Hamster talks Switch, Arcade Archives, tate mode, arcade stick support, Neo Geo

I'd love to see some STG's on the Switch. Seems a perfect fit.
Hopefully, Hamster applies the same level of craft that M2 did with their Sega 3D Classics.
Take it with a grain of salt, but Shane Bettenhausen told me that M2 is behind the hamster releases, when I tweeted about Gradius. I bought some releases and they are fine.

Tate switch, god that would be so great. And I think a joycon would work very well.

I used to play DoDonPachi on PSP tate, it was awkward but worked.

Slim it down a bit, may be?

I'm reasonably sure this isn't true but Hamster (and Nippon Ichi, the studio that produces the releases) does work with some of the same external contractors that occasionally work with M2.

Yeah, I suppose anything is possible but that reads odd to me too. Unless M2 is trying to make a brand of more "budget" oriented porting/emulation projects? They are already doing port work on PS4 as proper-ass M2, so not sure what this would accomplish.

To be clear, I only use "budget" because I can't think of a better way to put it. I like and respect Hamster's work and hope to see more of it, but M2 are on their own level.

Is "tate" mode pronounced "tayt"? Or is it with Japanese vowels? Is it more like "ta-tay"?

Welcome to the much, much more minor than gif/jif debate. The proper pronunciation is tah-teh, being a Japanese word. The problem is a large portion of Westerners had no idea that was the case and were raised hearing/saying tayt, considering it is a common surname you can see the mix up. That is my understanding anyway, always welcome to any further insight.

My opinion is say it however makes you happy just realize if you are talking to someone in the Western hemisphere chances are they have never heard tah-teh before. And vice versa. But also chances are the average person today would understand portrait more now anyways.

Language!!

Edit: just had a thought what the origin of the mix up may have been. Purely speculation on my part. Arcade operators receive an instruction manual. I'd have to check some of the early ones but I could see them instructing to turn the CRT sideways, referring to it as tate. Dude in California or wherever has never seen or heard that term before. Refers to it as tayt. It is passed along to people in the arcade, propagation meme style. There you go. At least I assume a lot of those operators had no direct communication (as in vocal, considering language barrier) from people at Taito or whoever. They were talking to distributors and the likes.

Just tried out our Switch, and using the built-in stand doesn't work for tate mode. Collapses instantly. I tried holding it vertically with just one Joy-Con in place, and while it wouldn't be impossible to use, it wouldn't be super comfortable and is too heavy to hold that way for too long.

If KOF 98 hit NA for launch I would buy a pro controller at launch (if I could find one, that is)

Seems like a clear ad for that HORI stand.

I never heard "tate" before this thread, but when I read it I figured it was shorthand for rotate. But then the poster you quoted mentioned the Japanese tate, which makes way more sense (and as someone who knows basic Japanese, sounds less annoying then "tayt").

Yeah, and it's bull, unless other platforms are also getting it as part of the ACA. If they are, though, that seems to signal a drastic change in Hamster's plans for the NeoGeo releases.

Maybe they are dialing down on PS4 and XBO releases since they confirmed IIRC they intend to release AA games every week on Switch, can they do that on three/four (including PC) systems at once?

TATE mode? Special twin stick arcade sticks possible?

Holy shit yes! VIRTUAL ON HERE I COME.

They say they want to do it but they don't make the sticks and who knows if Hori cares enough to do it.

Even then, they're thinking more in the direction of Libble Rabble and Crazy Climber, not more modern games like Virtual On.

If they don't launch in NA tomorrow I'm just picking up the EU versions.

Apparently it's super simple to buy from different region E-shops this time around, thank god!

I have this stand from Amazon which is great. Its completely adjustable and collapses down to a very travel friendly size. I'll definitely be trying it with the Switch this weekend.

Awesome! Keep us posted on the results with pics if possible. If it works out well for you I may get this. I already have ordered a Hori Switch stand and I will need to test out Tate mode results with that to see how well it works if at all.

Bought KoF 98 - never really played one, but I wanted a fighter for the system.

I'm really liking the Pro Controller, so I might buy a second one and since SF2 might disappoint, it's nice to have a fallback and some new systems to learn.
It's really nice to see that many options to configure everything to your liking!

Edit: Hoping Samurai Showdown isn't far away, always wanted to try that one too!
