Puyo Puyo Chronicle, a Puyo Puyo puzzle RPG, is in development for 3DS, the latest issue of Weekly Famitsu reveals. It will launch on December 8 in Japan at 5,490 yen for the standard edition and 9,490 yen for an “Anniversary Box” edition.

The 25th anniversary celebration title of the Puyo Puyo puzzle series’, Puyo Puyo Chronicle offers an “RPG Mode” where characters Arle and Carbuncle take on the role of protagonists.

The story of RPG Mode sees Arle sucked into the world of a book, and in order to return to her original world, she sets off on a journey with a mysterious girl named Allie. You’ll be able to freely explore 3D fields, and in addition to the main story, there are more than 60 sub-quests being prepared. The game promises a story of large volume.

[...]

RPG Mode isn’t the only mode in Puyo Puyo Chronicle, however. You can also play standard Puyo Puyo. There are 17 types of popular rules you can play, including “Tsu” and “Fever.” Additionally, there is a local battle mode called “Boss Battle with Everyone” where up to four players can cooperatively battle a boss. It uses the RPG Mode’s battle system as its base, and introduces a “Chance Time” system where by meeting certain conditions you can enter Fever Mode to deal great damage.

Mock at me if old.

I've read the press release so is RPG mode puyo puyo gameplay (like it was in Puyo Puyo Box...and ugh an RPG with Puyo Puyo matches as random battles gets to be a drag until you level up somewhat) or something different. The ending pasragraph about classic puyo puyo and boss battles using the RPG mode system with fever mode chance time just baffles me.

Puzzle RPG? So is the "main" mode using Puyo Puyo Quest (the mobile game) gameplay, or...?

This being 3DS exclusive is surprising.

For what it's worth, it wouldn't be unprecedented for this series to release a Nintendo handheld version first and follow up with ports to everything else at a later date.

huh, and i thought a puyo 25th like the previous anniversary games was a lock. guess that puyo quest money is good

just hoping the puzzle part is still as full featured as recent releases!

This is cool. The 3DS version of Puyo Puyo Tetris is evidently where Sonic Team spent most their time on, so hopefully this game is graced with the same incredible attention to detail across the interface, visuals and layered 3D effect.

Didn't the Puyo series start out as an RPG?
Sort of.

The characters were part of a dungeon RPG series (Madou Monogatari); they were later repurposed for Puyo Puyo.

Essentially, it would be like if you asked "Didn't the Dr. Mario series start out as a platformer?"

So the 3DS version of Puyo Puyo Tetris is the better version or one Sonic Team themselves worked on while the other versions were ported out? Hmm, might have to change those import plans...

And Happy 25th Puyo Puyo. Always was MY puzzle game since Mean Bean Machine.

There is a conspicuous lack of mention of online netplay, so this might be very non-traditional as far as Puyo games go

Also I like how the spinoff of the spinoff returned to the original genre

What did they do recently?

Even the fusion of Puyo Puyo with Tetris wasn't enough to bring it over.

it's not really an "even" considering tetris's exclusive publishing rights in the west (as i understand it) would make it even more of a hassle than usual

sega's western branches been publishing a lot more "niche" japanese stuff lately like the miku games, 7th dragon and dengeki bunko, in addition to two releases of puyo (in project mirai dx and sega 3d classics collection) in the past year. i don't think this game is going to get localized, mind, it's just a bit more likely than it's been in the past

Yup. It's a great example of a bespoke version of a multiplatform game built for specialised hardware. They didn't just shrink down the console image to a smaller upper screen like with the Vita version, instead everything about the game was rethought and redesigned around the dual screens, right down to the most throwaway menus and interface, and it feels really special as a result.

The 3D is phenomenal, as the visuals are actually rendered in 3D space, rather than as fixed 2D layers. Dialogue scenes and the crazy warp fields in Big Bang mode look a treat - there's actual, true 3D depth here, from the star formations in the sky to the way Puyo blocks squish together when they fall.

In a way it's a good reflection of the Japanese market. You've got the combination of 3DS having highly specialised hardware that wouldn't fit the other versions of the game, and the 3DS install base providing motivation for Sonic Team and Sega to put the effort and budget into making that version as good as possible.

Also interesting: the PS Vita version's code includes 3DS shader binaries and other references to the 3DS version.

If you're importing the game I'd probably go PS4/XBO on console and 3DS for the handheld. Apparently the 3DS version also has the most active userbase for online. Like the other versions it also has cross-platform multiplayer, but with the Wii U version. Though I doubt that bolsters the numbers by much!

Yeah, Atlus USA did localise the Puyo Puyo minigame in Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX for 3DS, also using it as a key marketing point for the game on websites etc.

And the resources are there now that Sega of America uses Atlus USA for localisation purposes of their own IP.

I guess it *could* happen, though the game's RPG roots probably means a more expensive localisation process overall.

I'm also hoping Nyoki Nyoki gets released internationally. It's a "Nindies" game at least for 3DS, and the eShop supports the IARC international ratings system, so it might actually happen!

OK before you guys start thinking SEGA US just hates puyo or something:

Back during SEGA US's 3D classics collection stream, Sam Mullen (localization producer) mentioned that basically no one at their office worked on a Puyo game before, so they weren't familiar at all with the series. So presumably, that's the real reason why the localizations weren't happening.

SEGA US is a lot different now, and Sam's shown interest in learning more about the puyo series.

Sega didn't even direct port the Puyo game for mobile. They renamed it and completely changed the assets to some food themed thing.

If we can get Puzzles and Dragons and Langrisser there's a chance we can get this too.
I just wish I could learn to play Puyo Puyo cause I suck at it.

it's a puyo puyo game, we haven't had one localised in like what 10 years?

Earlier this year if you count the Sega 3D Classics Collection, which includes Puyo Puyo Tsu. Also Project Mirai DX included a Puyo game. :V

Anyway, considering that they've recently been localizing more games like Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax and 7th Dragon III, I'd say there's a better chance of them localizing a game like this now than there was before.

Well, I think the last good version in terms of theming was the GBA Puyo Pop version, anyway... I really don't like the redesign that happened with Fever, I far prefer the Monogatari cast :/

If you want to increase the chances of localization, try bugging the SEGA/ATLUS localization directors on Twitter @sam_mullen @JohnLHardin . Looks like there's a small movement springing up around the hashtag #PuyoChroniclesfortheWest

I imagine just bugging @SEGA would be enough, I don't think spamming the notifications of their personal accounts would do much more than annoy them.

3DS only is a bummer because of the region lock thing. Luckily Sega is pretty good with bringing Puyo to everything (in Japan) so there will likely be other versions next year.

Edit: I guess I could go full optimist and hope for a western release (Puyo Puyo 2 got released/No Tetris license conflict), but right now I'm just happy there's a new game.

Famitsu's got some screens. Wasn't expecting the 3D, lol. I guess it looks alright? Would still prefer it stuck with the Fever style for portraits and stuff but I'd imagine that'll all still be present.

edit: actually i just got famitsu and even the promo art is using the 3d models ehhhhhhhh

There's new scans out that show the new character character "Arie", a 3DS wallpaper, and how the RPG mode works.
