for the genre, it was also a sort of 4x/grand strategy hybrid which the lead designer of this game has also played I believe. Would definitely like to see that.

Also since people like influence/territorial map timelapses, here's one of EVE, between 2007-2016 where I timestamped it from where it gets interesting. The far right of the map are the drone regions where Russian alliances and the Russian bloc coalition has stayed for many years as you can see, it changes a lot due to a lot of civil wars/internal fighting. On the left you can also see that reddit alliance (TEST) rise up strong, and then entirely be wiped out.

Not much unlike watching Stellaris timelapses. I've always loved timelapses since it tells so many stories, that one in EVE... so many wars, so many battles, so much politics.

Also Arumba's first episode of his LP is out.

Never even thought of stuff like Gundam. That'd be awesome.
Somebody has to make a dune mod , right? The prospect makes me so happy.

Star Wars, Star Trek, Babylon 5, Dune, Farscape, Battlestar Galactica. Heck, I could see a Stargate SG-1 mod. Maybe even WH40k, although having everyone be fanatical militarist xenophobes will get old, I think. The possibilities are endless.

Didn't even think of those. This game could end up being my favorite game ever. Haven't really enjoyed any space game since I played freelancer to death.

I just don't see how Star Wars or BSG will transfer well... Not to say people won't make those mods, but I think Star Trek is the obvious choice given the state building that we see from Enterprise through to DS9.

To be honest with you some of it will just be playing with the ships and leaders. I doubt people will be looking for an authentic Star Wars replica, but having the ships, events and characters themed after Star Wars would be enough.

k guys, help me out. I did a check on System Requirements Lab, and according to that site my laptop doesn't even hit the minimum specs, but looking at those specs and my specs, shouldn't I be fine?

Especially when it gives me the following for the recommended specs ( suddenly my CPU is fine )

How does this game have SO much attention to detail and SO many systems in place? I just discovered this yesterday and my mind is compeltely blown, preordered right away.

Yeah I think the app just isn't very good at judging laptop specs. You should be fine.

Paradox, yo. Superlative dev, even if there are bugs. If these were somehow on console there'd be fanboy meltdowns all day long about them :D

From watching Quill's videos it does seem easier to get into. It seems like a game that is what you make of it. You probably could enjoy the game only knowing the complete basics; however there is a lot of depth in it more so than EU4. So it really just comes down to how much the player wants to really learn the game. I think this will be one of the easier Paradox games to get into due to the setting and also the UI is extremely easy to navigate and clear.

Aiii

So not worth it

Aside from the experience of the developer in this genre, a lot of it has to do with the focus of the development team, since graphics aren't that important (though the game looks amazing) the main focus of the development is on the game mechanics themselves.

I'm getting BOTF vibes.
Defo. Put some custom events in to turn the Coalition of Planets into the Federation and you're there basically.

Borg, Iconians and Undine/8472 as end game crisis. Voth, Organians, First Federation etc as Fallen Empires... Gonna be glorious.

Graphics look awesome in this too, though.

I understand what you mean anyways, I remember EUIV and CKII.

YOu guys can't imagine the huge hype burst that I've just suffered since yesterday. I mean.... wow.

Also the thing with CK2 is that it is one of the few games where you can create threads with titles like 'I just got a child with my kid, but I want to kill it and marry her to my brother' without getting the police after you

Went and ordered and got Legacy of the Void at the same time, at last. I went for the £19.99 option.

Yep. I really enjoyed that game even with its issues. This could easily be the spiritual successor and take it to a whole new level with the right mod development.

As much as I'm looking forward to the game, I think i'm more excited for the mods.

Yeah, I'm surprised that Star Wars and Warhammer seem to be the main mods talked about on the paradox forums.

I think B5, Star Trek and Mass Effect mods will be the main ones for me. All feature a large amount of factions with diplomacy being a big thing among those factions.

So how does the multilayer work? Is scaled back into a quicker experience, because it seems like a single player game would take a week or two.
