New Board Gaming |OT2| On Tables, Off Topic

[*]Jamaica, which sounds like a Puerto Rico style Euro, but which turned out to be sort of like Camel [C]Up with pirates. Eh

Putting aside the fact that I would play Camel Up with Pirates, I hope that your expectations of it being a Euro didn't badly undermine your experience playing. For a game with dice and card drawing, every player is actually working with the exact same tools in order to maneuver around the board. I have never had AstroLad's issue of unintentional combat. Trying to use your hand of cards to cleverly avoid (or initiate) a battle or to sneak through the backdoor to grab a treasure card allow for some surprisingly interesting plays to be made. It's also a racing game where you can finish last and win if you've accrued enough gold. I love it. Long live Camel Up! Long live Jamaica!

My 3-5 many weekly game group has turned into the Caverna and Kemet club. I've fallen into the trap of having new games to play each week, so it's nice to get many plays of the same game where you feel it's worth experimenting and honing a strategy. I scored a 91 in Caverna last time out, which I thought was pretty good! Then I looked at some posts in the BGG forums and realized we're just bad at it and a 91 should almost never win.

Kemet is so fucking good. With the black tiles from Ta-Seti, there are a crazy number of potential strategies. Even if two people both go white-red, for instance, one guy might go on the Crusade plan to get money for winning fights and the other can go straight to Hand of God for an economy plan. My friends will actually text me with some new first turn combo they've been thinking about and the build they would make in order to get there. It has a distinct Magic the Gathering feel with the strategy building and the different strengths between the colors. I hope we do the same thing with Cyclades once Kemet finally begins to show its age.

Played so many games at Origins. One that surprised me most was Mexica.

We picked it as our late night end of day game because my friend had in his head it was an easy going city building thing. This wasn't really the case because it plays out more like a back alley fight where at any moment another player teleports in from a canal, metaphorically stabs you (by putting down a pyramid to claim your zone), and then blocks you in a zone so you can't even leave without wasting your turn. It was quite fun, but also probably the most confrontational game we played all weekends, which is ridiculous considering we also played Forbidden Stars.

Bought the AvP boardgame for a surprising 60€. Gragged the Predalien, Loader and WY Mercenaries just in case.

Looks all great but they're all in sprues and my assembling skills are pretty rusty.

I'm debating bidding on a local auction for Coup+expansion. The game does seem a bit divisive. I love social deduction games and I enjoy a little bit of bluffing. What are your opinions on it? I wish they kept that game with the original theme. The Resistance flavor makes it less appealing.

The theming is mild to be honest in the base game at least. Just the look/names of the cards. It's utterly my favourite bluffing/hidden role game. Far better than Werewolf.

I'd recommend just about any other social deduction game over it.

If you have ios at least, I think the game is available f2p so give it a go.

I'm a big fan. However I think it may be harder to get to the table than an ultimate werewolf or resistance. Kind of like a "we have played the resistance too much" kind of game.

I introduced Coup to my coworkers shortly after we started playing games during lunch a couple months ago. They didn't like Avalon that much so I wasn't too hopeful, but Coup was an absolute hit. Whenever I bring it to work we play at least 6 games in a row, that's how hooked we are and how quickly our games are (we play those in less than an hour) due to how comfortable we feel with the game. It's elegant, quick, thrilling and easy to explain and learn. I think it's easily my most played game, and one of my favorites for sure. I definitely recommend it.

We actually got just the base game just last week and we were hooked. Had to order the expansion from Amazon due to our local game shop not having any in stock. The Reformation expansion was a bit off putting because we couldn't get into it right away with the additional gameplay mechanics. But after a few rounds, we adapted and have grown to like it. So yes, I would recommend it.

Coup is super fun, but it seemed like the final two players was always deterministic. One player would always have the inside track on getting the money to Coup and so the other was pretty much forced to make a low percentage bluff to stay in the game. Is this a common feeling?

After about 9 months of pining away for it, I got to play 7 Wonders again tonight. We played 6p with Leaders and Cities. In the first game, two neighboring players both managed to score 55 points in science alone (both had leaders and wonder stages to boost it). We glared at the people sitting next to them for not cutting green, but it was still pretty remarkable. I think we all assumed that those two stealing from each other would mean failure for both, but they put a beating on us instead.

I got to lead Plato and draft two sets of each color, which was not nearly good enough to win, but fun as hell to try to assemble. I made the mistake of picking black cards without realizing they weren't needed in a Plato set. Oops. Considering that you draft 21 cards in a game with Cities and each Plato set is 7 cards, I'm wondering if it's even reasonable to get a third set. I'd consider it a win regardless of what my point total was. XD I love this game. I wish the iPad app weren't vaporware and hope it isn't another half a year before gettibg to play it again.

Lastly, my group learned and played Mottainai tonight and our heads were spinning at the possibilities. The rulebook is dreadful, so have someone teach you if you have the option. For a game made of two decks of cards, this one will be on my brain for a few days.

Learning to properly set your hand for the final round is part of Coup. At first, it just comes down to trying to bluff, but as you play, you start to learn to either prepare your bank to have a coin advantage, or use the Ambassador power to arrange your cards correct before you wind up in the final two.

I agree, learning to set yourself up for the final two duel is crucial. So the first half of the game, you're trying to gain intel on what cards other players have and throwing them off by either having them challenge your role, or you challenge their's. Making someone lose one of their influences for no cost is the best way to eliminate people in the beginning.

Picked up Castles of the Mad King Ludwig, and got a chance to do a playthrough to learn the rules. Still some quirks I need to do some FAQing on, but I think I've mostly got it.

I like it.

Don't forget there are the iOS and Android apps. They are pretty good and have helped me play better because there is a decent solo campaign.

Ticket to Ride is only £2 on Steam - is that version any good? Worth picking up to play with friends online, or is it better in person?

Defenders of the Last Stand came in the mail yesterday. Hoping to get a solo game in this weekend and a full game next week.

Not looking forward to gluing dudes on their bikes though.

Played a ton of games on Origins.

Rick & Morty Total Rickall and Holmes: Sherlock vs. Mycroft were great additions I got to pick up.

How was Origin? Trying to get more impressions, so far seems like mostly positives compared to Gencon, and wanting a big game con to go to next year.

I know I'm a backer so it's expected, but I'm so looking forward to Scythe it's kind of funny. I wondered about how it worked with 2 players, but reading up on it, apparently it works well? With 2 players you even have the freedom not to attack each other. That's nice since being mean to your partner/spouse can make some games kind of un-fun.

This was my second year. It's good!

If I recall, your problems with Gen Con are that it is too crowded and there is too much non gaming stuff. Origins doesn't have those things. It's much easier to get in events and while I haven't experienced the hotel stuff (stayed with a friend) I have to imagine that's less of a hassle as well. Our weekend was spent playing games either in the board game library all day, demoing stuff in the dealer hall where you could easily walk up and play most stuff without waiting, or playing ticketed events, which were pretty easy to get (though their event website is bad).

It doesn't have the breadth of Gen Con, certainly, but if you just want to play games Origins is very good for that.

I adore Gen Con and it is still my favorite trip of the year because it has events for my non hardcore board game friends, lets you do big stuff like True Dungeon and mega games, and gives the feeling of taking over a whole city with nerdy folk. But if I was going to pick a con just to play board games, Origins is what I'd do.

Yea that's what I heard, that my two friends who went said. They had no trouble getting to try games, tons of games available to play, not overly crowded. I don't know the hotel situation though, but they did Airbnb and got a cheap place to stay nearby. I tried that with Gencon and it seems like everyone was hiking up their prices hardcore for Gencon time, or were way to far from the con center.

Housing issues and how fast events sell out are big issues with Gencon too for me.

My first Origins and I hated lines at PAX, I would 100% go to Origins if I can get time off and have the cash. Never been to Gencon but this had tons of space to move around, lots of new games and never an issue with crowds. I went with a friend who doesn't like huge crowds and he was in the same boat.

I would recommend to go early. Lost in Ryleh and Rick & Morty game sold out by Thursday, so other games could be in the same boat.

Just found this out, so I'll probably pick up the Android version...wish there were a PC version, though. My phone is getting a bit long in the tooth and I don't have a lot of memory left on it. Its why I haven't picked up the Pathfinder Card game either.

I play it often. It's fun. Its a little different than playing against humans, but its good practice, and you'll find it does help with game strategy.

I was browsing Facebook and saw the Massive Darkness Kickstarter. SO many exclusives. Why? It bugs me so much to see games that I may be interest littered with KS Exclusive content. :-/

Acquisition Disorder. I think it just play into our collecting and got to have them all nature.

Speaking of acquisition disorder, if you have Barnes and Noble near you they are doing summer clearance. I pick up few games for 50% off. Jarl (Duke retheme), Doomtown Reloaded, Steam Torpedo and La Isla for between $14-18 each.

B&N sales bring me back because it was actually a 50% off sale like ten years ago that got my wife and I into modern board gaming. Grabbed a RoboRally for 15 bucks (we had joked about getting it many times, and out of curiosity I looked it up and found BGG so when we saw it half off we were like why not?) and ten years later we've got 300+ games. :p Funny thing was RR is a really bad 2p game and yet we still really enjoyed it.

Went over to some friends and had a big 7p game night yesterday. Hanabi and Mysterium are always good (Mysterium is legit tough at 7) but I played Bang! The Dice Game and was shocked at how much everyone enjoyed it. We actually played a couple times. Definitely my favorite social deductionish game now, just edging ahead of Deception. It's stupid and reliant on dice rolls and doesn't require any intense commitment to lying or real strategy...which is exactly what I like about it, and why it worked well with a mostly non-gamer group. :D

Played my copy of BattleCON: Fate today for the first time, just one match (my Thessala vs another guy's Lord Eustace). Man... the characters in Fate are definintly wonky compared to War (but wonky in a good way). I so want a great BattleCON storage solution but I'll just suck it up and ziplock bag the individual kits and throw 'em all in a box if it means I can play the full game with all the currently released characters.

I also bought the Rick and Morty: Total Rickall game, based on the episode of the same name. I don't need another social deduction game that will never get played but I love the episode, love Rick and Morty, and know that a couple people at the game store are fans, so maybe this has a slight chance of getting played. I need to lie... :(

Been getting my co-workers off of monopoly the last few months with Catan and ticket to ride. Going swell. Move onto betrayal at house on the hill... dead on arrival. Try Battlestar Galactica.... deader than dead.

Always disappointing when people don't want to evolve.

Catan and Ticket to Ride are very different from Betrayal and BSG. If they liked the former, maybe stick to games along those lines?

I hosted a second game night for my coworkers on Friday and it went pretty well. So far we've played King of Tokyo, Ticket to Ride (Europe), Catan and 7 Wonders (plus the games we play over lunch like Coup and Codenames) and they've all been pretty well received. A coworker brought Spot It! and that was also liked as an in-between games game and night closer. My gf in particular told me we should get our own. We also played Tsuro this week during lunch thanks to another coworker and I really want to grab it now.

I ordered Takenoko and Lords of Waterdeep a couple days ago. Can't wait to get them and try them out. I got Cthulhu Realms this week and my gf and I have been playing it everyday (I really wanted a 2p game), and I played a 4p game when it arrives at work but it takes a bit too long to include it into the lunchbreak rotation and the 4 player limit is no good. I think I'll look into getting a more popular deck building game eventually but for now that one's more than enough.

BSG is a pretty heavy game. It is also very fiddly and very long. A lot of casual players don't like that. I would suggest Dark Moon is you have 5+ players. Very quick to teach and play while still having the hidden traitor mechanic.

Meh getting them to try Catan and ticket was an uphill battle, plus I'm moving soon so i don't really want to invest in too many more beginner games i won't play much on my own

Huh, never knew Dark Moon existed. My group is heavily into Resistance and now Coup, so I think Dark Moon would be a great game among a few of us who crave a more in-depth experience. Think I'll pick this up next, thanks!

Well I guess it comes down too what you're looking for out of gaming in different places. I absolutely love introducing people to the hobby and scaling them up, but it sounds like you're more fixated on just getting people to play the games you personally want to play the most. Fair warning here that that usually won't work for casuals. You'd probably be better off just trying to find a meetup of hardcore gamers or something, especially for games like that.

Yeah thinking machikoro. They just aren't ready to move beyond beginner games it feels like

I don't know if BSG and Betrayal are that far from "beginner games", I just think you may have sold them on one thing and then switched to something different. I'm not a beginner, and I'd rather play Ticket or Catan than BSG or Betrayal.

To be honest unless you are super into board game, most people will never move pass entry level game. My wife and her sister will never play anything more complicated than TTR or Splendor (and when I introduced them to Splendor there was a lot of eye rolling in regard to how much stuffs are on the table. . I got them to play Mission to Mar once but they never really got into it.

If you want to ease them into hidden role games why not try Coup, Resistance or One Night Ultimate Werewolf. I also got non- hobby gamers to play a lot of bluffing game like Sheriff of Nottingham.

Yeah i dunno, i think cooperative games are just not in their idea of games. All about competitions. So i think red dragon inn might be the next game i purchase but I'm not sure haven't played it myself yet
