Games where the final boss is actually the most difficult required boss

Oh god Jasper Jr is the reason I'm never replaying NMH2. It was so damn hard, it took me like two hours and a headache to finally beat him.

Sonic 2's is one of the reasons I don't like the game all that much as well. That's not even fun to fight, just frustrating.

Spent about 200 lives only on this fucker (from a total of 1000 for the whole game!)

And damn, this series is something else. I remember thinking nothing in the sequel could top this boss and then Prinny 2's ended up being probably the hardest boss I've ever beaten in a game.

Metal Gear Rising is like a check of every mechanic in the game. It's great sort of "have you been paying attention?". The final boss in base Bloodborne wasn't hard but OoK from The Old Hunters was amazing. "You've played this game for a long time, are you good at it yet?". Loved it

Cleric Beast is one of the first bosses you can fight, not final. Not sure what it was mentioned. And if we're talking about the hardest Bloodborne boss, then that son of a bitch
Martyr Logarius
from the main game personally gave me the hardest time and from the DLC I'm currently getting demolished by
Orphan of Kos
. Though, I am on NG++ for my first DLC playthrough.

Wow I'm a fucking moron because I swore the thread said first boss. But yeah the hardest boss for me was that fucker
Ebrietas
or however you spell her name. God I took me a week to kill her.

Drakengard 3 and Ys 1 are two particular cases that I'll forever remember.
Mostly because those final bosses are fucking insane.

This bitch (Nyx Avatar from Persona 3).

The first time I fought her (him?), it took me almost 2 hours to get through 12 of her minor forms and whittled her final form's health down to less than 1500. I was so. fucking. close. Then this motherfucker uses NightQueen and fucks my shit up sideways. I then call it a night (at 3:30am) as I had an exam the next day. She's a hard boss, but an excellently designed one that tests the player's endurance and overall mastery and understanding of arcanas.

Nyx for me was really easy. I only finished the main story of P3 once and when I fought Nyx I killed her 12 forms in one attack (or it was one attack per form, I don't remember) and just the last one that gave me some problems but nothing close to defeat my party.

I'm damn proud I defeated this prick twice. I replayed Prinny last year and it's a experience that gives a new meaning to the old strategy of: mash that damn square button as fast as you can.

Maybe I was just bad at the game but I feel like one of the latter Croco fights, the Pirate Captain, and the boss of Mallow's palace were more trouble than Smithy (assuming you cheated and put Geno or Bowser against that giant crow instead of Mallow).
The Jonathan Jones fight is only hard if you duel him with Mario, if you ignore his men he's easy. The second Croco fight is bullshit though, I totally forgot about it. I never had any trouble against Valantina though, Mallow is never in my party.

Didn't see Vagrant Story mentioned. Full of hard bosses amidst obtuse gameplay mechanics. If you hadn't gotten the game mechanics down pat by the end, this fucker ate you alive...

Mega Man X for PC/SNES if you didn't know any tricks/secrets. One charged blast shot only affected one bar of a very long boss gauge. One hit almost completely wipes out your life bar.

PSP version remake was so tame.

Sonic 2 Death Egg Robo

Not only does he require 12 hits compared to the 8 for other bosses but you have to fight him with no rings and if you get hit you loose a life and have to restart the level from the beginning.

However he is even harder in "Knuckles in Sonic 2" as this is due to Knuckle's jump height being too low to hit it normally, so the player must do it as he lands, because as it crouches, it is low enough for Knuckles to jump and hit him.
You can also kick him in the rear at a specific point.

But yeah, it's very difficult.

I still have yet to beat Sonic 2 as a result of this motherfucker. One of the hardest bosses I have ever faced, and I've played through all of the NES Castlevanias.

I've played none of NES Castlevanias, but wow. That difficult with Sonic?

It's been a long time since I played, but I remember breezing through .hack//Infection all the way up until the final boss.

SMT IV:Apocalypse has the hardest Final Boss I've ever dealt with in a JRPG (apocalypse difficulty). He's also the hardest boss in the game excluding DLC.

I'm going to go way out there and mention Oda Nobunaga in Inindo: Way of the Ninja. Not only did he typically bring along a friend like Mori Ranmaru to aid him, he could nullify your hero's Super spell which would normally double attack and defense. If you were underlevelled at all, you would be happy doing 10-15 damage a pop and would have to cheese him by using Sleep Bombs (100% sleep effect, even on bosses) over and over and pray for some critical hits. I also seem to think he could revive whatever ally he brought with him. None of the other bosses in the game came close to his difficulty. Azuchi was also a huge pain in the ass to get through to fight him.

The Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker final boss was ridiculous.

I remember being so happy when I thought I finally beat it only to realize that there was still a 3rd phase to the battle. After 80+ hours, I wasn't going to quit but my frustration was around an all-time high.

Martyr was easy for me. I just used my fire or lightning paper, can't remember which, on him. Took me 2 or 3 times but he was relatively easy.

I also came to post Armstrong from Metal Gear Rising. Such a great final boss that tests everything the player has learned.

Lucifer from SMT: Nocturne on the true ending path.

Without a particular skill, the fight is bordering impossible.

I am really scratching my head at people mentioning Metal Gear Solid Rising. From my experience, most people have a harder time with Monsoon and Sam.
Armstrong starts with some scripted segments that you are supposed to nearly fail to progress the story. He also drops a lot of healing items and (if I am remembering correctly) his QTEs are always the same.

Gwyn in Dark Souls is incredibly difficult provided that you don't parry him. He moves quickly, acts aggressively, and hits very hard ( with what seems like nearly half you health per swing). He's easily the toughest boss in the base game, provided that you don't parry him. It's a shame soul of cinder in DS3 was nowhere near as difficult.

meh, I don't parry and I found him to be a joke. Every final boss in Souls is a joke, Nashandra being the biggest joke.

This dude I found to be the only hard boss in MGR, just couldn't beat him no matter what. Eventually stopped trying and moved on to another game.

This happens a lot on jrpgs for me where I'm enjoying my time with the game having a challenge and the final boss is such a pain I would rather look up the ending on youtube

i used cheats to beat him ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You don't deserve your user name. You have failed the Prinnies.

I spent more lives on that bastard than I did on the rest of the game's stages combined.

Don't get me started on the DLC... I still shiver at the memory of Baal's Castle.

A lot of Mario RPGs have a big difficulty spike right at the final boss:
-Superstar Saga
-Partners in Time
-Paper Mario
-Paper Mario TTYD

I haven't seen anyone mention Geometry Wars 3 yet. None of the bosses are too terribly difficult but it ends with a whopper of one.

I've never beat him. Could never find the hit box as a kid. I'm ashamed.

Gehrman
from Bloodborne was the hardest boss in the game for me first time through, and he can be the final boss depending on ending.

The boss after him in the "true ending" is a complete joke.

Mass Effect 3. Marauder Shields is the hardest boss in the series.

I died so many times to him. For such a simple scripted moment, I had to look up a guide on where to shoot him. Marauder Shields died for our sins.

I seem to recall not having any problems against Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga's final boss. I breezed through it but I think Partners In Time's final boss gave me some trouble. Still it was nothing that was hair pulling frustrating.

I seem to recall Onimusha 2's final boss giving me hell but that's only because I didn't have any recovery items and was at the point of no return so I was screwed. I didn't anticipate getting the final point of the game.
