Microsoft announced Xbox Game Pass subscription service

No EA on list? So if you want this and EA Access I guess two subscription charges would apply?

I do still wonder how many options for different flavours of subscription might end up on the table going forward?

Still multiple options gives customer choice at the end of the day.

With the option to jump in/out month to month, these services threaten to completely change my approach to spending $ on games.

Rarely do I feel a need to "own" a game. So being able use these rental services could decrease my annual spend whilst giving me access to more games than ever.

That's cool. Think I will get both this and EA Access when I get the Scorpio.

And another glaringly obvious reason why competition matters. With a singular monopoly you wouldn't see shit like this.

What do you mean with this?
This is a subscription service that's going to rake in silly amounts of cash on games that have already lost 99% of their revenue-generating potential.
Similar to GWG they will add in one or two loss leaders as in XB1 titles, but those likely will be rather old games that are also on the tail-end on their revenue generation cycle if the promo header is any indication. Halo 5? NBA 2K16? Both are dirt cheap by now.

So while this service can most definitely have a lot of value to the right customer, realize that this is in every way a move to print more money instead of Phil Spencer bending over backwards just to please his fans. It's a damn smart move, too.

Much like movies.

I can see myself subscribing the odd month here and there if there are games I really want to play, that I know I can complete in the given timeframe.

I have an honest question though, why would I pick this service instead of getting a Gamefly subscription?

With Gamefly I would get literally any game I want, new or old that works on the console I want.

Games may take longer to arrive and it is $6 extra dollars per month but still, not having to download tons of data to play a game and the library being much, much bigger than this service would make me join the Gamefly service instead if I ever consider this one in the first place.

Just a thought though, I guess this service in specific would work for people who want to play games they may have missed in the past instead of trying to get newer games because if that was the case, then Gamefly would be a better option I think.

-Gamefly is $6 extra a month
-You have to wait days to get the game your after
-Your still gonna have to download gigabytes worth of updates for most games
-If it works like EA Access, you can "gameshare" your subscribed games to play on two consoles at once.

Just a few off the top of my head.

Good potential value proposition if you don't need to play stuff at launch, sell back your games anyways, and the available titles are good.

With backwards compatibility, play anywhere and now game pass, Microsoft is certainly pulling out all the stops to restructure and enhance the Xbox brand.

Add in the Xbox One Slim and numerous dashboard improvements, and it's fair to say the company is doing all it can.

Unfortunately, for me, it just isn't enough. For all Microsoft's innovations and gamer-centric initiatives - which I welcome and commend the business for implementing - they still have few games I actually want to play.

I'm not trying to be a negative nancy and think once Scorpio is out and it's getting the best multi platform titles (probably), the brand will be in a strong position all things considered.

But they need successful new IP. Despite what some people say, they have tried to create new franchises and it just hasn't worked so I hope they have more luck in the future in that regard - they need it.

Halo can't be the face of Xbox forever, at least not in the way I think Microsoft want it to be.

It's your right to not be interested in the games they are bringing but to say that all they have is halo is factually wrong.

Of course they always release games from their big franchises (and honestly they would be stupid not to), but they always have, are, and all things point to them continually will release tons of games outside of these franchises.

Business 101. Create value for the consumer and still make money.

This has the foundation to be a good service. PSnow worked but had issues. I think this resolves alot of those problems. But the limited selection makes it just a curiosity. Will be nice for subscribing for a month and essentially renting a game for 9.99 whenever one I like shows up.

This actually sounds like a great idea. Especially if you can try games similar to Gamefly and not have to wait for it to come in the mail. It seems like a good selection of games so far. I don't have a Xbox One yet but I will definitely consider it.

On snap, thats actually pretty amazing. Credit to EA for proving the viability of a full blown sub model. Hopefully this puts pressure on Sony offer something that doesn't have to rely on some garbage cloud (which is back to being ps3/4/vita only)

If the catalogue is decent then I wouldn't mind subbing, even it it's only for a few months when I'm looking for something different to play. I used to have gamefly, but all the downtime between sending games back and trying to get certain games became annoying. I like the netflix type subscription idea and always enjoy more options.

Looks like Pachter's DICE speech from a few years ago is starting to come true.

iirc he speaks about subscription based game access across Xbox and Playstation akin to Netflix.

Info regarding Windows 10/PC release: This service is Xbox One only at launch, it is not coming to PC (at least for now). The little info in the faq saying that this service is for Xbox One and PC is incorrect.

Source: Just talked with head of Xbox PR germany.

Edit: FAQ section has been edited, now saying "only on Xbox One" aswell.

You could say the same thing about Netflix Streaming versus Netflix Mail-Order.

But when was the last time you heard anyone talk about getting Netflix DVDs in the mail?

Sounds like it'll mostly be 360 titles... not that I haven't already played all the Xbox One titles I want to at this point anyways tbh. Not gonna be very appealing to me I'm afraid, MS... especially not at that price.

I'll pass.

If this had streaming instead of downloading I'd be all over this. The problem with PS Now is that it's all old content for a previous gen console. When I first read the OP I was getting excited thinking HOLY SHIT IT'S PS NOW FOR XBOX BUT WITH MODERN GAMES AND IT'S CHEAPER. Then reading you have to download the games was a punch to the gut.

Still a great service mind, and I could see myself diving in to it every now and then. But yeah no instant access to everything straight away without having to wait for a download keeps it from truly being the super convenient Netflix of games that I want. Like, I'm not going to impulse play much of anything on this when I have to wait for a download.

Freedom to buy what you want, is the "Steam thing." Instead you're now in a locked service that will feed you content that you HOPE you want. That's the point.

But you don't have to be part of it, and you can still buy or not buy whatever you do or don't want...

It's exactly the same as a Netflix subscription that way.

There's no pleasing some people.

My thinking is that if the Xbox division shows that it can bring in a steady stream of revenue then they might be granted a bit more leeway into bringing in more studios and getting more IPs going.

Having more options is always a good thing.

However, I do feel that this medium is heading towards a future where everything is 'rented' and nothing is owned. Games as a service... I don't know how I feel about that, ultimately.

Good post. This is where i am at. I have little interest in the majority of their exclusive games so i find it very hard to pick up the system even when i see crazy deals or stuff like this.

If you download a game while it's in the service, then later it rotates out of the service, do you still have access to the game after it rotates out as long as you still subscribe?

So this is Windows as well? Which brings me to my next question of will 360/Xbox One games we already own he playable on PC regardless of a subscription?

Also how will this affect Live Gold? Are they going to cut back on free games?

Every month new games will cycle into the subscription with some cycling out, giving you a constantly-updating library of games. Xbox Game Pass is your ticket to endless play
so,every month we will have new games added and the previous month will be removed?

I think you should re-read my post mate. I didn't say all they've got is Halo, merely that the franchise could not be the face of the brand forever.

I also acknowledged that they have tried to bring new experiences to the platform in the form of games like Sunset Overdrive and Quantum Break.

But none have performed particularly well. They need new IP to supplement their existing brands or replace them, in my opinion of course. :)
