(post copied over from the screenshot thread to avoid going off topic)

I'm interested in the "science" too!

Reddit link. Instead of counting pixels though, I recreate a scale model of the planet+camera in a 3D modeling program. Here's an example using a screenshot from today's stream:

The sphere I used to model this has a diameter of 2 units and is 15.801 units away from the camera. Since NMS shows the distance to the surface not the distance to the center, you just need to subtract 1.

Then it's as simple as in_game_distance/model_distance*2=diameter in game units.
761,051 Ks/14.801*2=102,836 meter diameter or ~100 Km since it's not completely accurate.

This is the largest planet I've calculated a size for: ~250 Km
Awesome thinking. The moon has a diameter of 3,474 km so these at least are more like "earth-continent-sized" planets. But, there may be a huge variation with outliers being closer to actual-planet size.

30 FPS is completely fine as long as the game is smooth. Don't even know why FPS is such a big deal, but then again I enjoyed Just Cause 3 lol.

Easy to please I guess.
Because 60 looks and feels excellent. The responsiveness, and overall motion of things cant be beat. But there's so much tech happening, (like real time lighting) I'm not surprised they went with 30. PC players are going to fucking love this at 4K.

With so much talk if post patch support I'm just going to wait til they are done adding everything to the game before I play it.

It's a double edged sword for me. On one side I just want to dive in right away with everybody else, but then I will probably get tired of it before any new content comes out. I don't replay games that much and I often don't buy DLC for games I've already played through, so playing NMS through once will probably be the only time I play it.

It's all about that first time experience for me. Enjoy the game for what it is now, or wait when all that juicy content makes it "better"?

I wouldn't last a single fucking day, gimme this game now!

So we still have conflicting reports if it's 30 or 60? Sigh.

Being 30 makes the wait more bearable tbh.

I've played 10 hours. From about 2 seconds after I was given control of the camera it was obvious that it was 30fps. You just pan the reticle left and right and you can see it immediately. There are no tricks, or weird new technologies hiding this. It feels like any other 30fps game, input lag included. Destiny has been mentioned and that's a good reference point for how this feels.

I'm honestly baffled as to why people are having a hard time spotting this.

I am sure - just sucks they have to wait until Friday.

Will this be ready to play at midnight eastern tonight? I just purchased it from the PlayStation Store. I haven't been reading any related material for weeks now. After buying it tonight the Store now says the game is playable in 6 hours....I don't see my PS4 downloading the game though.

The thirst is real. Am I playing this at midnight tonight or cursing myself to sleep?

The VR dream is dead then. Although judging by the FOV complaints it might not be suitable anyway (that and all the walking around).

Still, outside wanting to play in VR it honestly doesn't bother me that much that it's 30.

We still get theatre mode it's something anyway

You can download it, and the patch. I don't know how to make it start on your machine but poke around.

I'm still unsure if GAF allows talk about VPN tricks but that's how I got it for PC for $39.99USD on GoG. I won't give direct details incase it isn't but just search for Witcher 3 VPN trick and its the same.

Pretty bummed about the PC release date. Having a mental debate about whether I will wind up buying this game twice to play it a few days early.

Guys, any comparison vids of pre and post patch?

Or just post? I have seen some pre patch so hopefully the post is quite the improvement.

If you want spiritual company, I have technically bought this game three times to play it a few hours early.

Alright fine. I normally don't pre-order and some of the stuff from before the patch kinda turned me off, but these new streams completely sold me on the game.

Take my money.

How does that even work with updates and stuff?

So can you find a really great planet and name it and then blog about it and then other players can try to find it too? Can you give people coordinates for the planet to make it easier to find?

How long does it take to fly across the galaxy?

Does everyone start in the same place?

So much hope and optimism about PC port, weird. I'm on GAF right? People usually are cynical as hell about ports that we know absolutely nothing about.

Edit: Saw options menu for PC port above, nice!

Has anyone heard yet just how big of a ship we can acquire? I know there is different sizes with different storage capacities. But just how big can we eventually get, outta curiosity?

You can thank that godlike programming & procedural generation. It's pretty damn amazing what they've already accomplished with this game lol.

I'm not sure how big they can currently get, but in the next update they are aiming to add freighter sized ships.

Is it cheating to smelter demon after old iron king ? :x Smelter demon was rock

A cool concept to this game would be the creatures you find you name them and release them on google maps and have a POKEMON GO type of experience but with NO MAN's SKY. They should make that app, it would be a great way to experience the title outside of the title.

I wonder why it took so long to get a definitive answer like this lol

Every time someone with functional eyes says it's 30, someone else with no clue claims otherwise. It's annoying when people are trying to make a decision on which format to get. I ordered the PS4 version on Friday when I thought it was 60.
