Sony's Fate/Grand Order was the #3 highest grossing mobile game worldwide in January

I thought I'd make one more thread about this since it's changed so much since our last one, and I know people are primarily interested about the mobile performance of traditional game publishers and console vendors.

In November, when we had a thread about it making a gazillion dollars, it was #9, and it didn't even chart in the top 10 in November, but since then it's went to #4 in December and now #3 in January.

Sony is now also the 9th highest earning mobile company worldwide for the month, and the 2nd highest in Japan specifically.

Gamasutra had an article that details what the game is for the curious: http://www.gamasutra.com/blogs/Moto...brilliant_fusion_of_JRPG_and_visual_novel.php

Growing by leaps and bounds. Other Pubs would kill for this kind of success.

Was the anime well received?

do they ever plan on coming out with a en version like granblue fantasy did?

They're considering releasing it in the West, but haven't made a decision yet. They make A LOT of content so it's a bit harder than your average setup.

That said, the games are also a hybrid RPG and visual novel, so a lot of this growth is driven by the reception to its own content.

I am not discarding the game's own quality. I have heard from many people how they love the story in this game (especially the later half).
But I doubt it would have gotten this much popularity this quick if it wasn't for Type-moon/Fate's popularity.

I heard that one particular writer screwed up the story so badly that Nasu himself came and took over the latter part (fan complaints etc). C/D

Oh, for certain. The games that do best on mobile in Japan are often IPs that were quite popular 10-20 years ago and this hits that tremendously well. Similarly see the recent success of Yu-Gi-Oh after being largely irrelevant for ages.

I hope Type-Moon are making enough money from this to fund that Tsukihime remake.

More like where the fuck is Tsukihime 2: The Dark Six. They even hinted towards it in the manga.

:/ Wanna see fuckin Satsujinki already, goddamnit. But that damn mushroom nasu has been sitting back laughing at all of us for years and years

The manga author wrote Tsuki no Sango so we know Nasu takes his opinion into account

There's an anime this season, that probably helped. I haven't watched it yet, even though I love most things Fate.

This is Aniplex, not Playstation. They are mostly unrelated, except for the fact that when they succeed, Sony gets richer

While true, I think it's interesting to note that both Aniplex and PlayStation were birthed by Sony Music.

Would definitely be interested in seeing this one come over but the Visual Novel nature to it with regular updates might make it a bit more complicated. I'd imagine they'd question if the game would make enough overseas to justify it.

What...
It's fully owned by Sony. They were even created as a joint venture by 2 Sony owned entities.

(formerly known as Sony Pictures Entertainment Music Publishing Inc., Sony Pictures Entertainment Visual Works Inc., and Sony Music Entertainment Visual Works Inc.

It would be like saying besides Warner getting richer when they do well, DC has nothing to do with it....

Edit: nm, reading problems, you meant unrelated to Playstation.

Is there an anime/manga or something I can get into? I wanna see what all the hype is about. It's how I found One Piece after all, GAF hype delivers some times.

Fate/Zero and then Fate/stay night Unlimited Blade Works TV.

Soon the "third route" of the original Fate/stay night VN, Heaven's Feel, will be adapted into a series of films.

The old mid 2000s Fate anime was crap and so was the UBW movie (DEEN instead of ufotable for the production studio)

Aniplex is actually hiring someone with mobile game experience so I wouldn't be surprised if F/GO for english gets announced fairly soon.

YES!! LoL Its one of my favorite series.

Watch them in this order.
1:Fate Zero
2:Fate Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works

Your'e in for an awesome ride and some of the best animated fight scenes in my opinion. Id love to hear a LLTP thread about what you think of them.

Fate/Zero was amazing, Unlimited Blade works was a good story just the amount of Plot Armour the hero gets is ridiculous, Golden Archer is the best that's all you need to know.

The series has a complicated history of adaptions.

When the fate franchise was still early, DEEN studio was given rights to do a fate stay night anime. they did an adaption of the first route of the visual novel in 2006(which is where i started fate back then in high school). It wasn't done particularly well but has nostalgic value and certain redeeming elements.

DEEN in 2010 did a movie adaption of the second route, unlimited blade works, it was very rushed having to fit in an hour and a half time period, and the content suffered, although i didn't think it was so bad.

DEEN lost the rights after that and Ufotable got them, which they then used to make 2011's "Fate Zero" adaption of the prequel light novel. It was well received. This gave them incentive to do 2014's Fate Stay Night Unlimited Blade works anime series adaption.

In addition to this, there have been other anime spinoffs like Canival Phantasm, Grand order and such, but they are not considered apart of the main fate stay night material.

If you want to know the story, i always say start with the visual novel as the anime adaptions are incomplete, except in cases where one is not used to or not into visual novels. Then i recommend starting with Fate Zero and then going to UBW. The story is incomplete and not in the order it was originally written in, but ufotable interpreted the story in a way where people could watch the prequel first and move onto FSN as if it were the sequel instead of the other way around.

If you like those, then you can go back and watch DEEN's adaptions if your curious.

How much does Sony make from the game?

I feel like they would be talking about it a lot more if they were actually making money off it. Developers or the license holders might be getting a big chunk of the profit

Watch the subtitles too the English dub is atrocious

I disagree with this, i thought the dub of Zero and UBW were pretty good. FSN 06 and UBW 2010 were also good, outside of Shirou's voice being...yeah very bad.

Liam o brien's archer is pretty cool.

It's an amazing lore no doubt you'll really enjoy it, the story of Zero itself is astonishing, watching it from Zero-Unlimited blade works really pays off as you can understand why certain things are occurring. Also watch the Jap Subs first as you'll appreciate the Original VO of the various heroes
