The plots of all those earlier movies. Akira, Hits and ninja scroll and Eva are fucking trash. Just watch the pretty animation.

Guy's I'm not down playing the animation. It was great! It's everything else. I guess I'm just gonna have to read the manga someday. Oh yea, I stand by the soundtrack opinion. It was bad.

The soundtrack was bad? Someone hold me back.

The soundtrack ... sucks?

You son of a bitch

I love this.

Yeah the soundtrack was amazing.

Two friends, one is insecure.
Friends encounter psychic kid, stolen by anti government people.
Govt recaptures that kid, the insecure friend is taken and has his own psychic powers unlocked.
Insecure kid goes crazy with his power, friend of kid tries to stop him.

Step four: Profit

I guess I was bummed out with the little focus it had on the Akira backstory. The flashback near the end barely had any payoff.

Ninja Scroll! That was the movie I was trying to think of. Yeah. It's another one of those anime movies that everybody recommending back in the day but it's really just cool fights and good animation. As a film itself, it's pretty garbage.

I wouldn't recommend it. The best thing about the manga is also the way it's drawn and you don't like that part.

Ninja Scroll was basically a martial arts flick in anime form. Cool fights.

I feel the same with Princess Mononoke.

I watched it for the first time a few years ago and I didn't really get it either. I thought it was fine and all but certainly not worth all the praise. Another one of those things that I guess just got super hyped up over the years, and probably can't meet the expectations of someone just trying to watch it for the first time now. It does look really fucking good though.

It's not only the animation, though. The atmpsohere, music, action and violence are also top notch. The plot kind of stops making sense at some point but everything else is too crazy and awesome for me to care.

If you're looking for a film with a typical beginning, middle, climax and conclusion, Akira is not it.

What it is, is a visually stunning movie with a decent soundtrack, original story and unique characters. If you don't like the soundtrack or characters, you're welcome to that opinion. Lots of people find them compelling enough.

At the end of the day, it's not a masterpiece in films but it is memorable and worth seeing.

The plot of Akira was a big giant ? when I was a kid. But the visuals are amazing. Amazing feat when you consider when the anime was made.

Princess Mononoke is great on the other hand. Although I did like Spirited Away a bit more.

I love threads like this.

"Hey guys, this 30 year old movie...I just watched it and I dont get the love for it. You know what else? The Beatles, right?"

The manga is gorgeous, heavily influenced by U.S. action cinema and in turn was a significant inspiration to the graphic design of western comics. The story makes a whole lot more sense not being cut down to a vestigal nub, but I still don't think I'd recommend it to someone who didn't like the movie.

P.S. The soundtrack is fantastic, maybe you just dislike stuff that is good?

It was OK. The animation was nice except for the way people were drawn. Hated the way they looked. Some nice action scenes. Soundtrack was bad ( DUN DUN DUN!). Story was meh. Characters were meh. This movie is considered one of the best anime films ever. I honestly don't get the love for it and I don't understand why Hollywood wants to make a live action film. Am I missing something Gaf or is it 2deep4me?

I mean, what else did it need to be? It's a martial arts movie with cool villains and some good fights, as well as great art and animation. Saying it's garbage is straight hyperbole, unless you just have some deep seated hatred of samurai movies.

It's the same with Akira, yeah, the plot is nothing to write home about but the appeal comes from the gorgeous art and animation coupled with the action and violence. Not to mention that, back when it came out, I'd never seen ANYTHING like the finale of that movie, animated or no. It's easy to be jaded and talk about it being derivative but it only feels that way because of how influential it was. It's derivative because anime and sci-fi have integrated so much of it's iconography.

I've wanted to buy the manga volumes for years but they're soooooo expensive. I always end up flipping through them when I'm at a bookstore, though. Gorgeous artwork.

This happens a lot. Some person watches something from 30 years ago, or plays a game on the NES for the first time ever and go "...I don't get it." In most cases you simply won't. It was something that can be appreciated now, but the effect it had on everything was strongest in it's original day.

The fact is the film holds up pretty damn well. Animation is still amazing. The plot is pretty straight forward. Maybe on another viewing you will "get it".

One of my favorite movies ever, and calling the music bad completely invalidates the OPs opinion. The animation is still beautiful today and the music is just incredible.

aw man, i am so sorry for the OP. it must suck to have such shitty taste. i rewatch this every couple years. Akira is a masterpiece, now and forever.

Like most have said, it's hailed as a classic for the superb animation work and visual design in general. The gifs in this thread are proof enough of why that is, it's a 30 year old movie and that animation is better than 90% of anime today, especially if you prefer animation done by hand. The plot isn't great, but that's a problem with many adaptations from manga that cut a ton of the story out.

I had the 6 (?) Volume version that Darkhorse put out maybe 15 years ago. They were great.

I love the two page full panel spreads so much. There's so much detail in some of those, you can spend several minutes just looking at them and taking it all in.

Games I get... New games are designed differently in game and visuals than what we have now

Akira will be beautiful and emotionally resonant forever

Actually, the movie adaptation was seriously so far apart from the source material. It was a milestone in animation, but I myself didn't think it was really that great a movie.

Akira had an insane budget and loads of production time from what I've heard and they literally poured it all in to making the animation fucking insane.

I guarantee you won't see the level of 2D animation akira has again.

Akira is still awesome.

The design work, the animation, the music, the setting. All A+.

The plotting is a little convoluted, and on first watch I didn't really follow everything. But, after a couple more watches it's all straight forward enough. I actually really like the story.

Great production values, cool aesthetic but as a. Movie it's garbage. And I know it was chopped up and condensed from the manga. But that doesn't excuse it from being a mess
