Grim Misadventure #101: The Loot Hunt Continues

In total, v1.0.0.6 will bring you 28 all new Legendary items, and over 90 revised Epic Items, which should greatly spice up what you may be looking for when gearing out your max level characters!

As is standard procedure here at Crate, we’re not stopping there. V1.0.0.7 will come before the end of the year with a brand new Aetherial themed roguelike dungeon, absolutely brimming with lore, monster infrequents and new dangers to discover.

Beyond that...I hear rumors of a certain expansion that’s actively in development.

7 new sets??? I've yet to complete even one. The best I have is 3 pieces on a few. The new chaos caster set looks perfect for my Warlock as well...

And yay for looking at defensive options on purple rings

So I jumped pack in to check out 1.0.0.5 and it looks like they have balanced a bunch more stuff out. Especially in Ultimate, I didn't just get facerolled. Even managed to kill a random nemesis spawn.

Ran into this while browsing Humble Bundle. How powerful and fun are the summoner type classes? I love playing classes like the Witch Doctor from D3 since I can summon minions while melting demons with poison.

I really like my pet build but it's very item dependent because more than half my pets come from items. I haven't played D3, but if the Witch Doctor is anything like the D2 necromancer then it's not quite the same as Grim Dawn as you won't have a whole army of monsters from the skill tree alone.

I've heard that they can be really powerful even in final difficulty if you gear properly, but I can tell it first hand that they're incredibly fun and varied because 9 out of the 15 dual-classes have decent-to-great summoner type potential.
 
Grim Misadventure #102: The Monster Menagerie Grows

Grim Misadventures is back! Last week, patch v1.0.0.6 entered the testing phase, and it is on track for our late-September/early-October release timeframe. With this update, you will have 28 brand new items to hunt for as you battle across Cairn, or within Lokarr’s devious Crucible. In addition, over 90 Epic set items have been revised to better serve you as you hunt down Grim Dawn’s toughest foes. Beyond 1.0.0.6, we have an Aetherial roguelike in the works for v1.0.0.7 that will introduce new challenges, new items and a veritable ton of new lore to discover. All this is coming to all owners of Grim Dawn for free.

But that’s not all we’ve been working on here at Crate. An entire expansion has been in the works for some time now, and today we are pleased to begin unveiling some of what’s in store for you in Grim Dawn’s first expansion.

On a bit of a break for now, but I'll be back when the Aetherial dungeon comes out.

Really looking forward to the expansion as well. I'd be willing to bet a dollar that we'll be heading north of Burrwitch up to the overrun capital to deal with the Aetherials. You can see on the world map there's what looks like a ruined city up there, which I'm tipping is (was) the capital. The new monster that lurks in the woods north of Burrwitch more or less confirms that we're heading that way. The amount of map space between the two points would be pretty much about right for expansion content too. As well as the fact that, despite starting as the main threat, we never really did deal with the Aetherials. They sort of took a back seat in the second half of the game.

And please Crate, can we have not one, but two more masteries? At least one of those with some Aether skills? Okthanksseeyoubye

About your first question: This is basically steampunk Titan Quest. The same developers.

About your second question: I think it supports Steam controller.

There's is controller support in the options, not 100% sure about Steam Controller specifically.

And yeah, it's basically a spiritual successor to Titan Quest with a few more bells and whistles.

I think ARPGs in general are a pretty easy genre to dive into. It has the benefit of slowly building complexity, so you start with just your normal attack and one skill, then over the course of a few levels you strengthen those skills and get new ones. Slowly your options in combat go from extremely narrow to wider and wider. This game also has some respec options, which almost automatically makes it much more forgiving than early games in the genre, because it allows you test skills you're interested in, but you won't be locked into having it forever if you don't enjoy playing with it.

I tried the controller support very briefly and didn't enjoy it. I think the game feels much better played with a mouse.

The games not really designed as an online experience, for better or worse. There is multiplayer, but that's designed to be done with friends and people you know. No matchmaking, or joining random games or anything of that nature. So based on that there's not really much of an online community, at least in the same way something like Diablo 3 has. Plenty of people still playing though, if the Steam charts are anything to go by

Being a small dev team, they decided against dedicated servers and the costs/maintenance that involves. Instead they opted to go the old school user generated content route and included some (from what I hear) quite robust modding tools. I've never tried any, but from what I here there's some pretty cool stuff out there

Just a FYI for all you incoming humble bundle nerds, the Crucible DLC is basically a standalone horde mode. It's not bad, but not connected to the campaign in any way.

Oh great, they've updated albrecht's aether ray damage by like 2x. I do like 51k dps at level 70.

Yikes! I saw that it was buffed (again) in the changelog. That sounds like a crazy amount. I have a Chaos Ray Warlock somewhere, that I'll need to log on and have a look at now

If you have a Blood Orb of Ch'thon lying around somewhere you can do aether-chaos damage ray.

Just checked too and I'm packing nowhere near those damage numbers at level 80. He's not completely optimized for dps though, and split between chaos and vita. For instance I use a Soulbearer as my weapon which is vita based. The vita component isn't completely wasted from disintegration and it instantly takes care of sustain issues with the ray. So much so, I was able to get rid all the ecto's I had to attach for more useful defensive stuff.

I'm also using 2 pieces of the clairvoyants, which gives me some chaos to aether conversion (around 20%) which isn't ideal but pretty much everything else on those pieces are...

Time to tinker more and find some of that new loots I think

The main trick is to stack up + skill on AAR, also having +1100% aether damage doesn't help either (devotions help a lot here). Just trying to catch up on chaos at the moment.

Yup. I actually found the offhand not long after that post

It's just not the same without Blood Orb of Ch'thon's Blood Rites which converts 100% of elemental damage to chaos, allowing you to do an aether/chaos AAR.

And pretty much this. I took a pretty big dps hit on the ray when I equipped the new orb. It also doesn't have cast speed (wtf!), which is a must for AAR. I think I mostly need more ranks in AAR and disintegration to bump the damage. I hear the untimate ranks scale pretty well. I'm only at 19 and 11 respectively with 10 more skill points to allocate so I should be able to get a little more out of it.

Something kind of amusing I did with that build was map Doom Bolt to left mouse, with Time Dilation attached, and AAR on right mouse. Accidental double Doom Bolts for everyone! I only did it because the game let me, and its not the sort of power you can usually map to mouse so I thought I would try it for the lols. It's actually kinda cool. The only downside is breaking boxes and doors and the like with it, if you don't remember to right click them instead.

Look everywhere, there's tons of little secret areas and extra quests. I never bought gear, but there's nothing wrong with that if you see something you fancy. Don't miss the devotion system, apparently some people have. Don't do a pets build until you have some decent gear.

You'll end up with a huge stockpile of components, hoard them like gold, you'll need them to craft stuff and complete shrines later on.

EDIT: Attack and cast speeds are capped at 200% skills are capped at +10, so don't go too crazy.

Good advice above. I'm bored so I'll add a couple of things.

- Regarding component advice above, when you have a completed component, some have equip-able skills that can be used at low levels that can trounce most of normal/veteran. A searing ember (which is very common) for instance gives you a fireball skill that should carry you through to elite. There's some other equivalents for other damage types as well like a poison bomb and an ice spike etc. They don't scale to well into higher difficulties but can be a big help in your first run

- Purchasing gear from vendors isn't really required, although the faction vendors have some level 70 gear that can be really good depending on the build. Its all green stuff still, but designed to fill holes in gear, and can be BiS depending on what you are doing.

- Regarding factions, there's not a whole lot of wrong choices you can make and they don't affect whole lot. There's one choice in the middle of the game which will lock out 1 set of quests and a vendor though, so make sure you speak to the npcs before deciding as they tell you what they will offer. There's also another decision late as well, but that one isn't quite as branching.

- If you head into elite difficulty and onwards start paying attention to resists. Its the fastest way to die ignoring them. Pierce and elemental damage types are all over the place, there's a tonne of poison in the early game and a tonne of chaos late, which will especially wreck your shit. The others are all useful as well, although if you have to leave one behind, aether (for the time being at least) isn't as important.

- Going back to the faction vendors, the best thing they sell are augments which can attach to your gear along with components and are the best way to round out your resists. There are two tiers of them available at level 50 and 70 and are pretty essential to surviving, especially in ultimate difficulty

- You will eventually get an npc that gives you the option to dismantle gear. Don't worry about it until you get have a nice haul of blues and purples that you don't need along with a nice stash of dynamite. You basically blow the gear up and the higher the rarity the better quality crafting mats you potentially get back. Dynamite is fairly rare, and needed to progress the main quest as well as access a few side areas, so keep what you find for those purposes first.

For items/gear etc, that's about all I can think of right now. Have fun!

Well shit. That more or less confirms 2 new masteries. I hoped, but didn't think it would happen. Adding classes in GD I imagine would be more work then other games of its ilk. Having to test all the new class combinations and making sure everything is as balanced as can be, and nothings completely OP that breaks the game would take quite a bit of time by itself.

Taking into account the small team that Crate is, its pretty damn impressive

Yeah necros sort of a no-brainer. There's already an order of them in game, and the whole play style would fit the game and the lore perfectly. Not sure where they would go with some sort of possessed devil dude, but could be interesting all the same.

And a while back they hinted at an aether dual-wield gunner class, which would make sense. Aether is under represented as a damage type, as is ranged dual wielding so more options there would be good.

Grim Misadventures here with another development update for Grim Dawn. Last time, we left you with another taste of the fiendish enemies awaiting you in Grim Dawn’s expansion. This time, we are going to look a bit closer on the timeline to the upcoming 1.0.0.7 update: The Fall of Port Valbury.

Some observant sleuths have already discovered the addition of four new achievements on Steam that mention this new area. Port Valbury is our upcoming Aetherial-themed roguelike dungeon, and it is absolutely packed with new lore, bosses and monster infrequents for you to discover.

Before we dig into today’s update though, let’s get the most important info out of the way: Port Valbury and the 1.0.0.7 update are expected to go into testing in the near future and, barring unexpected issues, you can look forward to their release mid-December!

The Fall of Valbury is our third roguelike dungeon, joining the esteemed ranks of the Steps of Torment and the Bastion of Chaos that came before it. This massive area is packed with new challenges, bosses, lore and of course loot.

New item affixes, some fixes/balances, and more in the link.

This game doesn't get the attention it deserves. It's so so good. Started a fresh character recently and loving it.
 
I don't play much anymore but i agree. It's a very good ARPG. I just don't know why it doesn't hold my attention like POE did.

I got 1300hrs in Grim Dawn but over 2200hrs in POE.

Next up(when it's done) WOLCEN.

I think it still does pretty well on steam etc, but yeah around here its kinda depressing. I've mentioned a few times how sad a 13 page OT in nearly a year, is for this sort of game on Gaf, but whatever...

If its eligible, which it should be, then I'll likely give a vote for Gaf game of the year when the thread goes up as well. Its easily my most played game this year. 900 hours or so, and I only bought it the day it was announced content complete earlier in the year.

Ahh. Wolcen. I grabbed the early access to that a few months back. Seems like its got some really cool ideas, and the graphics are really, really good for this genre. Two probs for me at the moment, is its still a little bare bones (at least when I last tried it) and I think I need to upgrade my graphics card. I was really struggling to run it, even on pretty low settings. Hopefully as development continues, it will be further optimized as well

Oh and my ratio of GD to PoE is sort of opposite to yours. A lot less PoE though

Do you care about 'seasons'? That's what keeps most people I know hooked on POE. Personally I don't care about that sort of thing and POE grew tired 'quick' (as in after a few hundred hours) with its gambling mechanics.
