Oculus' Palmer Luckey funds white-supremacist/misogynistic/anti-lgbt harassment group

Cheers to whoever updated the thread title, its important that people realize that the group was toxic for everyone, and not just people that might be turned off by its support for white supremacy.

Does anyone remember the cringey Palmer handshake gif? Maybe it was a secret KKK greeting thang right in front of our eyes?

Saw this Kotaku piece getting reactions from some devs. Some interesting reactions.

Insomniac Games, creator of top Oculus title Edge of No Where, told Kotaku in an e-mail that they “condemn all forms of hate speech,” adding that, “this behavior and sentiment does not reflect the values of the many Oculus employees we work with on a daily basis.” They did not respond to our question about whether Luckey’s support for a Trump-centric organization affects their interest in future Oculus-based products.

Smaller studios led the push against Oculus support. On Twitter last night, VR studio Tomorrow Today Labs described Palmer Luckey’s actions as “unacceptable.” As long as Luckey is involved with Oculus, Tomorrow Today Labs told Kotaku in an e-mail, they won’t be supporting the Oculus Touch for their Newton VR or upcoming products. Similarly, Scruta Games, which also develops for VR, said that, until Luckey steps down, they’ll be cancelling Oculus support for their games.

“It’s not about ‘politics,’” they wrote on Twitter, “it’s about the face of a company financially backing racist trolls.”

Some developers who were exploring Oculus support, but didn’t have concrete plans to pursue it, have expressed abated interest in the VR headset. Augustin Cordes has considered his horror game Asylum a good fit for Oculus, but told Kotaku in an e-mail that he’ll be holding off pursuing Oculus support until “the situation with Luckey is resolved.”

SoundStage VR, a “music instrument sandbox built specifically for roomscale virtual reality,” has said that all SoundStage profits for the next day will be contributed to Hillary Clinton’s campaign.

I think I would prefer Palmer giving 10 million dollars to Trump directly than funding alt-right-8chan shitposting and Milo. That is the worst thing in culture right now.

The weirdest part about whole is thing to me is that Luckey is actually paying people to shitpost.

And yet it's these same people that continuously whine and claim that the left has "paid shills" any time someone doesn't agree with their extreme views. I don't know which would be sadder, knowing hypocrisy, or just pure idiotic lack of self-awareness.

Well what can he say? "I was hacked?"

How about something? Anything? Radio silence on the whole matter isn't exactly working in his favor.

This is going to do some damage to Oculus stocks and It will be interesting to see how many points they will drop on the market come Monday morning.

I don't think he should be hated for his beliefs. Just his actions.

That is all.

So, like funding a bunch of bullshit propaganda attacking people?

Just to be clear.

I'm not pissed that he is voting Trump or encouraging other people to do so. I'm pissed that he is pouring millions into what I see as hateful and untrue adverts. Eurgh. Come on Facebook. Do the right thing already.

So believing what he does is ok as long as he doesn't start lynching people? Or am I misunderstanding. I mean I know I took the bait but I want to make sure I am understanding it right.

They would want to bury firing him too. Getting this stain away from the company as quietly as possible is the prerogative

That's definitely true, but it is incredibly hard to simply fire an executive in a day if that person doesn't want to leave. It will be an ugly lawyer fight that would generally take a while.

I suppose that he could agree to resign, but that doesn't seem probably to me.

I'd be fine with that. There's no way to prove what someone believes if they never act upon those beliefs. Obviously, in practical terms, this would never happen, but if a person secretly held prejudiced beliefs, but never voiced them, acted upon them, or let them influence their actions, then no harm is done.

In reality, though, I don't think there is anyone who doesn't act on their beliefs.

It's not bait. It's simply my belief that you shouldn't hate on people for their beliefs. And yes. If he were not harming anyone by having these beliefs then it shouldn't matter.

Would you consider funding a group to be a belief or an action?

I don't get what you're trying to do here. That's obviously an action. Therefore take issue with it.

But it does harm people, these beliefs aren't in a vacuum. Especially when he's using money to push these beliefs.

What if those beliefs involve inherent hatred of you, as a person, given your sexual orientation, or gender, or religion, or ethnicity/heritage? Would you still be making that statement?

As long as the person isn't trying to harm me in some way I wouldn't care if they had those thoughts. In Palmers case he is clearly trying to harm people.

I wasn't trying to attack you or trap you, just wanted clarification. Some people (some of them even being Supreme Court justices) classify money as speech. I just wanted to know where you stood on that.

I don't vehemently disagree with your stance. We could quibble here and there, but this thread isn't the place for that.

surely you're not dense enough to not understand that propagating (and in this case funding) bigoted and dangerous beliefs do in fact harm people, in both the short and long term? surely? come on

christ this thread is one for the ages. i'm not sure if it's just a bunch of teens on gaming side having difficulty understanding the real world or whatever, it's fucking disappointing that's what
