Just goes to show how much a good art director helps some artists. I also think feedback from group commissions is like yelling into a void. Everyone wants something different and most of it is shit.

I've found the actual commissioners are, 99% of the time, trying to cater to the artist as opposed to the group and the piece being commissioned. I've seen plenty of good and positively constructive feedback get put down for super vague reasons.

Also, timeframes are a joke. I understand artists have other priorities, but to be off by several months with no updates, that's kind of a joke.

A lot of artists don't seem to take it seriously. It's basically the idea of they think they have a normal job, and this is the thing they do on weekends when they have time. The best ones I've been in is when it starts and it's finished within a week or two, and some artists are great with that. The ones that don't however are awful. Most of these groups you're waiting sometimes over a year to start, we're paying a lot of money for this. Just do the work.

Sometimes it is really ridicolous. Sure sometimes the schedule is full and from the beginning you know it will take some time befor it is even starting. But when you paid the artist fee and they provided an scetch. And then you wait and wait and wait.

Don't ever get in a Stan and Vince commission. Man do I regret it. It's been ages and they have done ZERO work as far as I can tell. November 2015 was deadline for first payment. I think I've paid around $100 already, as have the other 100 members of the group. This is all that we've seen to date:

I mean, I'm sure it'll be great when ti's done, but at this rate it's gonna be a two year project at minimum. That's asinine IMO.

I'm also in a Stan and Vince commission that's half finished (literally half finished...the print has full detail minus several sections).

Holy shit I'm sorry thats crazy but I'm not surprised.

Truer words.

I'm in the "Edge of Tomorrow" commission group, which I paid for in October of 2014 and we're still not done with the artwork for the regular version, let alone the variant artwork or the separations and printing. Nightmare.

Yeah this one has been a huge joke almost 2yrs has turned out to be the worst commission ever. Putting the nail in the coffin for me I'm done with artist delays and commissions being on the back burner with endless excuses as to why they can't finish promptly. Its a real shitty practice in the community.

So after an artist gets paid, is there any way to recoup the money for the group if the artist is just being negligent and awful?

Also, how often have y'all gotten the "artist is moving right now, so they're gonna need more time." excuse?

Once they are paid everyone is SOL really, the commissioner who collected payments would be screwed if people put in claims its not their fault. There is no contract either so its really just up in the air.

I personally haven't got the moving excuse usually its just "I had 5 projects pop up with tight deadlines sorry" type of stuff. Main reason I stopped liking Whalen and a few other artists. Treat your fans like shit soon they forget you.

Haven't framed either yet, but I love the Ash Thorp Grey Fox prints too.

Looking forward to a few others as well! Bummer that some commissions go so far south though.

I'm glad I never really got on the commission train

Well to be fair, there's some terrific stuff. Sometimes you get the wheat, sometimes the chaff :).

I got a fantastic Galaxy Quest poster, and I've got two amazing Ise Anaphada Princess Bride posters coming. The good has far outweighed the bad so far.

Yes. yes you should.

All of my knowledge of it is based on the various print releases for it. So here's what I know: potentially cute rabbits. Then danger and maybe horrible things.

Holy shit.... One of my good friends is getting married in Austin (we're all from ND/MN) and is renting a house for all her close freinds to stay at 10/20-10-23. It didn't even occur to me there was a possiblity of Mondo con overlap.... Just bought tickets. Think I can skip the ceremony and just hit the reception? haha

Up close, that piece is kind of terrible. The floating quotes and sloppy title and completely faceless figures--dang. I'm sure it'll sell out, but dang.
