The Criterion Collection in 2017: All Fancy Movie GAF Releases Welcome!

It really is. Some just can't handle the undeniable fact that John Woo's Hard Boiled is a contender for the best film ever made ever and it irritates them for some reason.

Their loss!

Glad to see we're among great science fiction people here. :p

I'll praise prime John Woo, and Hard Boiled especially, forever and ever. Right up there with any of my favorite Film School bait arthouse movies. Beautiful chaos.

It took a month, but I finally received my Fright Night Steelbook by Eureka. It's beautiful and includes the new documentary "You're so cool Brewster". I was worried it got lost in transit for a minute.

I hope you all don't consider this too trashy but..... The Terminator's most recent Blu-ray transfer is fucking incredible, real jaw dropping material. It straight up elevated Cameron's mastery of the camera for me even more than I thought was even possible.

Film snobs that shit on The Terminator for being pop trash aren't real film fans. It's been a while since I've made a list but T1 is probably in my top ten.

The transfer looks incredible as well, I do wish that the original audio was included though. The pistol in the original track sounds like the shotgun in the Remastered. Then the shotgun in the original sounds like a damn cannon.

I like how each of the first three Terminator films are indicative of the decade it was made in. They're all windows into that era.

John Woo people are great people.

I know, it's the only glaring deficiency in an otherwise great release. The tinkerer's disease- sometimes we get greatness and sometimes the opposite.

Most definitely, great observation.

Anyone have a link to this new Terminator blu-ray? I didn't realize one had come out.
Hrm well, by new I mean its most recent. I found this release for cheap but from what I understand, it's the same that's been used for a few years now in every Region 1 BLU. I'm no expert buuut it has noticeably cooler blue tones and an altered sound mix compared to earlier releases.

Did nothing to lessen it's incredible framing and detail, the way he times suspense, etc.

Oh okay, was just making sure I hadn't missed something. Yeah, I have that release and it's fantastic.

Indicator releases for March (aka suck it Twilight Time part 3):

Jesus christ that cover for The Big heat is amazing. And then you take a look at the two crap ones Twilight Time made, when they just could have used that beautiful artwork.

That cover is better, but I have the Twilight Time Big Heat with the coffee pot and the steam above it and I kinda like it lol.

So uh, anyone interested in sharing their collections? Finally got mine (mostly) sorted out.

My Criterions and 'essentials' on the top two shelves.

Tried to keep some genres together, i.e. parodies and horror films. Might have to purge some stuff too, since I'm kind of running out of room.

Daniel Clowes's sketches for the Criterion covers of Shock Corridor, The Naked Kiss and Ghost World are on sale next to my office. I wonder if I should get one.

j/k sale price ranges between 4200€ and 5000€. Original comics pages up to 15000€/page and not even the best stuff. I'll stick to collecting Eightballs T_T

Isn't there usually a Criterion sale in February? I can't remember.
should be one around Feb 28th
Oh lord I hope so. I'm eyeing the BLU releases of-

1. Rashomon
2. 12 Angry Men
3. Carnival of Souls
4. The Seventh Seal
5. Seven Samurai
6. Dr. Strangelove

whenever the next sale drops! Yeah I'll be stalking this thread lol

I hope I'm not the only OCD collector...
I consolidated everything I had to three binders and single shelf, I'll spare everyone here the hundreds of binder scans I sent with a rental insurance claim. Kept the inserts of course but the plastic cases had to go, I've moved probably six times in six years.

What would a box set even include that isn't already a criterion

Criterion has 2 Wong Kar Wai films. Besides My Blueberry Nights, all of his films deserve to be a Criterion film.

As Tears Go By
Days of Being Wild
Chungking Express
Ashes of Time
Fallen Angels
Happy Together
In the Mood for Love
2046

That would be an incredible box, not to mention some of the short films he's done. The Grandmaster was Weinstein in the US, so I don't know if they could get that, but since they basically butchered the film, it deserves to be seen correctly.

I doubt they would bundle that all together but Chungking express deserves a reprint

Share the shelf then, lol.

Don't tease me like this! I'd buy a box set day zero. If not I'd settle for a Chungking reissue and Fallen Angels tho.

I wasn't crazy about Fallen Angels when I saw it in college ~10 years ago. I haven't revisited it since then. Chungking Express reissue should be a no go. How am I supposed to flaunt my BR copy around moviegaf if everyone has one?

I loved Fallen Angels. It's Wong Kar Wai doing a John Woo movie! When the movie cut to a telephoto lens shot for the first time after like 20 minutes of nothing but extreme wide lenses just as the beat kicked in and the hitman character was walking in slomo, that shit got me real pumped. I also saw it in college though and I was not very sober.

How we go from a WKW picture to begging for a boxset in like 2 seconds? lol

I get it though. The thirst is real. I'd be all over it too.

A reminder that The Grandmaster (at least the Hong Kong cut) is actually pretty good.

I'd assume most of the people who don't like that movie either haven't seen many Kar Wai films, and / or they watched the US cut.

Just started collecting last month. My first title was Videodrome I bought from HMV. Found the rest of them while out at the pawn shop.

Collection.

Can't wait for Ghost World. Was one of my favorites growing up. I had it on DVD years ago.

Chunking Express was incredible. I'd be down for a Criterion. I watched the one released by Tarantino's 'Rolling Thunder Pictures'(is that still a thing?)
The supplement with him gushing about the film was nice, though. You can always tell that is a man who loves movies.

Chunking Express was already a criterion. You dun slept brah. Rolling Thunder is a real cool film. I first saw it at a horror convention where the main chick in the film did a Q&A after.

Oh. Oh well, maybe I'll track it down one day. I usually check out films from the library then hunt them down if they're keepers.

Chunking feels like a keeper.

How many films did Tarantino put out under that label? Sounded like he had quite a wish list from that introduction.

Managed to pick up Dazed and Confused, Nashville, and The Thin Red Line this week. In addition to digibook versions of The Hustler and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. To top it off, I also grabbed the Ultimate 70th Anniversary edition of Citizen Kane. Got a good price for all of them to boot, so all in all a good week.

I thought I managed to score the Friday the 13th boxset off of Bestbuy.com, but I was shortly placed on backorder soon after. They seem to be getting in some stock every now and then so maybe I'll get lucky.

I'm so jealous and at the same time happy that you found The Third Man at a pawn shop, especially shortly after you started collecting. I'd feel like I'd hit the lottery if I stumbled upon that.

In case you didn't know, it's one of the most highly coveted 'out of print' Criterion's.
