Hamster talks Switch, Arcade Archives, tate mode, arcade stick support, Neo Geo

The Arcade Archive series has a feature to rotate the screen to play vertically-displayed arcade games. With Switch, you can easily stand the display vertically, so he think it’ll well fit for the system.

Programmers have said that it’s easier to port on Switch than expected. Hamda thought that coding around the Joy-Con might be peculiar, but doing so isn’t actually that difficult. Speaking only to titles currently in development, the hardware specs on Switch are sufficient. Hamada has a good impression about the device as a result.

Hamada thought about implementing the Joy-Con steering wheel for arcade racing games, but an actual steering controller is better. Currently Hamster is collaborating with HORI to make their arcade stick capable to play the Arcade Archive series. Also, they are discussing possibility of releasing unique arcade sticks with control panels such as twin levers, track ball, and a loop lever.

Hamster is now trying to release new titles for Arcade Archive every week, and Hamada thinks it would be nice for fans if they can find new titles when they visit the eShop on a weekly basis. But this is just their target and there might be a week they can’t release new title for some reason. The dev team is trying hard to achieve this.

Currently they are only announcing five Neo Geo titles from the Arcade Archives and haven’t announced the (standard) Arcade Archives series. They are currently focusing on keeping the series on track with continuous releases of Neo Geo Arcade Archives. However, they will definitely bring (standard) Arcade Archives in the future.

You can easily stand the display vertically? Is this with the default kickstand, or...?

Seems pretty neat though, sounds like that's a perfect use of detachable controls.

I had no idea these games were coming to the Switch on launch, that's rad. Hopefully they can keep up the games per week like they mentioned. Also, I wonder how many games will take advantage of that weird horizontal screen position they mentioned.

Rotate the screen to play vertical arcade games. Interesting. The goat schmup machine confirmed?

I know it sounds stupid but I actually like those games.

I can imagine the switch getting arcade units you place the tablet into, similar to what the ipad had with the retrocade things.

All of this sounds amazing, but as of right now is all Japanese exclusive...

I hope they bring it stateside as I would definitely like to buy some games, specifically Waku Waku 7 and Metal Slug 3!

There are a great handful of NeoGeo titles that I hope make it to the Switch as I believe the console-portable hybrid idea sits well with arcade titles like these.

Wait, can you actually position the switch in tablet mode vertically? Because I always thought that'd be perfect for DS/3DS games if they ever came to VC.

It's not stupid to like shoot 'em ups at all!

You'd have to lean it on something. The kickstand only flips out one way.

I don't know how sturdy this would be, but couldn't you maybe just take off one of the JoyCons and hold the system (with one JoyCon attached) vertical like a controller with a big screen on top?

EDIT: something like this

Might be way too top-heavy, but I haven't held the thing so I don't know.

I don't think there's enough to hold on to while playing like that. I would drop it.

That's why I said I don't know if it would be too top-heavy. I would imagine my middle and index fingers curled around the back of the screen, not-unlike using a phone in portrait mode.

Hamada also claimed that on Switch, it is easy to distribute downloadable titles globally

Eh, hopefully. Arcade Archives has become a mess on PS4. Some games show up on the US and EU stores in the same week, others might be five or six months apart, some of them skip one region completely.

This exactly. I've bought a couple but I would be happy to start buying them on the Switch when I get one. I was looking forward to Wonderboy but it was never released outside of Japan. I think Rygar was released on US PSN but not on AU where I am. So annoying,

Definitely too top heavy, and using the joycon with the buttons closer to the stick makes it even worse.

Looks like I'm going to be building my Neo Geo collection on the NS. I was originally going to do it on the Wii, but never got around to it since I was in Japan and getting U.S. eShop cards was hard to do. Which meant I had to be selective on what I purchased. Don't have to worry about it this time. I hope they can follow through with their promise of one new game a week, because I want to pick up Mark of the Wolves and The Last Blade. Maybe we'll hear more about their plans on the 28th.

Are they confirmed for the European launch too? Wouldn't mind picking up kof and metal slug on launch...

Hopefully with Windjammers to follow sometime. And stuff like last blade etc.

Whoever is first to come up with a custom joycon for portrait mode with a snes controller will have my money. Or even a mini arcade cabinet dock.

I wonder how they plan to reduce the file size from an average of 600 MB to 200 MB for the Switch versions? You have to wonder if the Switch versions will be gimped in some way to get the file sizes down that low. I have heard that the PS4 versions are already gimped in the sound department, but other than that the arcade games available on it were pretty good ports.

Edit-I like the idea of them collaborating with Hori for Arcade Sticks or perhaps actual Joycon attachments for trackballs/paddles/ or levers if possible. Also I should say pretty good emulation wise not ports.

I would imagine they employ some sort of compression with the NS version where as the PS4 versions use uncompressed sprites. That alone would save a ton of space.

I didn't realize that this is how the Neo Geo games would be coming to the Switch.

Should be great to have another VC-like service of arcade games constantly coming to the Switch. I already have high hopes for VC on this console, even beyond what we got on the Wii. The Switch seems like an incredible platform for retro games.

I'm curious to see if the Switch kickstand supports vertical orientation. A lot of people doubt it but I have yet to see or hear about anyone actually trying it, even in the hardware impressions we've gotten.

Seems at least plausible to me that it was designed with a possible vertical orientation in mind. Look how close it is placed the the bottom edge and how long it is. At least from this image it seems it could support the weight. I have a kickstand built into my phone case that is way flimsier and actually works in a similar way.

Actually I found a phone case with a kickstand that looks even more like the Switch kickstand. Tell me that this (intentional) vertical orientation doesn't look similar to the Switch.

I said portrait mode would be awesome for vertical shooters, glad to see we're getting it sooner rather than normal.

I created a thread some time ago, suggesting that the console would be great for shmups because you can put it vertically.

I hope that we will see some great shmups on Switch !

Good spot with the mobile case, though the length and angle of the stand differs quite a bit so might not work with the Switch standing like that. would be interesting if someone with a Switch actually tried this out and let us know!

No real answer for that, just gotta wait and see.

Well, the Arcade Archives for World Heroes and Neo Turf Masters hit Xbox One the other day. I've bought KOF and Metal Slug rereleases multiple times over the years, and paid for the full SNK Humble Bundle, but I never bought those two and I'm curious how the emulation turned out.

I have a feeling Neo Geo games would find a nice home on the Switch since the Joy-Con are essentially mini Neo Geo CD controllers.

Guess I'm the only one that thought the guys from Top Gear / Grand Tour had gotten into games after reading the title?..

I should really go to bed.

It's cool, coincidentally I feel like I am the only person who thinks Ben Bova first when Grand Tour is mentioned.

It has been a confusing couple of months.
