Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 reviews and benchmarks

Danny Dudekisser

I paid good money for this Dynex!
My 1080 shipped, and I'm fuckin' stoked. It won't be here till Wednesday, but when it arrives, I guess it'll finally be time to try out The Witcher 3.

Why are you reading my tag instead of the title of my post?
I just went through the usual inquiry about when.. then told them I was dissatisfied. I was professional about it and all.
The CSR tried to show me that I could buy it from their marketplace for $1200 or whatever.. LOL
Basically just told them that others had been offered a 20% discount for the delay (true) and I quoted to them the bit of text where someone on Nowinstock.net had stated this. She requested the website link, so gave that. She tried to go back to the stupid $1200 marketplace scalpers to show that MSRP was some great price, etc.. and she didn't initially do anything, but said she'd escalate to verify what I was saying was true.
I had an e-mail from the escalation in like an hour reducing my FTW card to this:
Holy cow!
Edit: Will embed the image properly later, didn't know a tiff wouldn't work and it's chow time.
Call or chat?

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?

I did chat and got a $5 credit. I didn't complain, cause I know it's probably more Nvidia's fault than Amazon's. That said, if another week passes, I'll call and request more.

I did chat.

I wasn't going to make a huge deal out of it, and I was content with them doing nothing. I got a bit less content when she started linking $1200 cards to me as some sort of indication that I was already getting an amazing deal. That was annoying.

That being said, I've been on the wrong end of several ugly Amazon situations, so I don't feel like I'm taking advantage of them. In fact I'm not sure I'll ever even receive the card. I'm also not a big fan of companies treating various customers in different ways when the situation is all the same.

Most of the FUD around the FE model is from people who haven't used one. I liked mine.

Sure, there's a $100 Nvidia tax, but other than that the card is fine.

Pretty much. Overclock is just as good, or better, on my FE than what I'm seeing from people with custom cards. The blower fan is actually less annoying than my 980 ti FTW is at higher fan speeds and I'm peaking at like 71c. I had planned to step up the card to an AXC card from Evga, but unless the 3.0's are improved from the 9 series I might just keep what I have.

I dont believe you're getting 71c temps unless you're only running a game for 5mins. All the reviews i've seen it going over 80c.

Played overwatch for a couple of hours and my temps hovered around 73. Also played witcher 3 for about 45 minutes or so and pretty much same result.

Were you playing at 1080p? My card was running really hot playing Overwatch at 4K. Wondering if anyone else is getting that.

Because the default fan profiles suck and that's what reviews are using. I can play Witcher 3, Doom, Overwatch, whatever... that's my peak.

Probably only running short benchmarks and is used to mom vacuuming the house while on the computer? :p

I actually own my own home and have been playing games for hours at a time, no need for your douchy snark.

So you are content with paying $100 over an already inflated MSRP on top of having to adjust fan curves to mini-vac levels to still top out in the lower to mid 70's? That's cool, man. That's cool. :)

Just like you're content to whine in post after post about these cards?

I paid the $100 because I didn't want to wait another month and one of the perks of being an adult with a decent paying job is that $100 is less important than a month of enjoyment of my hobby.

Every card I've ever owned I've used a custom fan profile, this isn't specific to this particular card. And as I mentioned, the fan sound isn't as distracting as my 980 ti FTW which uses Evga's ACX 2.0. This is from Tom's 1080 review btw:

The 1080's acoustic profile is really pleasant. It’s a nice broad whooshing/airflow noise, and the fan’s motor can never really be picked out. This is a lot better than the cheap axial fans that AMD used to put on its reference designs (and that some partners still use). In comparison, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080’s noise is tolerable.

I've got a second 1080 coming through step up and I'll see if the ACX 3.0 sounds better than the 2.0. If so I can always step up this FE as well, but all the teeth gnashing about temps and sound with the FE are most certainly overblown by people like yourself who have never even seen one, much less done any gaming on them.

I agree with you 100%. It's been a month already, and you practically still can't get an AIB card. Yet, I've been enjoying the performance for a measly $100 extra. I actually liked the blower noise, this thing is a lot quieter than ACX 2.0 cards I've had.

Just threw my FE on water today, but I had no issues with the reference blower.

Damn do I love Craigslist. All three for $600 a piece. Apparently he has a lot more in stock...somehow.
If anyone is close to NYC, I can pass along his info if you're still waiting to get one.

So the Gaffer came through and I now have the option to buy a Zotac FE 1080 at $600. These things have manufacturer warranties in case something goes wrong right? Not like I can return it to the store in 2 months in case the card burns out...

"Products must be purchased as new from an authorized ZOTAC reseller. Warranty only applies to the original purchaser of the product and cannot be transferred. Products purchased as secondhand or used, or from auction sites, do not carry any warranty."

I've half asked this before, but is there any noticable real world performance impact from the 1080 having lesser features than the 980 Ti? Talking about stuff like fewer shader units, slower memory bus, etc.

EDIT: Additionally, which 1080 is currently leading in performance/overclocking?

I don't know any category where the 980ti would beat the 1080. And from what I've seen the MSI Gaming X has had the highest benchmarks. But I would imagine the STRIX OC and FTW are very close.

The 1080 wins across the board due to brute force with higher clocks and GDDR5X. There's no real-world disadvantage for the 1080. I guess the 980 Ti overclocks a little better, but even a max OC'd 980 Ti isn't gonna touch to a stock 1080.

Thanks for the benchmarks man, just compared to my own card and it seems like the difference is around 15% from my GTX 980 Ti to your GTX 1080. Had the upgrade itch but I am not spending $400+ for a 15% performance increase lol.

The number of units aren't important, the resulting peak throughput is important. The only metric in which 980Ti is faster than 1080 is peak memory bandwidth but this is completely compensated by a better memory controller (more advanced compression and larger L2).

And as for leading in performance / OC - it's a lottery, most AIB cards seems to be on the same level initially and your results will vary depending on what GPU you will get. The fastest card out of the box is probably Galax HOF at the moment but I'm not sure if it's even selling yet.

I'm glad someone else has this issue and it's not just me, I am having the same problem. 86-87 deg at times. It runs fine on other games.

Whatever makes you feel better, man. I have patience and can wait to know I didn't pay an unnecessary tax only to have a card that has to have a "pleasant acoustic whoosh" when I play any game that's not Overwatch in 1080p. Please don't tell me you're at stock settings either, a card should be considered completely busted if you have to touch those profiles if you're not applying decent overclocks.

I'd rather be able to do more with the card in the future, while getting desired performance out of the card, all the while not living in a miniature airport when that time comes. But the acoustics right? :p

After a week of waiting, having built myself a new PC, finally in stock at my local store.

Gigabyte G1, immediately hit the add to cart.

Checked it again and out of stock. I must have gotten the last one.

Im now $1139 poorer but I cant wait to experience PC gaming again.

Yeah after a match or two the temp is consistently 85-87 when playing Overwatch at 4K. Wonder if its just my cooler being not that great or what. It happened playing Battlefield 4 at 4k too it ran at like 88-90. But then the next day I played a lot of BF4 again and it stayed at the normal 70-75 range the entire time. Overwatch though is always running hot.

Will definitely take a look at cleaning dust out if my system. Maybe the airflow just isn't good and I do live in Florida, so my room is fairly hot.

This guy. Why the need to act like a total self-righteous asshole? Live and let live, man. If he bought an FE card, is happy with it, thinks it's worth the extra $100 to be able to game for a month+ without waiting, and is fine with the noise levels, who are you to tell him he's wrong and to constantly berate him about it? Let it go. The card he decided to go with is no concern of yours.

Thank you to you and other people like you that have set the precedent. My person did the same thing and saw that the price on the store was $1800 and that it wouldn't ship until August and we both agreed that it an unacceptable solution. I went through the rest of the typical spiel and when they asked if there was anything else they could do I just up and said that other people were getting discounts for their order. The CSR then went to her manager and came back 2 minutes later with news that once it shipped I'd be refunded 20% of the order. So, ~$138-ish. She also said they'd e-mail me once they receive the item to distribute.

Guys do it. And do it before they get an ETA for you.
I see you're a the first stage

Anyone here have experience with Zotac and EVGA. My last two cards were EVGA.

I've read the AMP Extreme is really really good on reddit. I have the AMP not extreme edition and it seems on par with cards like the G1 gaming. Pretty happy with it and I like how it looks.

After buying myself a displayport cable so I could hook up both my monitors at the same time I checked the idle clocks and it's down at 215MHz for me. And that's with the same monitors (one 144Hz and one 60Hz) I used with my 970 that always ran at like 1200MHz when both monitors were connected.

So weird that everyone is getting different results.
