Everyone keep quoting the 20 hours of play time. It wouldn't surprise me at all if 20 hours is only for 1 2 Switch or similar games. Anything else would be worst.

That's completely backwards. If anything games like 1 2 Switch that make heavy use of the HD rumble and motion controls will drain the batteries the fastest, while standard games that aren't using the motion controls much if at all would drain them the slowest.

Well, there's an obvious reason why they're using a proprietary connection at least. I don't see how you'd have the joycons just slide on like they do if they were microusb or whatever. Maybe they could have added microusb in addition to the rail connections.

But I'm not going to argue the point that proprietary isn't annoying. It is.

It would be completely moot if they just included the damn charging grip with the system since it has a USB-c port.

The audio's perfectly fine on my PS4 and XBO controllers, not sure what's wrong with yours. Having a damn headphone jack in your controller is standard in 2017 for God's sake. It's practically no cost to include one.

Honestly makes me think that the feature set and OS is so bare bones they didn't even build in a way for the system to send audio to your controller. There were some rumors about this thing not having an internet browser, or any multi media apps, so its not a stretch to think they've pulled out other non essential functions... Which circles back to, why is thing so expensive??

When you buy extra Joy-Cons, how do you charge them? Let say I buy 3 sets of Joy Cons (which total $240 USD) do I have to alternate the Joy Con with the Switch Tablet every 3.5 hours if they are fully depleted? Do you have to buy Joy Con Charge grips for them at $30 USD that become $90 for 3. ($330 for the total cost of 3 sets of Joy Cons with 3 sets of charge grips) For the price of the Joy Cons Nintendo should have added Wireless Charging as well if they are going to put so much tech into the controller.

has there been any confirmation whether people will or won't be able to use Wii U Pro Controllers on this? They're a little light for my liking but I'd happily stick with that over having to pay the asking price for the Switch version.

EDIT:
Actually do we know if the new one has analogue triggers and vibration now? I assume it will.

Really disappointed with the prices of the console and controllers...also the fact they'll charge online on the Switch just adds more to my discontent. That launch lineup isn't anything amazing (since I own a Wii U) making my hype go down a lot to be honest.
Also worried about which Wi-fi module they'll use because the Wii U's really bad.

That was Vern that stated that in one of the various Switch speculations threads.

It's an audiophile thing. It is compressed etc. so for people who care greatly about sound quality it "sucks."

But as I said, I agree with you. For the vast majority it's perfectly fine as most don't care as long as it's static free and loud enough.
It's not an audiophile thing. I'm not an audiophile. It's just not good quality audio and I think most people would recognize that. I'm sure there are people who are fine with it regardless but I find it really weird for people on a gaming enthusiast forum to be so outraged over the lack of a headphone jack when there are much better and simple ways to get audio from a console.

Doesn't justify the lack of a basic feature.
To clarify my initial post of course it would be nice for there to be a headphone jack. Not having one is a dumb oversight. But the outrage over not having one seems overkill.

Yep. Either alternate which ones are charging on the tablet while docked/plugged in, or get the $30 charger grip.

....when there are much better and simple ways to get audio from a console.

But there's really not for many set ups. Many people only have wired headphones and are just using tv speakers or sound bars and often don't have any headphone jacks in their setup.

If the console supports bluetooth and/or USB dongled headsets like the Playstation Golds, that makes it easier. But is added cost for people who don't have those types of headsets already.

Because Nintendo is CONVINCED that the only way they can sell a console is to fill it with gimmicks. They seem to be endlessly chasing that Wii success, but for some reason misunderstanding WHY the Wii was successful and refusing to believe they can't recreate that lightning in a bottle.

I don't even get what their gimmick is this time. Joycons don't seem that different from two wii remotes. And having a home system that can change to a portable doesn't seem relevant to most gamers outside of japan. It's a solution to problem that doesn't exist for a lot of people.

I was watching GiantBomb's stream, and although the new Pro controller is the best "Pro controller" to date, it's still far behind in feel (and build?) from the DS4 and XB1 gamepad. Which can be found at half its cost regularly.

People need to stop saying shit like this. The controllers for Xbox One and PS4 are 3-4 years old at this point. No shit you can find them on sale. You sure couldn't when they first came out though. I mentioned upthread I got my TWO PSMove+Nav controllers for under $20. Were they that price at launch? No. The PSMove was $50 and the Nav was $30.

I'm not defending the price of the Switch accessories, but it's completely disingenuous to compare something several years old that's on sale to something brand new that hasn't even released yet.

Also, have you held the controller yourself? If not, then you don't know that it doesn't feel as good, better, or worse than a DualShock Pro or Xbone Pad. You're taking someone else's opinion on it. If there's one thing Nintendo has been consistent on it's making ergonomic controllers. And WTF at build quality? Let's talk about that why don't we. Let's talk about the DualShock 4's build quality and completely garbage battery that everyone on NeoGaf constantly bitches about, or how the Xbone Pad can't keep a stable connection to the console half the time.

If the Switch controllers come out and they suck, then they suck. But until we get to try them for ourselves we're just regurgitating other people's opinions about feel and build quality. Especially since something like feel can vary widely from person to person due to hand shape and size.

I also think complaining about the lack of a headphone jack on the pro Controller is dumb. I know the Xbox and PlayStation controllers have them, but the audio that comes through the controller is garbage. If you want to use headphones use a proper headset.

We don't know if this thing spits out audio over USB(the Wii U and Xbox One sure as hell don't) and it almost certainly doesn't have optical out.

So if the only two audio options end up being over HDMI or from the headphone jack of the tablet, are we seriously gonna pretend that Nintendo gives a shit about quality audio options?

I use headphones through the controller on both my Xbox One and PS4. I play when my kids are asleep so sound through the TV isn't an option. Sound quality is fine for playing games or watching movies. I play from my couch with my TV maybe 7 feet away. What options do I have outside of buying new headphones with a 10ft cable?

Maybe wireless headphones? Have to hear more if there's more info.

They added a mini Kinect in there for good measure, just to cover ALL the motion control bases ;)

The Joy-Con with the grip is $120? WHAT IN THE EVERLIVING...

Edit: Seems the grip is $30, so $110 instead then? Still wtf.

Baby hands mode is a no go, so suddenly the Switch becomes like the most expensive console on the market to play comfortable local co-op.

Forcing people to pay 130$ for a full controller is just evil.

$50 for one single Joy Con
$80 for a pair
$30 for a grip...

Wtf

Nintendo is doing like Apple lol. First the tablet thing with the Wii U, now the lack of headphone jack

There is absolutely no reason at all to buy two individual JoyCons when they come bundled at a $20 discount. The most people should be paying for the "full" controller is $110.

Which is still fucking ridiculous but c'mon.

Edit: Well, actually, I guess if you want a single grey JoyCon and a single Neon Blue/Red you'd have to buy them alone and that would add up to $130. FFS.

$70 is crazy for the Pro controller

It has a headphone jack though, right?

I think it looks really good and I love the Wii U Pro Controller but that price is indeed crazy. I think I'll be using the Grip until the price falls. I just don't want to think about having to keep the individual Joy-Con charged in order to play.

Seriously ?

Are you just trolling?

We all know there's a pro controller for $70. The joy cons have separate functionality. Basically each one is a Wiimote.

Pancake Mix

Copied someone else's pancake recipe
No analogue triggers again means no Super Mario Sunshine (and likely any GC titles) on VC.

Even Melee used it for shield density.

Totally disagree with this. Talk to any gamer that has kids and ask them about the home/portable concept. It's a GAME CHANGER if you're an adult gamer who has very little tv time these days. I personally see myself using it a lot...and I have every console out these days.

The question is just how many of those there are out there. Off TV play didn't help the Wii U. Granted this is better since it's play anywhere and not within 20-30 feet of the consoles.

In the west (US especially) a lot of people have multiple TVs and aren't fighting for screen time with signficant others/kids/roommates.

It's definitely a hugely useful feature for people who do have to share limited TVs though.

A third party is making them already. I was linked to it in this thread.

Here we are

Yeah, if you want separate colors for the full controller it'll be 130$
Also I expect the pairs to be sold out all the time.

I'll probably cancel my pre-order. :/ bought into the hype too quickly but they definitely gotta lower the price on all these things. I can just buy Zelda for the Wii U and hope something happens in time for the new Mario game.

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
All I'm saying is your can charge a Dualshock 4 with basically things you most likely already have around the house. Yet in 2017 Nintendo is still using proprietary charger, that's some bull. Everyone keep quoting the 20 hours of play time. It wouldn't surprise me at all if 20 hours is only for 1 2 Switch or similar games. Anything else would be worst.

USB Type-C isnt some proprietary charger. My phone uses it (LG G5) and most chargers will be switching to it in the near future, its essentially the micro usb replacement. Plug is rectangular so it can be plugged either way and supports quick charge.

What are the odds that barring desperate-the-titanic-is-finally-sinking firesale, those Nintendo controllers will be discounted anywhere near as often and to the same percentages as the PS4 and XB1 pads over its lifetime? Nintendo has a history of keeping the prices of first-party games and peripherals high, they even get praise for it on the boards. And okay maybe not all peripherals, someone mentioned the Wii Motes awhile back. (Which I can't verify is accurate or not)

And that it's if you can find them. Nintendo is not great with stock at times.

People should also as the reverse of the question: How many portable gamer in the West (current gen guesstimates for the 3DS is at about 41 million and Vita maybe at 5 million sold total is about 46 million portable) that own home consoles? Wouldn't a portable gamer would like something that docks into there tv and possibly replace there home console?

It's competing in a market against those products, don't pretend Switch exists in a vacuum. It doesn't in this situation. You have to compared the cost to what's out there right now.

Do we have any confirmation about the charging (30$) grip having a battery as well?

That might somehow explain the cost, and why they didn't include in the default configuration.

I doubt it includes a battery. It's mentionned nowhere. My bet is it's just a basic grip with an added USB port.

Tried to get it re-opened, didn't happen. Then Giantbomb 'confirmed' something and I briefly took it at face value before realising game journalism is one big kiddy pool of piss. There's a more specific thread again here: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1333728&page=2

But everyone is sort of still believing the packed in one 'must' have charging otherwise it'd be mad. Or that it's not a big deal because of a battery life estimate we all put 100% stock into.
