It took 12 hours to count it..i mean this is the best way to shut them up, what a hero that guy.

As always every penny counts!

Nick Stafford, who has been fighting with the Department of Motor Vehicles in Virginia, decided to pay his $2,987.14 tax bill in pennies.

It took five wheelbarrows to transport the nearly 300,000 coins to the local DMV. All the pennies broke the coin-counting machine and ultimately had to be counted by hand.

Funny story. Surprised they accepted it. IIRC, places can legally reject certain methods of payment.

What a cunt. I don't see how ruining the day of the people who work at the DMV does anything to protest.

His issue is with the higher ups, not with the normal man or woman who works behind the counter and hates their job.

Sounds like a giant dickhead who decided to make low wage worker's shitty job even shittier for no good reason. Nothing about this should be applauded.

This guys a piece of shit. He's punishing the 9-5 folks for something the suits in charge of them are responsible for. Should have shoved every penny right up his ass.

Seems like a huge waste of time. The person who had to count it had nothing to do with his fine, I am sure.

Yeah, I feel for the poor employees who had to spend 12 hours at work counting pennies because some guy wanted to send a message. The people he's pissed at aren't counting the coins and are just happy he paid.

Surprised they even accepted it. Pretty sure they have the option to decline payment.

guy who didn't know which of his 4 houses to register the corvette he bought for his son harasses government workers, who were all very nice to him by his own account. this is not to be praised.

Yay. He wasted 12+ hours of his own time and 12 hours of a completely unrelated stranger's time. What a guy.

It's going to be real easy immediately spotting the people in this thread who've never had to work with the general public, retail or in the service industry.

This "protest" was incredibly asinine.

So he didn't get his question answered on the first call and escalated things? I don't get why. Surely there is somewhere you can reach them for questions?

Bullshit to have people work late because of this. They don't make the rules and such.

Payment for a government issued tax, I'd imagine, has to be the exception to that.

Something like that....that's probably the exception. And (from the story):

The total weight of the pennies was 1,548 pounds, Stafford said. He said the DMV was required by law to accept the unrolled pennies because of a federal act that specifies coins to be ”legal tender for all debts, public charges, taxes, and dues."

Couldn't remember whether there was an exception to the exception, or just a blanket exception.

What an asshole. He is taking his frustrations of bureaucracy out on people that can't make any changes. Also wasting everyone else's time who happen to be unlucky enough to be behind him.

DMV ruins other people's days and wastes our time all the fucking time. He gave them a taste of their own medicine. I like it.

I ain't never been to the DMV and left happy, their customer service leaves much to be desired.

I feel like there's a story about someone paying the DMV in pennies every year. People really hate the DMV.

If you read the story the guy paid 10 people to help him unroll the pennies AND he bought the wheel barrows... Cost him over 800 dollars to enact his revenge. Plus another 1005 to take the case to court (which he lost). This is ON TOP of the fine.

That's road rage tier anger.

The Bristol Herald Courier reported that Stafford hired 11 people to help him break open the rolled coins the night before he delivered them. It took four hours for his employees to break all the paper rolls with hammers, and he paid each person $10 per hour, bringing the total to $440. He also bought the wheelbarrows, costing another $400.

He also paid $1,005 to file his three lawsuits, arguing for more DMV numbers and for its employees to be fined. He was given the other phone numbers, but a judge ultimately dismissed the cases

He did not, actually. It didn't much matter to the DMV employee(s) who had to count his pennies. I'm sure it mattered to the other random Joes who were unfortunate enough to be at the DMV that day and have their business held up by this royal dickhead.

Hate the government, roll coal, vote for Trump.

I'm a contractor who works with DMV employees every day. One of the best parts of my job was seeing how invested nearly every DMV employee is in making the customer/citizen experience the best it can possibly be. Sure, there are exceptions to this, but in my day to day, the fiercest citizen advocates I see are the front counter DMV employees. So yeah, this guy is a huge jerk and incredibly mean-spirited.

I've been on the receiving end of (in my mind) unfair tax policies, so I get the sentiment here, but all he has actually done is made someone who, in all likelihood, is on his side second-guess the kind of service they provide.

This guy is a real prize.

Stafford has been fighting with the DMV since September, when he initially tried to call the local office to ask a question about where to register his car, since he owns multiple houses in the area, he explained in a statement.

The phone number listed online for the Lebanon DMV sent him to a customer call center in Richmond, which put him on hold for over an hour. Stafford decided to make a Freedom of Information Act request for a direct number to the DMV, which he was given.
The fight further escalated when Stafford called and was told he wasn’t allowed to call the number and was hung up on. Eventually, Stafford was given the answer to his initial question, but he said he wanted government agencies to be more responsive to public inquiries. He even demanded to know the direct numbers of other Virginia DMVs, taking the issue to court.

“It shouldn’t matter if you pay $300 per year in income taxes or pay $300,000 per year in income taxes like myself, because the backbone of a free democracy/republic begins with government transparency, period,” he said.

...

He also paid $1,005 to file his three lawsuits, arguing for more DMV numbers and for its employees to be fined. He was given the other phone numbers, but a judge ultimately dismissed the cases.

What a hero!

you guys must never deal with some of these agencies where you call and you never get an answer.

this guy is arguing that he should get answers when he wants them and shouldn't have to resort to FOIA to get info.

Why would they want to waste your time? They want to collect fees and get you out the door. People fuck this up for themselves all the time and blame the DMV.

Yeah, I'm sure the person at the counter who has to deal with woefully outdated hardware and software, deal with shitty customers who are pissed off because they've had to wait since the place is understaffed are sooooo happy that they're wasting people's time.

You do understand that these people are just doing their job right? It's the people who run it that are useless. It's the government who doesn't give a shit who's at fault. Not the poor chump who has to stay up all night counting this cunt's pathetic "protest."

Serious Sam is a wicked gahbidge series for chowdaheads.

Yeah, he doesn't have a primary residence? Where does he vote? Or, honestly, depending on his insurance he could reasonably register them anywhere so long as they're primarily housed there.

This isn't hard and the answer to his question is, at worst, a "no one gives a shit" so long as you pay the taxes to someone.

But in effect he's also shitting on other citizens, by slowing down an already notoriously slow department with his bullshit.

Everything about what this guy did is some deplorable shit.

Yeah...I don't think a $3,000 fine is worth an extra $400.

His rage isn't very cost effective :)
