It's a great time to be a fan of Japanese RPGs

I would consider TMS for Goty if it was a bit shorter. The last third just dragged oooooon and made some of the shortcomings too apparent. Still a great game though if you're looking for something Persona-ish

Yeah well I got SMT4: A AND 7th Dragon 3DS on the way to play on my 3DS.
Gonna get Pokemon Sun for around $40ish from my local shop along with Last Guardian when that breaks street date over here.
FF15 I'll play with my brother if he can be arsed to dedicate time to it :V

I just wish I had enough time to play the ones that were recently released to be honest. Next year is going to be crazy for Japanese games in general. Looking forward to 2017.

The Vita continues to be a treasure trove of weird niche Japanese RPGs, and I'm definitely loving how much we're getting on the PS4 now. Took Japan a little while to break out of the PS3 generation but they're starting to hit their stride!

I agree on all the praise for Tokyo Mirage, even if I still have a long way to go before finishing it. I should boot up the Wii U here soon....

With Final Fantasy XV, Persona 5, Nier Automata, Kingdom Hearts 3 and Dragon Quest XI, PS4 outclass PS3 eaaaasily in JRPG library.

Your forgetting about Tales of Berseria (PS4) coming to NA in Jan, Trails of Cold Steel II (Vita) dropped in Sept, World of FF (PS4/Vita) dropped in Oct, same for Exist Archive (PS4/Vita), so yeah, it's great to be an RPG fan right now!

Not to mention Ys VIII (PS4/Vita), DQ XI (PS4), and NNK2 (PS4) all planned (hopefully) for next year, so yeah hype!

Echoing what others have said Japanese games in general not just rpgs.

Running thru ffxv right now
Last guardian in a week
Gr2 January 20th
ReVii&kh 2.8 4 days later
Nioh in February
March has the kh collection.

This is just stuff I'm buying too there's so much more it's great

What high profile Japanese games are coming out next year?

RE7
Gravity Rush 2
Yakuza 0
Nioh
Kingdom Hearts 2.8
Nier Automata

And that's only the tip of the iceberg / Q1

If you want to get a bit more niche

Digimon
Tales of Berseria
Summon Night 6
Atelier Firis
Birthdays The Beginning
Dark Rose Valkyrie
God Wars Future Past

Ys VIII is probably next year as well. AND I haven't even touched handheld/PC only games.

No Vita/PC only games in the list. I could go on...

Nintendo is kind of in a separate category for me, as weird as that sounds, so I always forget to include them. We'll probably get a TON of those next year as well.

so tl;dr: There's a LOT coming out

Well, I finished Xenoblade Chronicles X, Bravely Second, Final Fantasy Explorers and Fire Emblem Fates this year, I'm balls deep in Pokémon Moon right now and I still have Tokyo Mirage Sessions sitting in the box. Not to mention there's still a bunch of 3DS and Steam RPG's I haven't bought yet.

Can't complain. If anything, I have to many games.

yep, NoA2 and Blue Reflection are very likely next year as well. And I want them

I really really hope Blue Reflection is good and the Sailor Moon RPG I imagine it to be

Persona 5 got delayed again to April so its not really coming that soon.

I want to get into PS3 JRPGs though I've been seeing a lot of new ones come out there.

I'm pretty happy with Digimon Cyber Sleuth ATM, gonna grab Persona 5 at release.

dunno about FFXV since ppl are saying the story is weak even though the world is amazing, I've experienced that kind of thing before with Xenoblade Chronicles X and just couldn't finish the game because everything aside from the open world was boring as hell.

Those games aren't made on FFXV style budgets, 300k is probably a decent return for them. I'd also be surprised if World of Final Fantasy didn't sell more than DQ Builders

DQ Builders is my game of the generation so far... I'm 20+ hours in and am just finishing the first chapter (I may have obsessed about my town a bit more than I should have.) I didn't even like Minecraft.

I agree that I prefer the PS2 era, and honestly I don't care about half of these titles, BUT the fact that I got to play a brand new SMT game, that P5 is coming out relatively soon (sigh), and that the new Pokemon is an actually worthy successor of BW for once is good enough for me. Plus a decent quality Souls clone and an actual Nier sequel? Yes please.

I've had a decent stream of niche, high quality JRPGs on my 3DS alone, but more high profile ones coming out is always a good thing.

Which ones? Also, I doubt more were released if we're going across PS3/PS4/Vita/PC/Wii U/3DS

Suikoden
Suikoden 2
Breath of Fire 3
Breath of Fire 4
Grandia
FF7
FF8
FF9
Dragon Quest VII
Xenogears
Shining Force 3 Scenario 1
Panzer Dragoon Saga
Vandal Hearts
Vandal Hearts 2
Wild Arms
Wild Arms 2
Arc the Lad Collection
Tales of Destiny
Tales of Eternia
Legend of Legaia
Star Ocean: Second Story
Vanguard Bandits
Azure Dreams
Vagrant Story
Alundra
Brave Fencer Musashi
Lunar
Lunar 2
Persona
Persona 2
Dragon Force
Mystaria : Realms of Lore
Shining the Holy Ark
Paper Mario
Hybrid Heaven
Ogre Battle 64
Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen
Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together
Final Fantasy Tactics
Dragon Warrior Monsters
Dragon Warrior Monsters 2 Coby/Tara
Lufia: The Legend Returns
Dragon Warrior 1 + 2
Dragon Warrior 3
Pokemon Yellow
Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal

Plenty I've forgotten I'm sure, and a few popular ones I personally think are trash (IE chrono cross) not on my list, but I'd take it over this gen in a second. And if you're saying PS3 because there are still games coming out for it now, I could easily add later SNES games like Super Mario RPG and Breath of Fire II.

Hell, if you add in the non-localised stuff it's a TKO. I know you're specifically talking about the west, but the massive drop in JRPG's in Japan is very telling.

We're in an era where fewer companies are making RPGs than ever, so while it might be nice to get several high-tier RPGs all in a short time period, the B-tier RPG is pretty much extinct. It doesn't feel like a renaissance, just a period where the stars aligned for the handful of companies still putting these games out.

I agree. ToB, P5, Pokemon and FFXV all releasing close to each other. This is like a miracle.

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
It's certainly better than last gen, I can't keep up with all the games! I hope it's not a flash in the pan like Aeana said where it just so happened that a whole bunch of games concluded development at once (plus the west got a lot of translations of older games and PC ports this year which added to things).

I do think there's been a shortage of new RPG IP that has a semblance of a budget, though. But at the same time, while the Japanese home market is in decline, JP devs are finally waking up to the fact there are plenty of people overseas who love their games.

The current JRPG situation on consoles/handhelds this gen (and last) is sort of strange. Output from Japanese big pubs has collapsed, but we get a ton of games that no one would have bothered localizing in the PS1 era.

I guess it sort of balances out for western fans unless you want more big budget games.

But OP, JRPGs need to be saved still!

I for one agree though, I love the output we are getting.

In the last year we have gotten Final Fantasy XV, I am Setsuna, Bravely Second, Dark Souls 3, Tokyo Mirage Sessions, Trails of Cold Steel 2, Fire Emblem Fates, Shin Megami Tensei IV Apocalypse, Pokemon Sun and Moon, World of Final Fantasy, Atelier Sophie, Star Ocean 5, Final Fantasy Explorers, Dragon Quest Builders, Paper Mario Color Splash (okay it's probably not really a JRPG anymore), and Mario and Luigi Paper Jam. And that's not counting remasters and remakes.

And we have Kingdom Hearts 2.8, Nier Automata, Persona 5, Nioh, and Scalebound to look forward to next year, and Ni No Kuni 2 and Dragon Quest XI probably too!

Plus we know FF7 Remake and Kingdom Hearts 3 are coming!

It indeed is great time for JRPG fans.
Can't wait to start up next year with Nioh and here's hoping Ys 8 manages to release next year.

Hyped for Persona 5 (PS4), Tales of Berseria (PC) and Artelier Firis (PC, please dont fuck it up KT)

Plus some more dungeon crawler that are coming to PC.

These + looking over my 3DS games, there's Etrian Odyssey and SMT spin-offs from Atlus, Stella Glow as Imageepoch's swan song, Forbidden Magna, Story of Seasons, and Rune Factory from Marvelous, various Mystery Dungeons from Chunsoft, Legend of Legacy, and probably some more on the eShop that didn't look interesting enough to buy. Also about 30 games from Idea Factory and Gust per year and some great recent years from Falcom. Like, I can only describe the amount of B-tier JRPGs coming out this gen as a shit ton.

I bought Pkmn Moon and FFXV and have put about 4 hours into them both (combined).

I really want to play them, I'm excited for them. However, I sit down to play them and can only play for a short session. It's strange.

Nice list, but there's a lot B-tier stuff out now that challenges those above. We're also not done with the generation. Although the Switch will technically usher another.
