Official Nintendo Switch hardware overview

Nice and informative, I like it!

I don't know if the Switch will have room to stand on my shelf, might have to lay it on it's side, or put it in a cupboard.

Gonna need room for this and a Scorpio, and maybe a Neo at some point when they get their act together. This gen is finally waking from it's slumber!

Has there been any word on whether or not you can have the dock in a horizontal position? It simply won't fit in my entertainment center in the vertical orientation they've been showing.

Excuse me, but it's referred to as "toaster style."

No it's not.

It's designed to keep your cords more tidy.

It was probably designed with that function and tidiness in mind I would imagine. I think the Fallon footage shows there are rubber feet on the back of the case, which would only make sense if this is designed to be layed down horizontally.

I'm assuming that SDXC 'update' will be available on day one...? Doesn't seem to mention it being at a later date.

Does SDXC have a licensing fee? I wonder if this is their way to minimize the fee. They only have to pay for users who connect the system to the internet. The weirdos who buy a console to never connect aren't going to be needing SDXC anyways, so why pay for them?

I think that's why some consoles like the Xbox One have to download the blu-ray player as an app, so that they don't have to pay the licensing fees for users who won't be playing blu-rays.

Honestly, it makes sense. The people who will need more than 32gb are the power users. You've gotta consider the fact that the vast majority of people who buy these things, and I'm not talking about core gamers, I'm talking about people who wander into a Walmart to buy something because they're kids have been begging for it after seeing a TV spot, are not going to be downloading large e-shop games all the time. They'll probably be the folks who buy anywhere from 2-5 games a year, and they'll likely buy those titles at retail. To Nintendo, it's not worth raising the price of the system to give those users storage they won't use.

For the power users who are going to be buying a lot of Eshop titles, it's best to just give them expandable storage and put in as much as they want.

This. Those 32GB are only important if you buy full retail games in the eShop (something the 'normal' customer wouldn't do, since you get physical Gamecards in the shop) and then, even 64GB would be a joke. The PS4 needs you to install your games, so they *had* to provide at least 500GB, which is enough for 10-15 full sized games games, but with the Switch, it's different.

I think Nintendo took a hard look at their data with Wii(U) and (3)DS and saw that the vast majority of users still buy retail. And if you buy retail, you would have no problems for even 5 years and 30 games, because you just download patches and firmware updates and you just need space for saves.

In the end: compared to the 3DS or Vita, this is a massive, massive push for more storage. And the enthusiast can get a lot of storage for a nice price.

Is it possible to charge the system in handheld mode? W/o the dock?

Do the joycons only charge when attached to the dock?

I think you could make it work man, with the wires placed as such! It's probably not how they'd like to show it off but it seems to accommodate it anyhow. Doesn't look like you'd be blocking any sort of airflow.

What I've learned is that no one knows, hah. Guess I'll wait and see as we get closer to launch

Still don't get why Nintendo don't do analogue triggers, I'm sure they will use some bullshit excuse like it's too complicated for people to use or something.

Analogue triggers have been standard for years.

The two SKU thing bit them firmly in the ass with the Wii U. It seems like Nintendo went with the least common denominator.
Because one of these SKU was absolutely stupid (8 GB). 32 GB at least is reasonable. I feel like people would be pretty 50/50 if they were given a 64 GB option

The AC adapter which works with the dock can be plugged straight into the Switch.

Joy cons charge attached to the Switch or when attached to a Joy con charging grip (sold separately). A grip does come with the package but does not charge the joy con.

By pressing the Capture Button on Joy-Con (L), you can capture screenshots during gameplay instantly.*

This is what I wanted to know. Looks like it'll store them normally unlike how they did it with Miiverse on Wii U and 3DS.

Do the Joycons charge when attached to the handheld unit which is charged by a USB-C cable (so not in the dock)?

Yes, I'm almost completely certain they will. Because it would be stupid if they ran out of juice before the system, and we know they'll recieve a charge from the main unit.

Haha I think the only worry I can come up with is that the tablet itself doesn't actually secure in, so there's potential there on its side to be pulled out, but there's no slant to the dock either so I think it'd be fairly safe in an entertainment centre. Who knows though lol

Ah you may have a point there, makes sense

Has there been anything said about whether someone playing a Switch docked can LAN with someone playing in handheld? Like if I took my Switch round to a friends and they wanted to play theirs on the TV, could we do that?

Also can 2 docked Switch play over LAN together? Like that Splatoon eSports event at the end of the reveal trailer, could you do that over LAN on TVs

The need for more storage remains to be seen.

I get Nintendo going with one SKU especially when a higher storage SKU would probably cost the same or more than what people could just upgrade themselves too.

That being said your only gonna get like 28 gigs of storage of 32 gigs.

I'm also not entirely sure where the OS is being housed. If it's on the 32 gigs of storage then your looking at even less.

The issue becomes patches. Even if you are a physical only person patches could become an issue. This is especially true if we get larger 3rd party experiences.

Why would you need USB 3.0 for the LAN adapter.

When I read about it, someone had went through Nintendo filings and noticed that the adapter was tested with USB 3.0 not the USB 2.0. Also, someone on Twitter wrote that only the two side USB on the Switch were USB 2.0, and the back USB was the only USB 3.0. So, people thinking that all three USB will be upgraded to USB 3.0 at a later time I think are mistaken since the front two are only USB 2.0 hardware.

It's hardly even possible to be physical only any more. I would if I had the choice with every game, but so many games are download only now.

I still haven't heard if the Switch will allow us to use multiple SD cards. That's going to be crucial, I think. Even Nintendo releases quite a few download only titles these days, and a fair amount of DLC as well.

It uses one Micro SD card, but support goes up to 2TB. (Once those cards actually exist.)

This system has 2 USBs on the front so it makes perfect sense for the GCN VC to work with the Smash GCN adapter. Feels like that should cover it just as well as the pro controller would; either way you have to drop cash on an extra controller and a lot of people still have GCN controllers hanging around or available for cheap.
Definitely possible. If that's the case though, it would mean you can't play GC games in handheld mode, which would suck.

Funny thing is, it's been years since I bought a physical game, but with Switch I'm going physical only, there's something about the boxes, artwork and carts that reminds me of SNES, I guess it's pure nostalgia, haha.

Audio output: Supports linear PCM 5.1ch
Please note: output via HDMI cable in TV mode.

So I'm guessing this means I can't plug my wired headphones into the Switch while it's docked?

yeah, that's what I'm worried about. I was hoping I could use a 3.5mm cable to run the audio to my computer speakers, but now it sounds like I need to get an HDMI splitter.

Maybe Nintendo can patch the ability in later.

The front two USB ports are most likely for the Smash GCN controller adaptor and nothing else.

most of Nintendo's own games typically benefit from digital triggers vs. analog

Just finished animating the evolution of Nintendo Controllers, ending in the Switch.

Click it for High Res :)

How about this?

Dystify turned the full video into a gif notrailer so you can see the very end with the Neon Joycons coming in.

My 128gb sdxc card better work day 1 otherwise I've just wasted money!

Obviously it will. The update is either for licensing reasons like someone said or it could just be badly worded and that the update is just to add support for cards over a certain size.
