Air Date: January 12

Crunchyroll will get it, but they haven't announced it yet.
Author: Natsume Akatsuki
Studio: Studio Deen

  • PLOT: This story is about our lovable protagonist Kazuma Satou. Kazuma is a NEET that dies on the way back from buying a video game when he attempts to save a girl from getting hit by a vehicle. Ironically the girl herself was not going to be hit by the vehicle, which was a slow moving tractor. Kazuma pathetically dies when he goes into shock thinking he has been hit by a truck. Kazuma wakes up to find himself in a strange room in front of a beautiful girl with blue air. Her name is Aqua, and she is a goddess. She's also a terrible person. She gives Kazuma the choice of going to heaven or another chance at life in a fantasy world. This fantasy world is having a problem with lowering populations due to the resident Demon Lord killing everyone. As a special incentive people that choose to incarnate to this fantasy world are allowed to pick between certain overpowered buffs or alternatively bring anything they want with them. Getting sick of the constant insults and laughs from this goddess named Aqua, Kazuma decides to go to this fantasy world and picks Aqua as the thing he is going to take. Against Aqua's wishes, the choice is accepted. Kazuma and Aqua now start their new life in the fantasy world not being able to make ends meet, staying in a stable because they can't afford to stay in an inn, and mundane odd jobs like construction to accrue money. Eventually they meet new people, form a party, and go adventuring!

  • SECOND SEASON PLOT: After the events of Season 1, Kazuma has been sequestered and awaits trial for destroying a nobleman's mansion.

  • WHY WE WATCH IT: Yes, this is an Isekai (Any series that deals with a character ending up in another world) which is a genre that has gotten over saturated on the market of late. The reason why we love this show is because it is hilarious. The story subverts many tropes and cliches of self fulfillment isekai stories. The main character Kazuma ends up with the WORST RPG team you could possibly assemble. The characters are great.

  • CHARACTERS
Kazuma Satou
Our lovable protagonist. He dies on earth in a pathetic manner and is given a second chance in a fantasy world
Class: Adventurer
Stats: High LUCK and INTELLIGENCE
Notable Skills:
  • Steal
  • Hide
  • Sense Enemy
  • One-hand Sword
  • Basic Spell
  • Drain Touch

Aqua
A goddess of water who sent people on their path through the afterlife, up until Kazuma dragged her along with him. She is an energetic and simpleminded girl who likes to receive reverence for her status and gets upset easily. As an Arch priest and a goddess, she is powerful against demons and the undead, and is able to resurrect recently deceased people as well as purify water supplies. Rather than learning skills which would benefit her party, she spends most of her skill points learning Party Tricks. She is also an alcoholic that can't keep her liquor down.
Class: Arch Priest
Stats: Everything is high except for low INTELLIGENCE and the lowest possible LUCK stat. Due to her stats already being maxed, Kazuma is depressed to realize that she will never get smarter.
Notable Skills:
  • Sacred Turn Undead (a spell that purifies undead class enemies)
  • Sacred Create Water (conjures holy water)
  • Resurrection Spell
  • Flower, Bird, Wind, Moon - A parlor trick where the user sprays water from grasped fans into a cup on their head, where a sprout instantly blooms.

Megumin
An Arch Wizard who claims she is from the Crimson Demon clan, humanoids with powerful magic abilities. She is a chūnibyō. She only knows one spell, the powerful Explosion spell, and refuses to learn any other spell since "Explosion is the best". Unfortunately she doesn't have enough Mana to keep on casting it, so when she uses the spell she is immediately incapacitated for the rest of the day. After using the spell she needs to have a party member carry her. She is the first party member Kazuma and Aqua recruit. By meeting Kazuma, she has fulfilled something she has always wanted to do: Cast Explosion twice in a day
Class: Arch Wizard
Stats: High MAGIC
Notable Skills:

Darkness
Real name Lalatina Dustiness Ford. A crusader who possesses powerful offense and defense, but lacks the accuracy to deliver her attacks. She is a masochist who dreams of being ravaged by monsters or married to an abusive husband; regardless, she is serious with issues involving her friends. She joins the party as their fourth member much to the protest of Kazuma.
Stats: High STRENGTH, DEFENSE, ENDURANCE, HITPOINTS. Very low ACCURACY and low AGILITY
Notable Skills:
  • Getting hit and liking it

This is the first OT I've made where I've actually done editing for it. Much respect to the people that do this regularly.

Surprise hit of last year. Thought it was just going to be another generic isekai story, but you end up with what is essentially the Always Sunny in Philadelphia crew if they were in a RPG fantasy world. A bunch of stupid assholes putting up with each other.

The artstyle being janky as hell also somehow manages to add to the comedy.

Yeah, that aspect is weird.

I found when I made the last seasonal thread, that when I restricted myself to certain vertical dimensions that I had to cut or adjust too many press materials and images. So I bumped it up from 1000x333 to 1000x400.

On topic: ReZero's episode 18 preview had Megumi/Emila's voice actress saying Megumi's Explosion line.

Surprisingly maybe my favorite anime last year just because I enjoy to laugh more than anything.

The It's Always Sunny references are hilarious because just like that show on netflix, I'll rewatch an episode of Konosuba every now and then before bed just for a laugh.

I watched the first season on account of all the recommendations, not sure if I'll watch this one. I didn't think it was that subversive and the comedy fell just as flat as most wacky anime comedy does for me. The first episode was pretty good, but the rest of it was sort of a forgettable blur. Now Sakamoto desu ga was the show that really had me rolling with laughter last year.

Skimming through a few episodes to refresh my memory, I don't really get the Always Sunny comparison. The main character is a typical audience self-insert and the show probably spends far more time reinforcing how cute the other girls are rather than horrible and vindictive. Yes Aqua is haughty, just like a typical tsundere, but the terrible things the gang sometimes does are usually understandable, like a goddess naturally wanting to kill demons and tracksuit guy sexually harassing masochist girl because he thinks it's the sex dream he bought earlier. I mean one of the main characters is an actual knight with a code of honor. The plot isn't really similar either. I just don't get the comparison besides that a few of the characters are greedy sometimes.

I just watched the whole season a few days ago since I was avoiding it entirely because there are too many otaku sent to another world shows and, wow, I haven't laughed so hard at an anime in a long time. Can't wait for this to start up again.

Awesome! I feel the same way about the show. Can't wait to enjoy the new season with you all.

This show is incredible because it shits on so many anime AND rpg tropes.

At first glance you'd think this was the standard trip and grab a titty show, but it's really not (despite the overabundance of DOA breast physics). There's not an ounce of romance either, let alone any notions of harems. Every lead in this show thinks they're hot shit but are so incompetant they do more harm than good.

Oh Geist-, did you watch the OVA?

It's not required, except for introducing a character that will probably play a bigger role in Season 2, but it's hilarious.

Oh man, I can't wait to watch Season 2. Definitely in my top 3 most hyped shows this year. It was such a surprise how good it was last year as every episode had me choking from laughter

Ya, by far the funniest episode. I usually cringe hard at fan service, but somehow an entire episode dedicated to it did nothing but make me laugh.

This wasn't my favorite anime last year but I was surprised how much I liked it.

This show takes absolutely nothing seriously and leaves nothing sacred with is probably for the best. While there are plenty of trope-y things thrown in too, even the side characters are good for a laugh, and none of the main cast are simple one trick ponies in their comedy delivery.

Looking forward to this. It could easily go up from season 1.

Episode 1

Scumbag Kazuma is back in action! Laughed my ass off the entire time.
Using this as a starting point for a second season is actually brilliant since the trial was a natural way to quickly go over the key-points of last season as well as the characters, while not even feeling like it's recapping things at all.

Okay so ep 1 was god damn hilarious. All those faces. And that scene where they took Aqua's booze away killed me.

The explosion was temporary but strong.

I thought they were fair game after that ridiculous Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE OT

I'll admit that they are a bit eye catching and might lead to people using them to get their OT's noticed.
