Sliding the Switch in and out of the dock will inevitably scratch the screen

Inspired by some of you, here is my ghetto mod.

Hahah awesome!

Though you can slide the small bag right over and its a snug tight fit, doesnt make it harder to slide in or anything.

Also I'm happy to report after some playing, heat isn't an issue.

So rejoice ghetto packaging bag users!! Seems fine, normal kind of heat for the system/mobile device.

I think the dock it self makes it carry more heat as it has no extra cooling (which kind of boggles me, why not a fan nintendo?)

This is pretty disappointing. However I am using the console basically exclusively as a handheld so it won't really be an issue for me.

what if we all start scratching our screens......because all of the panic this thread has caused, has us putting stuff inside our docks that wasn't intended....creating less space and more unintended resistance.

I mean, it makes sense that softer materials than the plastic in the dock will be less likely to scratch the plastic screen. Then again if other particles get stuck in there whilst it's being docked/undocked then I can see that causing more scratches too.

Ah, okay. Finally saw the image. I'll compare mine with my sister's and see if our are the same or different. We want the one on the top in the image, right?
That's the thing, we don't know and can't be sure from a photo, through our monitors. There's so many variables involved that it's just not an accurate means of testing.

I'd advise you instead that you look at your display and judge if you like it or not. If you like it, don't sweat it. If you don't, then yeah try to find out more to it and potentially complain to Nintendo.

Is it normal that some screens come with a yellow tint to it? really?

The only other device I had this problem with was the 3DS.
Many IPads, iPhones, and IMacs have the yellow screen issue, and have for years. Big threads on MacRumors about it. It usually is most noticeable while looking at a light grey background. One side of the screen will appear more "yellow" than the other side.

So, the screen lottery is with almost any small IPS display. It does suck when you notice it, but honestly you wouldn't notice it during regular play.

I bought two Switches-one Grey and one Neon. The Neon had a yellow tint on the left side of the screen. Very subtle, but there nonetheless. I should've taken a pic, but I didn't. The Grey had a uniform white screen. I sent the Neon back and kept the Grey. Not an exciting story, but that was my experience.

Wont thw qhite foam from the box scratch it too?

Well things usually on scratch other things if they are harder or have some kind of mechanical (RPM), heat/chemical advantage. So unless it is the dirt cheapest plastic you should be ok.

And my solution to this problem.

I used microfibre for back of Switch too. If screen can be scratch then back cover too.
I thing it would be sufficient for now.

I think a lot of people are doing it as a temporary fix until they get their screen protectors. Once you get the glass ones the plastic isn't really gonna be able to do much to it.

Wait 3DS?
My N3DS doesn't look scratchy yet but I should get one then.

Yep, both my OG 3DS and N3DS XL have scratches because of faults in the clamshell design. Luckily for me, both of them have screen protectors so the screen isn't damaged, just the protector.

Mine doesn't look scratched yet. Is there a recommended screen protector I should get, or just any tempered glass one?

I went the easy way, just cut the white foam from the box and just applied it on the screen while I slided the Switch in the dock.

No need for tape, I'll just stop using it once I get my tempered glass.

Feels like OG 3DS days.

I've used a bit of insulating tape on the edge of dock where Switch touch when you insert in and seems to works very well. It's also black, so is really difficult to see.

Is it a pretty tight fit? I feel like my ridge is extremely close to the screen, I did what you have done for now until my screen protector comes in like two weeks.

It felt a bit tighter, of course, but it seems alright so far.

It's tighter on the bezel anyway, so I don't think this could damage the touchscreen.

So I docked my Switch ONCE and I already managed to get some scratches (I had the foam on it that came with the box). It's all on the bezel though.

I did try to pull the Joy-Cons while the Switch was docked, which may have something to do with it. This sucks nevertheless, I probably won't return it but it's not a nice way to start off a new console.

Well, it seems there are no screen protectors for this thing left on amazon, there are some but with no reviews, I'm not risking it.

Any recommendations?

A five years old kid could have predicted the problem just by looking at the design during ten seconds. But not Nintendo engineers. It's completely inexcusable.

I cut some of the dock packaging and taped it to the inside of the dock to prevent scratches. It seems to work. Sucks that we are doing Nintendo's work for them.

Coming across this thread i got a picture in my head of a dock that doesnt cover the screen, so im thinking of cutting the front half of the dock when i eventually pick up my switch. The mental image of this looks pretty cool.

Are you serious? It's like a bunch of plastic and some USB/hdmi hookups lol

It includes the $30 powerbrick, HDMI cable, and the internals are those of a USB-C hub with HDMI, 3 USB-A ports (supposedly one can be USB 3.0) and USB-C power passthrough, more or less like this one.

Yeah stuff is a bit expensive still but of course they are also banking on the fact they have locked the HDMI out with proprietary tech, so they have the monopoly.

Haha. I thought similar thoughts once I started reading this thread. But I lack the necessary tools, so I doubt I'll even attempt it.

I have a plastic screen protector to put on, the one comes with the official case. Can I later remove it and upgrade to a glass one?

I'm actually on my way out now to buy some Velcro strips so I can use the soft sides to line those plastic guides. I still don't understand how something like this happens though, it's the primary function of the console so how does engineering miss something so basic?

Won't they eventually cause small scratches? Even the soft side of velcro.

Put on tempered glass, but the switch doesn't seem to fit all too well in the dock anymore. Anybody else has the same problem? I used the Big Ben 9H tempered glass.

My ORZLY screen protector was dispatched about a week ago and still isn't here. Anyone else in the same boat? I feel like they've marked it as dispatched but not actually posted it out. The estimate is 14-17th

It got scratched through the foam?

Maybe the foam scratched it? As creative as some of these solutions are, I don't know if making the fit even tighter is the way to go with this. I've had luck so far with just carefully sliding it in while trying to press against the back of the dock. I don't see myself getting a screen protector or doing anything special with the dock, so hopefully that's enough.

Yeah, I was thinking this might start to be an issue. My Switch is already a tight enough fight with nothing on it, so I feel like the people who are putting stuff on the screen or between the screen and the dock are going to end up making it worse in the long run. Really unfortunate that Nintendo designed it this way, but I'm hopeful that being careful with it will be enough to save it for most people.

The "proprietary tech" is apparently DisplayPort. Someone will probably figure out how to make a 3rd party dock soon.

Is your dock completely straight? How thick is the tempered glass? I tried to find a spec sheet here but couldn't.

Thanks for this, I just put on the screen protector that came with the official case. I left it in the box because I usually don't rock screen protectors. I can say that the screen protector that comes with the case is a nice quality and very easy to apply clean. I literally can't tell it is on there, worth it to protect it.
