Considering you can get these in central and north Georgia as well, that means there is zero reason to go to south Georgia.

True, but
just like the sweet tea, they make it pretty special down there. Everything else can eat shit though.

As a Californian, I found them to be absolutely delicious during my trip to South Carolina and Georgia a few years back. We were constantly stopping at roadside vendors and gas stations to pick some up. We ran across a few rare batches that were terrible, but luckily the first batch we had was perfect, so I knew what kind of flavor they were capable of. They are basically similar to eating cooked beans. So good.

Now i want some boiled peanuts. Thankfully I live in the Highlands, and DBA BBQ has some damn good ones.

Best boat food. Hot boil peanut. Also you can get different favors. Best time to buy is late summer. Thats when the "big ones" are green

A little late to the thread here... but checking in from Mississippi.
It's strange to me that these aren't common :)
My mother still boils them regularly during the summer.

Boiled Peanuts are the best. I like 'em nice and spicy and you gotta suck the juice out of the shell before you crack them open.
Seems strange to me, as someone from the south, that people haven't heard of them or think they sound weird.

So.....you buy raw in-shell peanuts and boil them in salted water?

Do you just serve them in-shell for people to crack and eat? Should they be eaten hot or cold?

Yes. Hot.

You have to boil them for hours though. And the water has to be saltier than you think. Lots and lots and lots of salt.

Hot. No cracking needed, more like peeling because the shell is so soft.
Sometimes they throw seasoning into the water for added taste. Boiled Cajun peanuts and a spicy pickle is the perfect road trip snack when traveling thru the south.

My dad loves peanuts and I'm super allergic. To answer the question, "yes." Didn't think it was a regional thing.

Comically, thanks to this thread, I am boiling peanuts right now.

The sweet ones are something of a delicacy here in Japan. Last time I was buying some, a couple celebrities walked into the store with a film crew and started guzzling samples

Serve them in-shell - there is no cracking. The shells come off very easily.
Best served warm - fine cold.

Love me some side of the road Boiled Peanuts. I never make them myself because you need to boil them for hours.

I'm from outside of Chicago and am visiting my brother in Athens, GA. I told him it was mandatory we get boiled peanuts, after remembering this thread.

On the way to Lake Oconee we got some. I thought they were delicious! My bro's take was that they were weak-ass and can be found better elsewhere. Apparently the boil wasn't flavored at all?

All I know now is I want some Cajun boiled peanuts!

Anyone know of any good places to get boiled peanuts in or around Athens?

Down here in Florida (well, with many of us blacks in Florida who are still southern, can't speak for the white people here) they are a staple food. We like them paired with potatoes and corn with some cajun spice on them. Couldn't believe my ears when I went to the Army and found out they weren't a "thing" in other parts of the country.

I had them when I went to a wedding in North Carolina last year. They're ok. Not something I would exactly crave, but not something to make me drench the walls with vomit either.
