Zelda Wii U - Recap of 5 hours gameplay stream

I sure would hope it doesn't work the same as it does in Skyward Sword (resetting the notifications when you exit the game), given how many times they strongly emphasized that it only shows up once. Seemed like they were really trying to reassure fans it wouldn't be that awfulness again without saying as much. I don't think they ever clarified specifically that notifications don't reset upon exiting the game though.

I think they sort of did when they said something along the lines of: it only keeps popping up because we're at e3, but normally it will only happen the first time.

Now within reach play through, it did only happen once. It was only when they reset play throughs that it would happen again. I don't think they would have said what they said if it resets after u turn the game off and back on.

i don't want to sound like im expressing some sort of "Nintendo exceptionalism"

but it honestly seems like this game is more mechanically rich than the vast majority of open world games

anyone else have the same feeling?

As far as depth of systems goes? Probably not, although the crafting is more than we've seen from any Zelda thus far. As far as having responsive combat? I'd give that an "Oh hell yeah."

This game puts such a fucking smile on my face. I haven't been this hyped to play a game, since the day I replayed the intro to Metroid Prime, and realized that it was actually fucking awesome. It's been longer than that since an upcoming release really had me hyped like this. Maybe GTA IV, maaaybe. It feels so weird to say this, but I think I'm gonna have to replay MGSV while I wait, lol

That bottom image is actually closer to what the game actually looks like, far as I can tell. I think their stream had some gamma issue or something because the game looked way more vibrant being played on actual HDTVs

Highly probable, Nintendo is not one to skimp on colors

So Link can taunt or is this a special item? https://youtu.be/Da5i_bLRaMo?t=1964

Also interesting that warm clothes doesn't keep Link from freezing in cold water
(and blue Game Over instead of red)

I don't know if this has been addressed already, but because the audio actually says "Wake up, Link", does that mean we won't be able to name him any more?

I haven't seen that in any of the Treehouse stream. I'm guessing it's just whistling to call Epona, if she's in the game.

Could work like a lot of JRPGs where you can rename them and it applies to all text but the voice acting will still call characters by their canon names.

If you look at the temperature gauge, you'll see that Link only receives cold damage when the needle hits the blue part. And when Link puts on warm clothes it doesn't remove the blue part completely, it simply make it shorter. So if the temperature gets even colder, and the needle reaches blue again, Link should take damage even with warm clothes on. So it makes sense that icy water would make the temperature gauge tank, but I think we can also assume that there will be areas outside of water that are even colder than what we saw in the demo.

This should also mean that there are even warmer clothes that reduce the cold meter even more.

I guess it's also important to note that the icy water wasn't an instant death, it just made the health tick down very fast. So that's something players may be able to work around with more health, better gear, or smart play.

We've already seen another example of clothing for cold weather: the trailer has parts where Link is wearing thickly padded boots with spiked soles. I would assume they stack to increase cold resistance as well as negate slipping on ice.

Ah, that would be cool.

I wonder what we're going to have to do in hot areas. In cold areas it makes sense. Wear more clothes, use fire, eat food. But in the heat, there's only so many clothes you can take off, and eating food probably won't help. Maybe you'll be able to make cold drinks or cold dishes. Maybe you'll have to find water to take a dip in.

Maybe you would need to find shade once in a while, like Xenoblade X's EM storms.

I'm sure you'll be able to make cool drinks with White Chuchu Jelly:
A jiggly substance that acame from a White Chuchu. It's cool to the touch, and squeezing it seems to relieve stress. If struck, it will explode in a cold mist.

Shade would be a good idea. Pockets of safety out in the desert. Making planning your route from one point to another a challenge.

Wow, the death animations in this game are...brutal, not just for the Zelda series but in general. I mean even when link Ragdolls, he's also animated to wince in pain and grab his joints and struggle. It can be amusing but it's hard to look at times.

Do we know if this is 1080p or 720? For a game releasing in 2017 that would be ludicrous, but it's still the Wii U we're talking about... Most gameplay feeds seem to be 720p and that kinda would be a shame for this great art style.

We've talked about freezing but what about overheating? Imagine Link wearing his warmest clothes in the desert. That has to have some effect on him too, right?

I think it would be cool if he'd use significantly more stamina when he's overheating. Like, for example, if it takes 10 seconds for the stamina bar to deplete when sprinting or climbing, it now becomes 3 seconds or something.

90% positive they mentioned that clothing would also factor in hotter areas like it does in colder ones. So there will likely be some kind of special outfits that help disperse heat and keep Link cool. And I'm sure you're right that wearing winter weather clothes in the desert will cause him to overheat.

Wii U is 720p30fps NX is 1080p60fps or 4k30fps. Not confirmed but just random stuff I'm making up.

4K for NX is definitely out of the question, especially considering that NX won't be premium priced. I hope the Wii U version is 1080 and the NX version has some more polish to it (e.g. less pop-in, maybe a better draw distance, just slicker in general).

Yes on Wii U, very unlikely for NX. I would guess 1080p 30fps, with better post processing and AA. Changing the framerate would require changing the animations and not even Neo or Scorpio are gonna be putting out 4k visuals like that for a while.

One thing I just realized. They didn't show the hood. Obviously, they're just going to be another piece of clothing, and there will probably be many different types of them, but I'm a little surprised it wasn't available to wear. I imagine they'll have some sort of special effect like making stealth easier or something.

The person in this video is talking about how he built a seesaw using the magnet, drops a boulder on one end and goes flying.

"I'm not a huge Nintendo guy, I'm not a huge Zelda guy, but I played 45 minutes of Zelda and I'm going to get an NX on launch... Like I... I... I need more of that game now..."

lol

But yeah. Nintendo has this crappy opportunity to actually let people down here with NX Zelda. It was already stated that the NX version will feature improved visuals/performance over Wii U version, but that extent is the question. I hope Nintendo does the very best it can to upgrade it for NX.

That and I'm sure some masks are coming. Imagine Midnas helmet?

Those are from a different thread but unless Nintendo started releasing bullshots I'd say it's still possible they are from the NX version. 60fps Zelda has been limited to LinkBetweenWorlds and Triforce Heroes but bringing a 30fps game to 60fps doesn't mean all the animations need to be remade at 60fps. The game's engine can handle the doubling of certain animation frames automatically. Sure everything wouldn't be actually 60fps but the game itself would be and would feel smoother and more responsive. It just wouldn't look much smoother without actually adding more frames to the animations.

Again, making stuff up

Yeah that makes sense, probably mapped to the d-pad also.

I wished they would've showed some helmet piece as well, less spoiler I guess :p
More stealth with hoods is a great idea. Knit hat for cold resistance please.

Yep, they confirmed that in the stream. That those simple warm clothes only work for minor cold areas. But if you go into a colder area (maybe a snowstorm?) that you'll need warmer clothes.
