Jill Stein on vaccines: People have ‘real questions’

"I think there’s no question that vaccines have been absolutely critical in ridding us of the scourge of many diseases — smallpox, polio, etc. So vaccines are an invaluable medication," Stein said. "Like any medication, they also should be — what shall we say? -- approved by a regulatory board that people can trust. And I think right now, that is the problem. That people do not trust a Food and Drug Administration, or even the CDC for that matter, where corporate influence and the pharmaceutical industry has a lot of influence."

Stein's warning about corporate influence in the vaccine approval process is often voiced by "anti-vaxxers." In reality, most members of the Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee work at academic or medical institutions, not drug companies. But for Stein, the fact that people saw corporate and lobbying influence running rampant meant that some skepticism was warranted.

…

Stein went on to explain that she'd studied the value of vaccines and come out with questions.

"As a medical doctor, there was a time where I looked very closely at those issues, and not all those issues were completely resolved," Stein said. "There were concerns among physicians about what the vaccination schedule meant, the toxic substances like mercury which used to be rampant in vaccines. There were real questions that needed to be addressed. I think some of them at least have been addressed. I don’t know if all of them have been addressed."

The point, she said, was that the voters who doubted that government could be trusted to make clear decisions, without meddling by lobbyists, needed to be heard. Even when it came to vaccines.

Who knew when Hillary said that she believed in science she'd be calling out the Green Party as well.

Jill Stein should be ashamed of herself for helping to create public health problems.

Well it's good for the world vaccines don't just exist in some bubble that surrounds America.

Maybe Jill Stein should look for her answers in European, Asian or African countries. African ones especially.

Yep. Anyone of the Bernie Bros who talk about how they're going third-party are clearly not aware or not interested in what the third-party candidates stand for, because they both hold opinions that are straight-up crazy or antithetical to progressive ideas. Johnson believes that nothing should be done about guns, and opposes Roe V. Wade, Stein is an anti-vax physician with as much political experience as I have.

Jill Stein can fuck right off with this anti vaxxer nonsense.

?????

Hearing that Jill Stein was an anti-vaxxer (in the "vaccines cause autism" way) immediately stopped me from ever considering to vote for her. If you believe that, then I know you are ignoring reality and you don't know when something has been proved false over and over again.

A friend of mine pointed out that 2 out of the 4 presidential candidates are anti-vaxxers, since Trump has voiced some support for it as well. What a fucking joke.

What fucking incentive would there be for pharmaceutical companies to be lax about the composition of their vaccines to the point where they'd need to bribe to CDC and FDA

edit: it looks like people are misunderstanding what she's saying. It doesn't sound like she's anti-vax, more like anti-government. She's calling the CDC and FDA into question. On what grounds though is beyond me.

2 of the 4 major presidential candidates question vaccines. Think about that a bit. Let that sink in.

Wait, what questions haven't been addressed? I feel like there's so much information out there about anything anyone wants to know about vaccines to the point where there are literally zero questions left.

Come on guys, she's clearly trying to enhance our civil liberties here.

Every child should have the right to die from a terrible disease that we've already contained, right?

Vaccines might do some shit, but, you should be warry of the la li lu le lo and "unanswered questions".

Basically she's giving an inch to unhealthy skepticism and this is coming from someone with a skeptical mind.

You can be anti-government or corporation without sowing seeds of unnecessary and potentially dangerous doubt.

She's pandering to the anti-science progressive left, and while she may not personally hold the view that vaccines are dangerous, pandering to dangerous crazies is just as harmful to our scientific culture.

Besides, we KNOW she holds anti-science views on GMO already. So vaccines aren't exactly a stretch.

She should be blaming anti-vaxxers for the trust issues. Then again this is the same person who wants to shut down nuclear power plants because they're weapons of mass destruction. She's a bit nutty.

I can't stand anti Vax people. They hurt so many on account of "questions" and straight out FUD... most of all children and the elderly.

That alone makes her inneligible to me for any kind of office, from local school board to President.

Her statement is structured so that she essentially says "vaccines are good BUT do we trust the people approving them? There used to be terrible stuff in there but they were made better, but do we know everything?"

She's very voluntarily ambiguous.

I don’t know if all of them have been addressed.
Typically, this is textbook FUD.

Is Obama really a Christian? Was he really born in Hawaii?

People have ‘real questions’.

This line is so cowardly and disgusting, meaning nothing.

Jill Stein should be ashamed of herself for helping to create public health problems.

Green Party has never cared much about the preponderance of scientific evidence. Just one example: their platform was pro-homeopathy until three months ago.

I'm not sure how someone can read the full article in the OP and come to the conclusion that she's anti-vax. She immediately refutes that and then spends the rest of the response explaining part of the reason why some people (who unfortunately constitute far to much of the Green's electorate) came to their incorrect conclusions about vaccines.
