I'm looking forward to some good Zelda gushing. I hope Roy has changed his mid about playing it because it has a lot in common with the games he likes, with its open world freedom and quirky charm.

Great episode! JJ sounded like he was dying from that migraine at the beginning, but it seems like the Zelda discussion revived him.

Night in the Woods sounds interesting.

Don't really care for Zelda talk because I want to be pure. Still listened, but didn't pay attention.

It's been a while since I listened, but the woman they have on there is ultra-annoying. Swears nonstop, interrupts other people who are speaking, and acts too cool for school.

If you didn't say "woman", I would've thought you were referring to Gaming Jesus.
Love you Mark! :p

I think she's great. Breath of fresh air.

I've been trying to figure out what puts me off about 8-4's podcast for a while now, I think this is it. Some episodes more than others, but that's the gist of it.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Sara is cool...can she be annoying ? Sure - but thats the case for pretty much every person. Her persona is refreshing and she brings up different points compared to the rest of the cast in most discussions.

Still hope that Hiroko comes back for at least one episode this year.

They arent reviewing games or critics...if they are excited/hyped about a new games they wont hide - this has been the case since Day 1. Dont know why it would be different with Zelda.

Marks "grain of salt" comment is there for a reason...they know pretty much everyone in the industry and like some series more than others - just like every other gamer.

Last episode.

I'm desperate for more than just ten minutes.

I hope after all the dust is settled and a bulk of players have reached the ending, that they get to do a followup and talk about what went into it.

The writing and specifically the localization changed my way of thinking what game writing is capable of. Seeing ideas that have been poked at by auteur indie games, suddenly blown up into a 40 hour rpg and consistent the entire way through is mind-boggling.

There are a ton of localization specific moments that I feel almost warrant a GDC talk. At the very least, I hope if not on their podcast specifically, that at least some other podcast can have them on as guests to really break down the pipeline of their input during development.

Funny thing is I think that "woman" and Marc are the best parts of the show/ad. Also, show a little more respect, and not refer to individuals in such a way.

Opinions!

Sorry that I didn't catch her name, as I am not a regular listener that podcast starts out with silly nicknaming and backstories that I have no patience for. I wasn't trying to be demeaning... There's only one woman on the podcast, so it's a useful identifier. I skipped right to the Zelda stuff.

But yeah, loud swearing and interrupting of others is bad podcasting form to me regardless of one's gender. I was glad when she checked herself out so the "guys" could talk about Zelda.

Anyone else notice Mark stopped using "rape" on podcasts fairly recently? In the early Destiny days I recall him still using it like he was on a 1up podcast in 2007 (Dude, that boss raped us so hard!) but maybe on one of his trips back to the States he realized no one talks like that on gaming podcasts anymore.

I know, I don't really go to 8-4 for critique and I'm not sure I have any suggestions, my internal salesman detector just goes off every once and a while I guess. I do wish they leveraged their unique position more on the podcast (besides just the day-to-day Japan stuff, which I love) but I understand there is a really long list of stuff they just can't talk about, and dorky technical/translation stuff only a limited number of people and myself would be interested in.

And Sarah's great, glad she's back.

I don't think it's "quality" per se, but Mark used to run a very tight ship it seemed. I remember once he did an episode in America, and he couldn't run a right ship, and the different was amazing. JJ led ones are a lot more casual, and maybe even Mark led ones due to whatever change that's happened.

For example I loved the "Let's Listen" (I don't want to have to watch a screen, commentary is a lost skill), and I don't think Mark would've been cool with that.

I like Sarah. I feel she seems to call Mark and John on shit that others don't seem to do so, for better or worse. That perhaps is half a breath of fresh air, and half "hey, wait, what?"

Either way, I don't think my bimonthly drunk trainride home to Chiba will not be accompanied by 8-4 any time soon.

She is basically identical to Mark in all of those things. I find them both aggravating sometimes but be fair.

Yeah, it's weird—when she was an intern I really liked her on the show, but since coming on board she's taken on the persona you describe above. It can be grating.

Is Hiroko ever going to return to the podcast on a regular basis?

Was Hiroko ever really a major part of the podcast to begin with? I haven't been listening from the very beginning but IIRC she didn't really contribute a lot even when she was there, and by that I mean she'd introduce herself and maybe talk about her week and then sit in silence for the rest of the session, assuming she even stuck around for the whole thing. I like her and it'd be cool to hear from her on a more regular basis but if she can't find the time or simply isn't interested then it's not a huge loss.

That's because Mark would never let her talk, listen to the ones without Mark for quality Hiroko.

;)

And Sarah's great, love what she and Graham have brought to the podcast as of late.

Funny that they rejoiced over getting to talk about playing games after giving as few details as possible about having played them.

To have a podcast with some of the industry's biggest Zelda fans on it limit their conversation to "and that place... yeah, the one west of the thing..." for the sake of avoiding experiences that might even remotely be considered a spoiler is a waste of all involved's time.

Here's hoping they share more personal gameplay experiences next episode.

That's always been 8-4's MO, no?

Or you know... Adults can also be fanboys. Heck I know I have a few fanboy tendencies especially when it comes to SaGa, DQ and Drag-on Dragoon... Which makes me a Squeenix fanboy. Damn.

I think she's great. Breath of fresh air.

She is but I have a hard time with her humour and I very much dislike her liking the Nazi joke but that seems to be the par with the younger crowd these days. Liking some really tasteless jokes.
Can I blame pewdiepie?
I will.

Hah I remember they actually having to explain that Hiroko only relaxed when Mark was around and just sat back to enjoy the ride.

Also Roy is a cute Princess <3 Becomes even more fun when Sarah at chic-pixel plus talks about him.

The "Nice" after the joke. Don't crucify me now but it was either John or JJ that mentioned the joke, insert stupid I can't separate them joke. I think it was in 2/17/17 episode, Samurai souls. Heck it isn't the first time we heard this. "It's OK I'm Jewish" so I never brought it up. Probably shouldn't now as no one seem to care and you know I don't really know how they operate as a unit and these podcasts tend to be personal.

Edit: Not Samurai Souls, went through it. Twice speed were and way to busy from now on until tonight.

Wish you guys did video content, like the thing at the end of the last show, being stupid with the switch unboxing or any like bi-weekly or monthly video segment thing.

Sarah's a fantastic & energising improvement to the show :thumbsUp

Heheh. They do wear their heart and loyalties on their sleeve:
"You can't call yourself a gamer and be on the fence about a Nintendo system."

FeelsBadMan not a gamer
I've occasionally struggled with that aspect of the show (especially because I think they can be great critics / have critical voices when they really try), but currently in a passed it phase.

Yes, I really hoped they'd do more on it.
I think I say this every time though, when a new game with their fingers in it comes out.
Tis unfortunate, but oh well, maybe it's not easy or even something they feel the desire to do.

Same thing happened to me. Was really excited to have her back(listening to podcasts with no female members causes me to get bored pretty quickly) but she's started to bother me with how obnoxious she can be with interrupting and shit-talking things. Mark is pretty much the same way though.

That said, I like her in general. I think I'd like her more if she just chilled out. As a pessimist shit-talker myself I know how it goes.

Love the show, Sarah is great. Brings discussion and perspective nobody else does. Did cringe hard at the notion that you cant be a true gamer if you're on the fence about the switch. Wii U was the worst console I've ever bought so sorry if I'm still on the fence.

Also 8-4 plays will never happen, shame cause i enjoyed the segment on the last ep

Yes and we should let Sarah, the other, dress Roy for it.

Actually noticed that. Many podcasts become better with a knowledgeable woman amongst them. Don't know if it's just because the same old boring dynamic is broken from what I'm used to or I have just been lucky with my podcast choices and they are great adds.

I don't understand why they're still dragging their feet on the streaming/video thing. How many years have they been talking about doing this?

Probably because the podcast is something they do for fun in their spare time. If they weren't a localization company with projects on the plate, I imagine video stuff might have happened quicker.

OT: podcast continues to deliver, and I'm really looking forward to more Zelda discussion. Also looking forward to E3 hype train and (eventually) Mark's regular Destiny 2 segment.

We have day jobs. :) The podcast is something we do for fun, at our own expense, in our spare time. We'll get around to doing something video-related at some point but we're way too busy at the moment, sorry...

I'm actually surprised that being the ones behind some high profile releases you still find some time to do this routinely. Thanks for that!

No worries, I didn't mean to sound impatient or anything (I'm indifferent to the idea of video content, honestly), it just occurred to me that you guys have been deliberating on this for a while now and I think you'll find that it's not a huge deal once you finally get around to doing it.

It's kinda ironic with Mark being so ahead of the curve on Let's Play culture with the Broken Pixels show on Game Videos back in 2005 or so.

Don't worry about video. I don't want to break the image I have in my head of everyone in the podcast being extremely good looking (except for Mark and John who I saw on the bombcast already).

Episodes without Mark are garbage tbh.

Sarah's great when she's being positive (her impressions on Night in the Woods got me curious about the game) but when she complains or snarks she can be grating. It's weird, I liked her on the show when she was an intern but lately it's hit or miss.

Don't like Graham either.

No problem with John, JJ or Roy. But the episodes need a minimum of Mark and/or John on it to be worth a listen.

Maybe I'm just hung up on how good the show used to be.

Super great episode, gang. Sarah was even borderline tolerable in this one!

I have to say, 8-4 is at it's peak when there is legitimate enthusiasm behind the games they are discussing. I think I often listen to each episode 2 or 3 times through on my miserable commute and this one may top that =).

Also, I hope you all hear "thanks" enough normally, but I have to say, I genuinely appreciate each and every minute of the podcast.
