Indie Games 2016 [May] Lets play some Indies!

Toma

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
Salt and Sanctuary is super fun, but disappeared a bit from my play plate once Dark Souls 3 released. It is obviously inspired by the souls formula, but it also adds its own spin to it. It seems a tad expensive, but it does have quite a bit of content and challenges and I really liked it.

OP impressions:

Daily Chthonicle is an interesting one. Free version in the OP, its basically a text adventure RPG with a UI disguising the setup as a news paper agency. Send out reporters, decide on mini encounters, equip and train them and find the solutions to the mysteries throughout the cities. Good sense of progression, although it might seem a bit aimless at first. Definitely worth checking out. The incredibly confusing UI and styl over readability/non save games kept it from going to the highest categories, but maybe they will work on that for the full version.

Huh, I just remembered that super Papers, Please inspired game called the Westport Independant and apparently it came out back in January? Only has mixed reviews on Steam, anyone here try it?

I played it a few months ago. Promising but VERY rough. The developer posts on Something Awful pretty frequently.

I picked it up just to support the devs as I put so many hours into Dredmore and I think the same. The settings cool along with the focus on the characters in you colony and it looks great for a game in the genre. However it's still lacking so really basic features and it's a long way off from being able to compete with the systemic complexity of a game like Rimworld.

I'd wait to see what it's like at release if you're on the fence.

Overfall - $9.99 (PC, Mac, Linux)

store.steampowered.com/app/402310/

An open-world strategy RPG with roguelite elements. Sail the high seas and unite (or annihilate) the disparate factions before you as you quest to bring down an even greater foe. Use your characters' traits to your advantage to talk, fight, outsmart, or more, as you face everything in your way. Bonus: includes an event editor.
I haven't played it yet, but man does it look interesting.

Quite a good indie pick-n-mix bundle at Bundlestars going on at the moment. You can get some real solid games like INK, Skulls of the Shogun, Nihilumbra, Ironclad, Gemcraft or Story About my Uncle for super cheap. Although the real reason I bring it up is Malebolgia is there too, which was playtested by fellows in this thread.

Overfall's well worth the asking price. Its structure is a little like FTL only instead of being chased by a thread across systems you've got a time limit to explore the islands in the world and after incremental periods hard enemies will start spawning. The combat's fun (tactical with a focus on buffs/debuffs) and the lack of levelling means that you'll depend on strategy rather than grinding plus there's a ridiculous amount of classes, weapons and trinkets to unlock so your options keep on expanding as you play. As for the downsides I imagine it will got to a point where you figure out some broken combo and the combat will become boring; right now part of the fun for me is my support characters constantly dying and me having to switch them out for new classes on the fly as you can only get one support of each class per playthrough. I'm also getting quite a bit of stuttering.

I've put 3 hours in so far and I'm enjoying my time with it.

Finally got around to playing Software Inc. Holy shit is this a complex/deep game compared to Game Dev Tycoon and the sort. Love it though, played it for like 4 hours straight the other night

If anyone is looking for impressions for Soft Body, I made an |OT|.

It executes minimalism really well, is mesmerizingly beautiful, and taxes the multitasking portion of the mind in its later stages. It's a really clever mix of well-this-is-peaceful and oh-shit-this-is-impossible.

I hyped the hell out of it, which doesn't always pay off with something so obtuse. Thankfully, it does. Easy GOTY contender for me.

Glad to hear that Brigador is leaving Steam EA in June.

I've been playing Not A Hero and Full Bore. I've heard from the Steam Community thread that game is getting content that was on Xbox one and I'am thrilled with that game in general.
The No No Negotiation Mission is hard as fuck
But that was more on me then anything.

Of what I've played of Full Bore, it reminds me of Steam World Dig but without the crappy combat. FWIW, it feels like a chore to play beneath the charming exterior.

I played LASTFIGHT last month at Rezzed - a lot of fun with friends but I don't see it holding people's attention for too long.

Astrokill is supposed to release on Friday. Been looking forward to that

And Toma, you never had the missed games from the last thread to OP. Stephen's Sausage Roll and those games

Yeah, felt it was a bit too late when I got around to it. Just gonna add them next month.

Astrokill is only going to be $10, that's much cheaper than I was expecting. Anyone else checking it out tomorrow? I recall Phawx was hyping it up a few weeks back

I learned a very tantalizing tidbit about The Last Night. On Twitter, I asked if The Last Night might be at E3. The devs said they could have shown the game at E3 this year but decided it was still too early for an official reveal (since the game is targeting a 2017 release)

So that says two things to me:
1) the game is pretty far along if an E3 reveal was a possibility
2) whatever publisher/company that's supporting them could have gotten them an E3 reveal/booth (so that's a good sign)

I can't vouch for it myself, too busy with Overwatch and Stardew Valley (still), but the maker of Long Live the Queen has a new game out called A Little Lily Princess. Just bought Magical Diary recently and I'm looking forward to digging into it.

It has a demo on their page and you can buy it through Steam or directly from them.

The early alpha I played was really good, if a bit hard. It took all of 30 minutes for me to get the feel on flying correctly, which is very impressive to me. Most space combat games I've played feel very clunky, almost forklift-like. But the UI along with how the boosters and stuff worked made finessing the ship feel like an extension of my thoughts very quickly.

I'll give it another go when it launches to see what's different and post some more impressions.

The only thing I was concerned about was the difficulty ramp so early on.

Just learned about this today, saw comparisons to Hexcells and it was featured as one of the best games of PAX East by Game Informer

Erm, we aren't selling homepage spots if that was the implication <.<

Honestly just hard to stay on top of all the indie games. Hard to discern which are going to be reviewed and which aren't. Wanna make sure that we can get some in the spotlight.

How varied are the mission environments? The combat and ships look but space looks kind of dull. I guess they're going for a more realistic industrial aesthetic

I like the website. There was no implication.

Exactly. This is a good place to find them.

The mission environments are all pretty similar. Asteroids and ships. The only missions I've done have been combat focused, but they are pretty specific, like kill X amount of ships or Kill Y before it reaches Z.

I just played the EA version that just got on Steam and the game is a lot easier, though it's still pretty damn hard.

Originally when I played, I didn't even get close enough to the main ship to destroy it's turrets. And now I played through two more missions and managed to destroy a good amount of turrets.

I still failed the missions but at least I think I actually have a chance now as opposed to before.

OP impressions

3030 Deathwar redux:
I still havent found a top down space pirating/trading game that really gripped me in the past few years, but this one was among the best in that regard as the story hook and character writing felt very classic and likeable. I toyed with this for around 3 hours, and its definitely fun, although it has some issues with the way it hides info behind characters you need to find first on random space stations and upgrade options that feel a bit limited.
Nonetheless, the game is very polished and focussed on its aspects. Definitely worth a try.

Halcyon 6: Starbase Commander

This game is fun. Its basically an RPG, in which you are tasked with defending and rebuilding a space station. You get FTL style events, level ups including better attacks, tactical turn based combat, unlockable station features and a cute story on top. It might be a bit limited as you are mostly focussed on tht single space station, but this is genuinely fun and a super interesting take on the RPG formula.

Highly recommended

Yep. Halcyon 6 is pretty good, I believe the developers said the game is leaving early access by the end of the year, so I stopped playing because they will put even more content in Act 1 once it's done.
